game breaking chat bug: cant use system, squadron or direct message chat

just an update on my end, the bug seems to have fixed itself for me. all chats are back to normal ( or so it seems for now ). i know that the bug can come and go randomely, so it may return at a future time, but for now it seems to be working.

my theory is that it is most likely a server side problem. almost as if when the servers are under heavy traffic, it starts to disable chat options to random cmdrs to lighten the load, or something along those lines. i say this because the bug was only present at moments when there was interresting events going on in elite. my bug started at the events of sirius corporation system, when we had that double engineered FSD reward, and i noticed many elite players were playing during that time. now it's again the alpha time and i assume many players will be back and checking things out, so the bug may be more present during this time.

in any case, whatever the reason is, i hope devs will do something about it soon. keep reporting it on you're end if you experience it and hopefully it will get noticed.

Yeh that's probably a good theory although something official from FDev would be nice.

I was tempted to raise a support ticket. Mine was initially okay again on login last night and then later it was broken again.

Maybe they could "lighten the load" by not having Open chats visible to Solo players, or system-wide cross mode (and cross-platform??) chats going on.

I havent dared post since i offered that 'try this it worked for me solution' a while back. The game took revenge by hiding all my friends online so I cant wing or MC with them. So its nothing personal the game hates all of us equally

I've done a search on the issue tracker today as it seems to be affecting me everyday usually after 18.00 UTC which may suggest server load as someone pointed out above.

There are many 'confirming' reports on the tracker going back months. Doesn't bode well.

Chat has been ed for as long as i can remember, gotta get used to the bug feature because it certainly does not look like that will ever get fixed.

Interestingly I've been playing on my PS alt account and they have zero problems with system chat. Yet my main still intermittently loses it? I don't understand it.

I've been having a problem in the last couple of months where I'd be typing a sentence and it would just close the chat window on me for no reason. I'd get kicked out of the chat window after a couple of seconds and repeatedly fail to type a short message enough times that I gave up because the message would be too late and no longer relevant.

I'm on this thread because today for the first time in seven years, my chat window completely locked up (the rest of the game was fine and working normally).

I'm now experiencing the crashed chat box multiple times per session, seems to be that the servers can't cope with busy periods during a CG with lots of CMDRs in the system all spamming global chat.

The only solution is to quit to desktop because quitting to menu doesn't do it.

This is clearly something broken from Odyssey changes, and like the rest of the game won't get fixed for months, perhaps even years.

o7 cmdrs and devs,
i've been a happy elite dangerous gamer for years now. never encountered any serious game bugs until this last week or so (27/2/2021) this bug is literally killing my enjoyement and appreciation for the game. im posting this report in hope that this gets more eyes and attention by the devs and hopefully fix it. if you happen to experience this bug too, feel free to contribute.

brief description of the bug:
system + squadron + direct message gets disabled. i cant see or type in neither of those chats. i can send direct messages, but not receive them. the bug sometimes happens mid gameplay at random moments where it would get disabled and stay so for hours. other times it would be disabled from the moment i log in to the game. there seems to be no cause on my end that triggers the bug. i tried to experiment with many possible solutions with no success.

solutions that i tried:

• switching game modes (open, solo, private)
• relauching the game completely, rebooting computer.
• rebooting my router
• reinstalling the game on steam

none of the solutions above have any effect on the bug.

i am a squadron leader, and i invite friends and new players with the promiss that we can help and mentor them to the game. and the fact that i cant respond to them in squadron chat or in direct message is absolutely agonising and game breaking for me. i've been distracting myself by playing other games (NMS) for about a week now, but everytime i log in to check, the bug is still on. at first it started happening randomely, and for short periods of time. now it's just constantly disabled. i haven't seen GREEN TEXT in weeks! i dont think i can enjoy this game without chat functions, as the only thing that makes elite special is it's community.

It's been stuck this way for much of the weekend now, through multiple logins and reboots. I've tried all the different settings (full right icon in chat panel), and nothing fixes this. Maybe I should be thankful, since system chat can be the dregs, but sometimes it is a fun place to hang out...

Please FDev, without system chat this game gets so boring and stale. I have tried /system, fss switching, Swapping game modes, Logging in and out, nothing works.

theres many more instances and versions of it on the issue tracker. please FDEV, do something about it. there's many cmdrs that are plagued by this issue for apparently years now. im okay with system chat not being functional, but not being able to chat in my own squadron or direct messages is just game breaking.

I have just, in the last 3 days, started having this problem!!!
- No access to Squadron msgs or in Settings - NOTHING!... I don't receive them either...
The only new thing was connecting X52 HOTAS...
While trying to find out what was going on i noticed other glitches, like on one of the COMMS channels (i honestly can't remember which now), the text-field, is just BLANK... If i begin to type, the word counter goes down but i see no text as i type...

UGH! Infuriating! Especially when some Squad members who don't care to use it, have it working fine... yet me, i enjoyed using it, CAN'T!

Right now the issue that presents with several players is that people write but no messages reaches you and viceversa.

It must be some settings in the Internet\network ED options, that should be disabled or enabled. However it is quite game breaking and disturbing the immersion.
Using Discord as an alternative is not an answer nor an alternative not only I don't play the game in a window, but I don't like to alt tab infinitely...
Sure discord can be working as a "Pager" tool our commander has on wrist, I really care for immersion you know, but otherwise not ok to use discord removing stuff or accepting things not working in games.
Being the game peer to peer the various side need to be "syncronized".. or it won't work.
