Galnet Audio: The most useless thing in the whole game?

Just one question - why? Seriously, why? IMO, this text-to-voice engine is the biggest waste of developer time. Do you really think someone would use it?

I already use EDDI's voice plugins on PC. I find system information (I hope Galnet Audio expands in future) more useful than the Galnet news readouts, but these are still entertaining when they come in, and now they will be available to console players too.

I dunno, exploring I'll probably use it a lot. Mining yes. Long supercruise runs..
Depends on what they put into Galnet really. There's a lot of potential in it if player submissions become a thing again.

Just because you don't see the need doesn't mean nobody else does. I know plenty of people who will never use any of the mining improvements, but there are people who do mining in game, same with galnet. I used to read more or less twice or three times a week before player submissions went away.

Hopefully they can also extend it to local system news, that'd be good if you enter and there's a story about the local war or whatever.

Edit: Also I'm sure we could come up with some other bigger wastes of developer time fairly easily. :p

I'll definitely use it. I'll probably still read Gal-Net in text form as well, but it will be nice to be able to listen while doing something else. So, that's probably why. : )

Yep, I will definitely use it.
I think it adds to the experience.
I actually love this addition.

If you don't want to use it, then don't.
There is a lot I don't use either, like multiplayer wings, multiplayer crew, multiplayer squadrons etc.
I don't care for that stuff at all.
I do care for Galnet audio. It will add to my immersion in the ED galaxy.

Seems technically impressive... like a lot of other stuff FDEV manages to pull off.

If it's actually a good use of development time towards the longevity of the game... I don't know. Like others have said, it's the actual news that matter, not the way they're presented. Back when I was playing the game I didn't read much of Galnet simply because there wasn't anything of interest to me.

Just as MadDogMurdock said, content is king here. GalNet Audio is a potent delivery device but it will be what it delivers that will matter. Local news is fine, but its template driven so unless more templates are introduced they'll be repetition which will kill it. One good thing is that if / when player submitted stuff comes in it won't get buried like it did.

I prefer EDDI over galnet audio. It tells me the important news that I need to know already while waiting for the game to load.

So probably never going to use it.

I'm going to use it, it's a fantastic addition. No way in hell would I bother to sit down and read a wall of text in-game, but I'll happily hit the play button and listen while I'm doing something else.

I have been using a plug-in app for voice attack over the last couple years that does the samething. So welldone FDev bit late, but you got here at last. Also now the console player can enjoy what the PC master race gamers have enjoying for years.:D

Defo a fan and do you know how much work it is? Essentially it may just be generic off the shelf text to speech engine.

My hope is one day to use it for the NPC Comms with different tones etc . Mix in all languages as well for flavour.
Did FD state how far back the galnet logs would go
