Game feels dead without GalNet

I haven't played in a while, but logging on today was a pretty bad experience. The last update the launcher showed was January. It's now April. The GalNet tab is nearly void of articles and the "Play" button is literally useless. Between that and the 2 year break, the game feels very dead compared how it used to be. There used to be news about the politics and such, but all of that has gone away.

If making up narratives is too much, I think it would be best to repurpose GalNet into a tool that players can use to get the info that they want. As it currently stands, it's junk that's wasting space. But also, the game needs something to make it feel lively again.

I'm thinking that GalNet and Community Goals should make a comeback, but be automated by the BGS. instead galaxy-wide initiatives, there would be smaller, system or faction oriented CG's. GalNet would then allow players to subscribe to the news from different systems and factions. It'd talk about CG's and the various politics as well as things like notable market trends, wanted CMDR sightings, and nearby conflicts.

Just throwing out an idea, but something has to change. The game feels terrible right now.

Can't say I miss it

I do truly agree.

Farewell GalNet, you may be dead but you will never be forgotten.

Cmdrs, please be upstanding for the 83.2 gun salute.

Galnet was okay, but to be honest, it was always pretty inconsequential without any real gameplay significance.
It was fluff, but it made it feel like the game was active. It was a nice layer of detail that helped the game feel alive. Gameplay items aren't the only thing that keep games going. The best games have additional elements to improve the look or feel.

The other problem is that GalNet is currently highlighting the other two neglected pieces of the game: Thargoids and Powerplay. Those are the only reports now and both of those elements have been underdeveloped.

I love how they gave us the ability to listen to Galnet radio, and then killed Galnet.

Sort of a theme, right? CQC, then discontinued. Fleet Carriers developed over two years, then set up to be impossible to operate. Multiplayer perenially scuppered by instancing limitations. Granted, they're re-implementing CQC, so maybe we'll pull out of this nosedive.

I miss it too, as yamiks would say "Imurshun"....... It may have been fluff but I still tuned in on a regular basis. It helped for time progression, new stories would pile up and old ones would go lower down the list until they dissapeared. If I didnt play for a week Galnet was my first stop, I even traveled to some of the systems mentioned until I realized they had no in game tie in.

I think the main part that irked me wasn't so much the irrelevance as it was the disjointed nature of the galnet news plots. You had this constitutional crisis in the Federation, the story lasted four-five galnet articles and then sorta fizzled out and everyone was like "let's never mention this again" and off to some actress disappearing story plot. It's like they were meant to make the galaxy alive, but only underlined how static and eventless the lore actually is.

I'm actually surprised that they didn't open GalNet up to the playerbase to write stories for, with editing/approval by someone on the community or story team at FDev. It would be free content for them, and any aspiring writers here in the community would be able to list writing content for ED on their resume. Win/Win for all

Editing piles of unsolicited articles would be more work than just throwing together some articles themselves, though.
