TITLE: New Shanghai


DESCRIPTION:
Commanders are slowly importing a new population to Jaques Station, citing a desire to build a society free from slavery. While some of these new residents seem satisfied with their circumstances, a growing contingent of slaves delivered to Jaques have dubbed the station “New Shanghai,” with reference to the ancient practice of “Shanghaiing.”


Lawrence Crandell, a former slave and Lusonda native, had the following to say to local reporters.


“Look, we’re grateful to be free and all, but it's a loose interpretation on ‘freedom.’ We’re 22,000 light years from our loved ones, and if we ever want to see our homes again, we have to work in this forsaken place so we can afford to buy passage home. It's an immoral way to push a colonial agenda. If folks want to build a society free from slavery, here’s some advice: don't build it on the backs of slaves.”

Last night while celebrating the massive influx of materials to Jaques Station in the Eol Prou RS-T d3-94 system, Jaques Station Chief Engineer Addams went on a laughing, drunken rant about the scrambled name of the station and its crew personnel organization.

"Bloody witchspace! *HIC* Fried everything!" he yelled, "Who wants to say the 80 DD-D 77... what was it again? Oh hell. We got the parts from the pilots, I'm fixing this right damn now!" and wandered off with a bottle of whiskey and a modular terminal.

Chief Engineer Addams repaired the stations ID transponder, restoring the stations name. Unfortunately he also renamed the crew personnel group to Jaques Jockeys (despite it being turned down as a name by Jaques himself) and has since been unable to figure out his own alcohol fueled encryption to change it.

Title: Federation Naval Officer Breaks Silence regarding Controversy.

It's been a rough month for the Federation following their efforts to begin establishing a resupply line into the Pleiades Nebula. Critics have been vocal in accusing the Superpower of “Military Expansion in an attempt to exploit exotic resources.”

Post Captain Adhock finally stepped forward to openly address concerns.

“First I'd like to say thanks to the Canonn Institute for their hard work at understanding and unlocking the mysteries of these Xeno Objects. It can't have been easy considering the danger these objects pose. Yes, I am acknowledging these objects as a clear danger. We don't understand enough about how they work and what they do. What we do know however is that they are a destabilizing force wherever they go in large numbers. I am of course talking about the stations that did, and in some cases still are, malfunction due to the large number of the Xeno Objects present."

His office then released statistics that would surprise anyone.

“Regarding station malfunctions, not counting Ramsbottom Hub in Segovan, there have been a grand total of 31 affected stations. At one time, 27 of those were having issues all at the same time.”

“Of those 31 stations. Two were in Alliance controlled systems. Three were Imperial. And a whopping 6 were Federation. That's twice as many as the Empire and three times as many as the Alliance. Of the 20 Independent systems affected, 9 of them are ether Federal Allies, sympathizers, or simply close enough neighbors to concern the Federation.”

The following numbers are a breakdown:

Total: 31
Federal: 6, 19.35%
Empire: 3, 9.68%
Alliance: 2, 6.45%
Independent: 20, 64.51% Total affected. 11, 35.52% hold no ties to any power.
Independents in Federation Space: 9, 45% of Independent Systems. 29% of Total systems affected.

"Overall the Federation makes up 48.35% of the list of malfunctioning systems. That's nearly half the list. Considering these numbers and the applications of Meta-Alloys in combating the effects of the Unknown Artifacts. The Federation's interest in the Pleiades Sector should be fairly obvious.”

When asked about the Segovan incident he replied;
“The Empire still has to answer for that one, regardless of whether they try to justify the horrors that went on there or disavow that heinous act of terrorism. We're still compiling casualty reports but I'm expecting a body count just shy of the millions. The market wasn't the only thing affected by the UA 'Dirty Bombing' that went on there. Goes to show just how shortsighted Imperial supporters can be.”

Regarding the Federation's intentions for it's expansion he had this to say;
“The Federation is committed to the protection of it's citizens. This tactic of 'UA bombing' concerns the Federation. Rightfully it should concern anyone since we can't tell how many of these malfunctions are simply explorers who just happened to head to the most convenient station and all headed to the same one and how many of these are intentional weaponized usage. I can nether confirm nor deny the overall objective of any Federal Navy operation but my personal opinion is if we can establish a pipeline to regulate the flow of Meta-Alloys back to stations still currently suffering issues with UA artifacts, it is our duty to do so.”

