Galnet Audio: The most useless thing in the whole game?

I like the idea and will use it, but it was pretty funny that it was overplaying some of the commentary I was most interested in during the stream (Sandro talking about god rolls vs new system).

I would have been FAR more interested in a galaxy encyclopedia like HCS has, so I highlight a star, and activate the voice to tell me about that. Or something in a menu, or galaxy map.

I have very little interest in a voiceover reading stories about people I don't care about doing something of very little interest in a system I have never heard of because of [political reasons].

I understand some do, so fine, but to me it's a waste of what seem like very good text to speech tech.

I will use it personally. Being able to listen to what is happening in the galaxy will surely goes a long way to defeating the loneliness of this game. Now if I could get an in-game music player to play my choice of music and see my crew next to me in my ship, that'd be rad.

Just one question - why? Seriously, why? IMO, this text-to-voice engine is the biggest waste of developer time. Do you really think someone would use it?

Seriously?

Its a QOL thing and I have no problem with it. I really don't think it took that much time to develop either. They also added new ship voices to the game which were probably developed at the same time by the same team.

Its all good.

Pick your battles dude! ;)

Something like this called the codex is planned for Q4.

Because they wanted to show of their voice synthesiser voice technology can do.

Plus having Galnet audio reading out the local news could mean users are more likely to discover clues to interesting stuff in the game. For example the clues that were supposed to lead us to finding Jaques Station was hidden in local news at certain stations.

Yeah, third party library. Don't know which though (it is up to FD to reveal).

From what one of the dev comments in one of the streams, it seem they might have develop it in house and it not something they license.

If that the case it a impressive piece of engineering and programming that pushing the cutting of voice synthesization. At least to my ears.

There are plenty of german and russian fan yt videos and streams. I think this new galnet audio feature could partly be an appreciation of those audiences. And I doubt it was that big a drain on dev resources in the overall context of Beyond while delivering effectively on QoL. Perhaps someday it could even be set to report on local faction system news to give an idea of bgs status in audio.

Galnet does not need audio. It needs CONTENT. This is not an engineering problem and does not need an engineering solution.

The thing is the devs might know the content is there but it not reaching users because when they reach stations users are to busy repairing their ship, looking for missions and a bunch of other stuff to spend time reading the local galnet news feeds.

They confirmed it is third party SDK in FX chats. Most likely it is very advanced because what I gathered they have quite a control over it, and they can tweak it and mold it and try to make it work for various things they want to use if in game - including NPC comms. It is long way off though as voice synth struggles with emotions like cries, etc.

If you have voice synth, it is good question why not use it for all it's glory if you just can. That includes reading localized news.

Also if I could get localized GalNet news in my language...I would definitely tune it.

I kinda think the voice synth is wasted on galnet specifically right now? But the potential for actually good uses is amazing. I’m guessing we’re not that that far away from some fun ai voice chatting :)
Eh I might be overhyping that a little. Would be fun though.

Though, if this leads to more news, perhaps localised reporting, I’m all for this.

I'll be using it for certain.

I hope they extend its use to having my CMDR and ship name being spoken out as a welcome to a station, and NPC and player messages read out too.

I like this feature a lot!

You could already read GalNet from anywhere. You didn't need to be in a station. But I guess some people don't know that, because it's nested inside of "galactic powers". In some ways the most significant and revolutionary aspect of GalNet audio is not the audio itself, but the fact that it will have its own icon on the right hand panel.

Still would have been much more excited if they had announced a big new feature for GalNet called "articles".

I think the text to speech sounds very impressive, no question. But if it's just conveying boring stuff, then... yeah why bother?
