Game Informer January 2015 "Sci-Fi" issue.

This issue of Game Informer has a cover with No Man's Sky celebrated as the future of Free Roaming, sandbox style space games. Within, they cover a slew of space games, from past, present, to future. There is absolutely no coverage of Elite Dangerous, or any of its preceding games in this list that tops 25 of the best of all time and yet to come. Of course Star Citizen is mentioned among the crowd.

This bothered me quite a bit. I am anxiously awaiting tomorrow's release and hoping that the relative silence about Elite will end when it comes to the most influential gaming publications known to sway potential players.

I am aware that Game Informer is owned by Gamestop, and that their agenda is to push pre-purchasing sales of hardcopy games, particularly for the consoles. However, across the board, I must say that the reticence over Elite Dangerous has been disconcerting to say the least.

I personally hope that Frontier's game blows the roof off of everyone's expectations. At the very least, even if Elite doesn't deliver everything that people want as a space fighting pilot's wet dream, at least it could help usher in more confidence in the genre and we may see alot more games of this ilk in the near future.

See you all in space, Commanders!

It's hard to take much seriously from Game Informer. I read it for info on the games only but don't take any of their editorial content seriously at all.

I know. I keep it near the toilet for light reading. lol

Still, I think it's strange that there is no mention of Elite, other than a passing comment under the Star Wars: X-Wing section.

NMS has MP more like ED than like EVE.

What I found interesting about the NMS article in Game Informer, was the LARGE side-bar by one of the creators of NMS. He went to great lengths to talk about how even though NMS is was a "Multi-Player" game, it would not be MP in the traditional sense. No game wide MP chat. The Galaxy is really big so that even if you can talk to your friends, it is going to take you a really long time to meet up with them, BECAUSE THE GALAXY IS BIG! That players will each start on an unique planet, the other players will probably never see that planet because the galaxy is big. Meeting up with a another "real" person will be a very rare event. That NMS was deliberately designed this way because the devs want you to appreciate the vastness of the Galaxy. (Sounds a lot like the MP design of ED.) I love all the naysayers who claim that ED will get bad reviews because it doesn't have the kind of MP features that they want and are used to in other MP games. I think that there are LOTS of more mature gamers who don't play MMOs, (I am one), because they don't like "take two steps and die" over and over aspects or being unable to survive in the game universe unless you join one of the factions or "gangs" for protection. These more mature gamers are an untapped resource who appreciate MP games like ED and NMS where you can play the way YOU want to! I think the reviewers are going to rave about the presentation and scope of Elite Dangerous and reserve their judgement on the Multiplayer aspects until they see what gamers decide. Tomorrow/today is the beginning of a new era in MP gaming leading off with Elite and No Man's Sky to follow.:)

Hopefully there will be a wipe of ignorance about this game. I've seen too many people in on the conversations on a Twitch stream that haven't even heard of this game. I guess the whole point of this thread is that there should have been more publicity for this game in the first place. It's not just Game Informer, but many of the other popular American based online game publications that have all but ignored this one. PC Gamer covered it pretty well and did it justice, but it's only mentioned in passing by other leading publishers. Hopefully that will all change within the next few days.

I found this discouraging too.

QUICK! Someone write a very angry letter in the hopes of it appearing in the next issue's "Feedback" section.

PCGamer is the best gaming magazine/website, they have covered Elite extensively, about equally with Star Citizen...

lol. I'll get one of my young nephews to write that letter. I'll coach them a little along the way. ; )

Yet they didn't even mention it in their Sci-Fi special issue? lol.

I wouldn't read too much into it. Elite isn't the cultural icon here in 'Murca that it is in the UK. Most of my friends hadn't heard of it, and I only found it by chance. The word will spread.

I know. Just raising the topic that's been bothering me for a few days. Hey, Porkins, You're alive!

For Pete's sake, the whiz-bang launch trailer STILL didn't get the attention of our American brothers and sisters!

WE NEED MORE FLASH!

Get George Lucas to do a special edition of the Elite Dangerous Launch Trailer! He can retrospectively add...

  • A Giant Space Worm coming out of the asteroid being mined, and eating a Lakon Type 9.
  • Three hundred extra Imperial Fighters around the Orbis space station... so thick they blot out the sky.
  • A Death Star blowing up a planet in the background. Better still, TWO Death Stars. Blowing up TWENTY planets.
  • U2 playing "Elevation" live at a giant gig in the habitat ring of the space station.
  • An Alien Queen between the Elite pilots and their ships, so they need to jump into mech suits and fight their way through xenomorphs before they can launch.
  • Vin Diesel beating up lizard monsters. No idea where to put that. Perhaps behind the pilot of one of the Cobras?
  • An Anaconda needs to transform into a giant robot, or a muscle car.

Perhaps that will reach the minimum threshold for getting their attention? :)

Actually I think George Lucas may have indirectly sold some people on Elite via J.J. Abrams' teaser trailer. Who wouldn't want to fly in a ship like they were piloting that Millennium Falcon? Only one way right now, and that's to get a Cobra.

its because right now ED is GARBAGE(read something that rhymes with hit). It announces itself as so much more then it is. It is not a multiplayer game. It is not a well fleshed out single player game with a story. It is a half (booty <-cause censorship) game in between that is horribly dull. Its a rehash of something that was cool 30 years ago. If people blog about this game being awful I wont be surprised and i wont be mad. This game is a shallow mess and like it or not tomorrow you cant hide behind your beta shield. You know I liked Final Fantasy 14 when it was in its original state although it had alot of glaring problems. You know what? The critics ripped it apart for copy paste zones. I cannot think of a more deliberate copy paste fiasco then what is going on in ED. If you seen once rotating box station you seen them all. Who gives a (doodo) after the 50th time?

I havent even played for months since I bought the beta because i can read the forums and see this game is going towards a garbage hole to die. I have no (freaking) clue what this franchise did before this game and frankly I dont care. If peeps want to pay 100$ for mario 2.0 fine but i expected more out of the vision of this game.

Anyone who recommends this game in its current condition has their head up their rear, about the first 10 hrs they played the game. If you are not obsessed with making money JUST to make it then the game is old immediately. The wow factor wears thin my friend at some point there has to be solid content and there just isnt any here and wont be until FD realizes their best hope for content is the community and not some GARBAGE they can put in an algorithm

Grats on your space trucker simulator which by the way is absolutly broken from a market standpoint. Let us know when "the game you wanted" has been implemented so we can tell you how bad it is

Such is the plight of the PC master race. Great games, no, the best games have long been overshadowed by the likes of plumbers and Pokemon.

Hasn't played game for months... knows exactly what state the game is in. You should get a job as a reviewer.

Game Informer is heavily console focused game magazine. They only mentioned Star Citizen, because it was the biggest scam fundraising for a game ever, so they gotta say something. No Man Sky doesn't look too bad, if they can pull it off, it's another alternative. Competition doesn't hurt.
