GALNET - 24 NOV 3308 - KINGFISHER MEGASHIP VANISHES

The Federation responded by cancelling the temporary permit restriction to the Hyades Sector YO-Q b5-1 system for all vessels except fleet carriers.
On Playstation, this permit lock is still in effect as of Thursday 16:20. Perhaps they flipped the kill switch for consoles sooner than expected?

Ahem...I would like to place my formal response:

Was top 25% on BH CG because credits are credits. I guess it will be an AX CG for my next job. Just wish the next fight would be a little closer to home. I hate wasting the internal space on a fuel scoop.

I doubt we'll see any kind of a cut scene for anything until update 14 drops. This was the "Use Aldaran to show the audience what the death Star is capable of doing" event to drive fear into our hearts. I guess it worked. Of course there are seven more to go.
It's not really an Alderaan type event, though - it was an unhardened megaship with no escorts. A single Cyclops could take that out without trouble and everyone knows it ... and of course the Thargoid attack on the Kingfisher was itself carried out by the Stargoid's interceptor escort, not the Stargoid itself.

We had the "Thargoids have decent firepower" event when they were taking out Farraguts off-screen back in 2.3.

Given how much the front 3 have slowed to a crawl in the last few weeks - I wonder if they were originally hoping to release U14 a couple of weeks earlier, and have had to add in some filler to pass the time.

We all expected the ship to go kaboom, but some expected this loss to come with a piece of information or some obscure interesting piece of lore.
I was expecting this week's CG(s) to be along the lines of "Cover the Kingfisher's escape" / "Collect escape pods and black boxes from the Kingfisher", and the better the CG(s) did, the more info we'd recover from the attack. Seems a waste of a decent story hook.

It might be hard to do a CG through a general game engine update, and we're also seeing the split into live and legacy on Tuesday. I'd imagine both are good reasons not to run a CG right now.

Why waste time on fools? Should prepare our defenses instead. Another few megaships from Sirius Corp, to bolster the defense lines CG would have been better.
But too late now, will have to go with what we got.

I would have never predicted erratic courses, due to missed rollout date. :)

The delay was due the Panther Clipper requiring more polygons than expected.

Well by "Alderon event" I was implying that they showed they are not coming in peace.

You could be right. I refer to that sort of activity as "wiggle room" similar to the method NASA uses as a built-in countdown hold where they stop the countdown at 9 minutes before launch on all the shuttles, just in case they needed a little extra time for something.

How many stations have burned since HIP 22460? I remember hearing Thargoids invading human space since then haven't been touching stations, making we wonder if they consider civilian stations off limits for attack now. If so, did they consider the Kingfisher a hostile military target?

Yep I don't like ship-based combat but it looks like we're just getting more of that. Odyssey's existence at least has me hopeful we might get on-foot anti-xeno combat at some point, because I do enjoy the FPS gameplay - but having non-combat interactions seems entirely off the table...
I don't think its off the table. The clues point to possible internal sabotage, meaning another mystery to be solved and a more difficult challenge ahead. Even though there will continue to be AX ship combat (because so many players do prefer it), there's plenty of other things to do. I think this is a great setup for update 14 and all the good stuff to come.

Yep, it’s a display of ruthlessness - an attack on a defenseless, peaceful target - it’s meant to send a few chills, incite some anger & potentially galvanise response… [if a bit undermined by the rats leaving the soon-to-sink ship in recent GalNets - then again, this has added some enjoyable political satire] …all part of the build up to Update 14 it seems :]

Well, if nothing else, the Thargoids have now a few thousand human brains repeating over and over again "But I just wanted to be friends!" when they rummage through them.

Wake me up when they've completely destabilized the "Big 3" governmental structures and players are required to make meaningful and lasting decisions about which "side" they choose... no more honorary "King-Admirals" flying around with both Vettes and Cutters, etc.

That'll be the day.
