Target the Titans – Guardian Nanite Torpedoes Released

26 FEB 3310

Pilots’ Federation ALERT

Aegis is preparing concerted attacks against Thargoid Titans using the new weapons now available at rescue megaships.

A successful delivery campaign brought in enough supplies of neofabric insulation, ion distributors and energy grid assemblies to mass-produce the Guardian nanite torpedoes. YZ Ceti Blue Galactic and Co, acting on Aegis’s behalf, is distributing rewards and reimbursing bounty vouchers from Clement Orbital in the YZ Ceti system.

A press conference was held by Aegis leadership, including a statement from Professor Alba Tesreau:

“The Guardian nanite torpedo is our most important invention yet. Once again, we are utilising the advanced sciences of the Thargoids’ ancient adversary. And once again, we are relying on pilots’ skill and determination to face the Titans at close quarters.”

“I am painfully aware that many abducted people are still in captivity aboard the Thargoid motherships. Scan results suggest that the majority have now been rescued, but those remaining may not survive these attacks. We are forced to accept that their sacrifice will result in fewer deaths than if the Titans are allowed to remain operational.”

Anti-xeno strategist Aden Tanner discussed Aegis’s tactical approach:

“These torpedoes must be aimed at the thermal vents on a Titan’s hull. A sufficiently large payload of Guardian nanites should paralyse these vents. The mothership will be forced to discharge the colossal heat it generates by exposing its inner regions to space. That will provide us with sensitive targets for more conventional weaponry to inflict serious – hopefully critical – damage.”

“Aegis has marshalled Allied, Federal and Imperial ships to undertake this mission, but we calculate they will not be enough. Only with the support of independent Commanders can we hope to deliver enough nanites to affect each Titan. This could prove to be the most important victory in humanity’s history… or our most devastating defeat. Now, more than ever, we need you all.”

Surprised to hear that the majority of prisoners have been rescued (even if mostly straight into another prison). Initial GalNets put it at tens of millions missing. I guess that makes the ethical dilemma somewhat easier - I was looking forward to some very "fun" debates but nevermind :)

I suspect that sort of ethical consideration ended in the wars of the early 21st century! If it's the other side it's a valid target so you may as well put military supplies in civilian ships!
High-intensity CZs routinely have bonus objectives of killing journalists, so, yeah. Any consideration about target selection on the Thargoid side is long-gone, humanity's first action after developing weapons was Operation "Shoot everything in the Pleiades" Andronicus, six years ago.

Uh. Putting weapon supplies on a rescue ship. That turns them into valid military targets....
Everything is a valid military target, even if others complain about it. Military might is there to crush, and it doesn't matter what. Ethics & concience have no place in war, of any kind. Apparently.

Watched Mechan's "Titanfall" video. Can't help myself that something has been missed. Something that needs to be done after the core is brought to 0%. As it is, the effect is very unspectacular, for all the effort and coordination required to get there.

I don't think so. It's an attack cycle - disrupt the vents, extract the core, do as much damage as you can, score, reset. It's a bucket filling game.

another thought: It might be possible the attack cycle changes once the Titan's defences are down? Maybe it's a staged process. Anyway, it's unlikely to discover it all within the first 12 hours.

There have also been weapons on the rescue megaship for most of the war. Thargoids didn’t really seem to care about them at all even when they would have become a good target to go and snatch some (a lot of) refugees from.

… and they probably don’t care much for human ethics and rules of war.

Having seen Mechan's Video myself, it did seem to have an effect on the damage modifier value for the Titan itself.

The other thing to consider, is maybe you have to remove all the control systems from a titan's sphere of influence before we get the next stage unlocked (that's a big ask considering the present state of the invasion).

There's obviously at least another part to this puzzle, or the AXI would have gone through all of the Titans, so far.
