ANNOUNCEMENT Game Balancing Pt.3

Here's an idea for Odyssey launch: everyone's all Elite ranks are reset.
New levels for attaining Elite are set:
Exploration 10 billion Cr earnings, also exploration missions contribute to this
Trading 100 billion Cr earnings, also missions & mining contribute to this
Combat as is
Already took me 5 years, I'm not doing it again!

I would like to see an extension for cargo/data missions, where missions can take you beyond the usual 20LY with better rewards. I remember a long time ago grinding missions like that but they suddenly ceased. I think with the team you have now and the numbers you have and have crunched, it would make things a lot more interesting.

Data Courier missions from the bubble to Colonia already exist... 20 missions worth around 76 million last time I did a run (a couple of months back) plus the bounties from the hired killers (which would be silly good now!) and the explo data on the trip... About the minimum I'd make was 150 million..

First impressions... This seems to have nerfed delivery missions to a ridiculous extent, back to where we were many patches ago when it was basically worthless.
The distance based algorithm seems to have taken over completely.. but only any good for places 1m+ ls away.

Also we now have missions for 196 cargo which has never been the case to my recollection. 180 max was the decent amount of cargo.

Greetings Commanders,

Welcome to the third and final set of game balancing changes this side of 2021. In the new year, we'll turn our attention to other aspects of the game that you've raised in your suggestions and feedback. As promised, we're making some further balancing changes to other elements of combat which can be expected alongside a GalNet article later today:

I would like to know if, when, and how intense the exploration changes will be. Like, are you not changing exploration to be more in-like with the rest of the game's play modes at all?

I've been playing ED since GPP, aprox. 3000 hours, and got my Elite rank on Trade and Exploration when it still couldn't be done in matter of days.
I'm glad about that, becoming Elite should take effort imho.
My Combat rank is 15% Deadly so I still need 85% percent to become Elite, in my case that's gonna take a very long time, as it should imho.

I'm pleased with the Elite rank progression nerf, keep it up Fdev!

I must say that this change is very welcome (it surpassed my expectations, which are quite low at this point, granted), but it does not solve 2 fundamental problems with AX payouts:

  • Nonsensical scaling between variants. Ask anyone who soloed a hydra how much harder it is than a Medusa. Hint - its not 50%, its much more.
  • Gibbing. With the new payouts, I except a massive surge in gibbing activity, because it will provide a new source of effortless income for fresh accounts if they have a couple friends that can take them along.

Overall, as always, this is a good step in the right direction, but it must not be the last. FDev needs to continue to balance the game and fix bugs/issues, preferably more frequently than once every 3 years.

I disagree - a Cyclops can be killed in 3 minutes. (no insta-shard-gibbing)
And i've seen movies with Hydra kills in 15 minutes.

I'd say it seems decent enough - Hydra kills takes 5 times more time, pays 7.5 times more.

Fair point though I'd suggest the balancing be done on the basis of a slightly-above-average player after some experience in the activity. I wouldn't think it's the best idea to balance based on the cream-of-the-cream-of-the-cream of the FA-off AX crop who are posting solo speedruns of Hydras on YouTube. They are probably a far smaller percentage of the userbase than the number of explored stars in the galaxy 😉 (though probably a larger proportion of the forums)

Most mere humans will never get anywhere near those numbers, and those that do -- I'm cool with them getting unreasonable rewards for their unreasonable skill. They are wizards as far as I'm concerned.

The "balance" you guys call out really sucks.

made mining a pain, then made cargo missions worthless... even the data delivery missions has a side effect (LoL - It kind of remember me of the eggexploit FIX that up PWA)

Seems like you should engage in harder content to earn more money

Are aware that iirc five people in the entire game did 15 minutes Hydra? Average time is 1 hour.

You are not balancing for those five people who used extremely specialized builds and have no problem doing 10 goid simultaneous fights. You are balancing for the average.

Exactly, we have a bunch of BGS friends and they went from the happiest players to the "I am uninstalling it" in 2 hours.

"Can be" doesn't mean "everyone will be able to". Take a look at the data from our survey of solo kill times.

The most common TTK for variants is as follows:
Cyclops - 15min
Basilisk - 20min
Medusa - 40min
Hydra - 60min

If you take a look at actual speedrun kills, Cyclops can be killed under 90 seconds (not instagib), while Hydra takes at least 15 minutes. These are however absolute world-record times, with only a few players in the world capable of achieving, and they should not be taken as a basis for balance that will affect everyone.

As it stands, Hydra kills are simply not worth it with how much more risky and expensive they are, and people will only ever attempt them for the challenge.
