Game is suddenly very slow and unresponsive

Hi all,

Haven't played Elite for a month, patched today and logged in....the whole game seems extremely sluggish - menu commands taking 2 to 3 seconds to register, pressing escape takes 10 seconds to register, any inputs to the game just seem terribly slow......

Haven't had any changes on my rig and tried all the usual local checks on my own machine - running fine.

PC specs:
AMD FX-9370 (8 cores at 4.40 GHz)
32GB Mem
4GB AMD Radeon R9 290x
Fast SSD, plenty space.
64 Bit Win 8.1.
All drivers up to date.....

Any thoughts?

Any background processes going on? Any huge downloads? Like W10!downloading and patching itself in the background wether you like it or not?

funny you have this issue. For no good reason the framerate dropped from 40 to 8 - inside and outside of the station. Haven't touched the system. Only thing that happened was windows updating (Win7 pro, mainly office updates). I played around with the AMD radeon settings and set everything to manual control, optimized for performance and went back to ED. Turned everything to low. quit, reboot (not sure why but did it) and restarted ED. Framerate was ok again. Increased on parameter after the other to a higher level until I had the framerate as before. back to normal again. And limiting 30 fps prevents my laptop from having screaming fans.

Thanks all for any comments, and it looks like the issue is resolved....

Not sure why, but I turned ALL graphics down to the lowest setting, saved and rebooted. The issue was STILL happening on the lowest settings, so I turned all of the settings back up to the highest/ultra setting, saved and rebooted. Instantly better and problem seems resolved.....Game is back to it's regular super fast speed for me now....

I don't know where the issue was to be honest, maybe there was some setting saved (from the last time I played a month or two back), which was conflicting with my graphics driver (which has been updated since), and re-hashing the game (settings to low, reboot, settings to high, reboot) has cleared this....just don't know what it was - sorry.

Regards,

- Drago

I had a problem similar to this after the last big update (hadn't played in a few weeks due to actual life). I reinstalled and it got going again just fine.

Snap, I had the same problem - was on holidays between June and mid July. When I returned home and first started Elite, there were client side and server side updates installed before I could start the game.

Once in the "pit" I noticed that my TrackIR movement was very slow and not smooth. Then I did a quick test flight to move out of the station and the stuttering was horrible. So I docked again and started checking my game and video card settings.

The first thing I did was update my AMD drivers to 15.7 which was the latest version - tested again and the problem was still there.

Next I started checking the graphics settings for Elite - It was set on Ultra, which was the setting detected when I first installed and setup the game. I then changed the setting to High and the game ran smoothly again, I though Ok, lets try Ultra again and behold all was still running smoothly, at 60 fps.

It sounds like something in the upgrade or perhaps because there were multiple updates, that messed with the graphic settings on the client side.

So now I always reselect my graphics settings after an update is installed.

Glad it was easy to resolve for all.

Yesterday when I read the title I wanted to post a reply about: "Elite is not responsible for slow and unresponsive pilots as a result of alcohol" but I knew that wasn't helpful. Now its answered here is the post :)

Glad to hear its sorted itself, could have been a number of things if it was only on the one boot but a conflict (as you say) is quite probable looking at the symptoms. :)

Yeah - that would be a nice disclaimer :)

So I checked through the updates I missed while I was away - here are the possible culprits:

Server Side Update - 19/6/2015
PowerPlay Update 1.3.06 - 25/6/2015 (most likely culprit!)
Server Side Update - 26/6/2015
Small Server Side Update - 10/7/2015

I considered doing a fresh install of Elite, because I recalled that part of the initial install process included a graphics/system test and applied recommended preset graphics settings. I could not find any way to manually initiate this process to ensure the settings where applied correctly.

In the end I manually set the Quality preset down to High and the back to Ultra to resolve the issue.

I wonder if this could have been the cause of so many posts about terrible frame rates and graphics problems after PowerPlay was released and patched?

I see you still have 8.1. Stay away from Win10 with your AMD vidcard as it's worse and there's a large thread around here about it.

Strange you should mention this. A week or so ago I had exactly this issue. Thought is was odd that I went from a solid 60fps down to 8fps tops. I shut down and restarted my laptop and suddenly it was fine again. *Shrugs* Maybe it was Windows or maybe it was Elite. It's one I doubt we'll ever know 100%.

try this http://systemexplorer.net/

Make save list to file, copy paste IP's what use to much resources from your PC, use CMD tracert + IP's

note: FD like modifying files in RL time, when you start game or when you play game...

There is a thread open for this already, its a problem with the AMD drivers in W10.