Title: Dr. Arcanonn Announces Support for Mahon's Stance

Following Edmund Mahon’s appraisal of Federal and Imperial escalation, Dr. Arcanonn of Canonn has issued a public statement:

“It gives me great hope not only for the current situation but also for the future of mankind that the Alliance has chosen to condemn this military posturing instead of joining in. If only the Empire and Federation were to act as enlightened needless hostilities may be avoided. There is still time, we must put aside our grievances before we pass by peace and are plunged into the calamitous abyss of war.”

Dr. Arcanonn went on to state that the Canonn would support measures to demilitarize the Pleiades and to equally share meta-alloys. Hope for a summit between galactic powers was also mentioned. He finished his speech on a notably candid and direct statement to both President Zachary Hudson and Emperor Duval,

“We are willing to prove we are capable of breaking away from our past and avoiding needless bloodshed, are you?”

Title: A Warm Alliance Welcome

Story:
With the recent change of ownership at Birdseye Port in Alicarl, some weary traders have expressed concerns about the new Alliance station announcer.

"Her sultry tones are just too much," said one married trader who wished to remain anonymous "after lonely weeks away from wives, transporting goods to the far reaches of the galaxy, many struggle to retain their composure when she welcomes us to the station."

Since the very popular buy-out of Birdseye by the Wolf 406 Transport & Co, incidents of traders requesting, cancelling, and immediately re-requesting docking permission are soaring. A spokesperson for the company declined to comment but we did manage to get a quote from a young lady hanging around the dockng bays:

"The girls love the new announcer. Business has boomed recently and we play recordings of her announcements on loop in the background. They've even changed the station's external lighting to red!"

The political organization known as the 'Children of Liberty', long silent on galactic affairs, has chosen to break its silence to protest remarks made by Alliance Prime Minister Edmund Mahon during a recent ministerial address. In a written statement released to GalNet News, they call certain remarks of his "hypocritical", particularly those concerning supposed societal failings of the Federation and Empire:

"Prime Minister Mahon is quick to denounce the 'pettiness and greed' of the Alliance's rival galactic powers, yet he tolerates those same sins when practiced by many of the Alliance's own member states. He wishes to work together to 'create a truly unified society', yet tolerates political ideologies and social orders within the Alliance's own borders that are fundamentally and irreconcilably opposed to one another! According to one independent study done in late 3301, over 213 million Alliance citizens live under the rule of an explicitly authoritarian government. How can a galactic power that purports to so highly value free association, self-determination and harmony allow any member state to inflict such repressive rule on its citizens? If Mahon truly values the principles the Alliance was founded upon, he should focus on putting his own house in order before casting aspersions on others."

The Children's missive, though critical of Alliance policy in part, does conclude on a note of accord, stating that "despite our political and philosophical disagreements, we believe that Prime Minister Mahon is absolutely right to call for joint protection of the 'barnacles'. The rampant exploitation of these mysterious structures is not only reckless and possibly cruel (given questions about their sentience), but may even be dangerous. Until we have more definitive answers about their origins and purpose, as well as their mysterious link to the many unknown probes and artifacts appearing throughout the galaxy, we should approach the barnacles with respect, contemplation and, most importantly, a healthy dose of caution."

Thanks Ian - I appreciate it :) Uh, one thing, though...


If I may - Do you mind if I ask how you've edited it? I know it was quite long, but I felt pretty much everything in it was necessary to complete the story. If it absolutely has to be edited, may I ask for some input as to where to cut it down? I'm also curious how much you guys need to cut. If it needs extensive cutting for length, I almost think it'd be better to go back to the drawing board and come up with something different, rather than have the current article gutted too extensively and posted in such a state.


Anyways, I apologize for being a pain in the you-know-what about this, but since this story and its sentiments will have our group's name attached to it, I just want to make sure it says everything we need it to say :)

If there's any way you can help accommodate us with this request, I'd really appreciate it!

The image transmitted by the mysterious unknown probes in response to a burst from a ship's discovery scanner is still a mystery.

But, while this image occupies his teams, Dr Arcanonn believes there is also more to discover about the probes themselves. The problem is supply:

"The only way we currently know to obtain unknown probes is to hunt and attack rare Federal Military convoys in the Ross 47, G 99-49, Wolf 294 and Wolf 504 systems."

"The Federal Military knows where they can be found, but have kept it secret, so it is up to us to lift the veil."

"Since unknown artefacts are found in a 135-150LY 'shell' around Merope, we believe the probes are in a similar region - possibly even the same region. We also think they'll be in anomalous signal sources, the same as the artefacts."

"So please, help the pursuit of science and break the Federal monopoly on the locations of these probes."

"It could be the most important thing you ever do."

pps: It's 164 words. Last quoted sentence is 10, so feel free to cut it, but I think Dr Arcanonn's soundbites are worth keeping in if possible - for dramatic effect!
