"Game Over"

Far too many people would hate this, word would spread like wildfire, players would bail en masse, and the game would fail and we'd have nothing but NMS, SC or EVE to play.

I would hate this.

I've played games with similar sorts of modes that unlock after you've beaten the game repeatedly - the Dead Space series comes to mind, and I've never actually finished any of these because they're just too much of a pain in the a-ahh.. you know...

Yeah go right ahead ...we'll see how that works out; but then again why not; whats left of the entranced player base will endure just about anything after all that came with Eng --all those wonderful rare to unobtainable items (which still is in effect) , the OP NPCs then in game reward poverty. Game play focus becoming a gawyme of ship building...on and on.

So sure, toss in player wipes on top of that.

I and a few others will be watching sipping our lattes

I'd like it very much. Others won't. And I am sure there is some overlap between people who don't like this and want OpenPvE, and I am sure some of them would have already fired their dramaqueen-engines and threaten to leave this game. Maybe some of those who do like this have suggested making a separate 'hardcore' mode, forgetting they just spend 150+ pages telling everyone why additional modes would 'kill the game'.

Why should I take a game seriously?

Because its fun to others, as escapism and such.

And yeah, I know forums for space games aren't know for having a particular large group of people with a well-developed theory of mind. ;)

Why should I take a game seriously?

Because some people have more fun that way? The "it's just a game" attitude if anything hurts ones enjoyment because there is no consequence (real or perceived) to their actions. Murdering a fleet of unarmed CMDRs outside Everate means nothing, good or bad, because it's "just a game."

Just a game. So sure, abuse every exploit, include every cheat, heck, why not just upload yourself a billion dollars so you can buy that A-rated Corvette you wanted and have some rebuys ready? Earn it? Why? I want it now, and after all, it's just a game.

Contrast that attitude with those who enjoy the struggle and earning their way to where they are. Sure, the downside is they might get a bit TOO upset if they die (because at the end of the day, or really IS just a game) but what they gain in terms of satisfying personal experience far outweighs those who don't take the game seriously at all.

Is a game of baseball or football more fun if you feel there are stakes involved and want to win, or if you just play with a "whatever" attitude?

People take games seriously all the time. Sure you can take them TOO seriously, but that's hardly a reason to not take it seriously at all.

Why should I take a game seriously?

its a valid point. different people play games for very different reasons.... it is good we are all different and that there is a whole bunch of games catering to different tastes.

maybe the problem is that ED is trying to have its feet in too many camps and a "fix" for one is game breaking to another, take @ShimEnki who complains about the overpowered NPCs and compare with others who complain that the npcs are far to weak....

how can FD cater to both of these and STILL build 1 galaxy sim to encompass all, without arbitrarily locking off parts of space as "easy" "medium" and "hard"?. its a tough ask....

just like players who are happy to play shooting ships game, and do not care whether the ships get blown up 10 times in an evening, are playing in the same sandpit as those who really like to think of their ship and crew as something to look after, and hate the notion of insurance claims.

neither is right, neither is wrong, but honestly at this point i think both are incompatible.... its a bit like trying to play Rugby and Football on the same pitch at the same time.

for me more modes is the obvious answer, but then i have no problem with different modes affecting the BGS and as i mainly play with friends or on my own, needing a large population in my mode is not an issue.

others - quite legitimately - feel the game feels more alive with more players so is reticent to have the player base split so much, and some (not so legitimately imo) do not want players in another mode affecting the BGS around them.

as i said, tough to please all.

As for the OP, I'd love to see the stakes raised in some fashion, though I might suggest a tweak to a never ending increase in insurance. I'd say include a cool down period, so that over time the insurance slowly drops the longer you go without losing another ship. But make it slow, like weeks to go back to zero (and longer the more times you blow up).

also this should be mitigated in CZs to encourage PVP situations. If you die in a CZ, you insurance is capped at the base 5% as before.

On the other hand, Frontier would have that much more of a reason to crack down on combat logging. Plus solo mode would still be a thing for people who weren't into the chance of PVP for whatever reason, or just like Alt+F10 screenshots. If people are combat logging in PVE... Well, they have my condolences.

Combat logging is a symptom of griefing. Fix griefing and combat logging goes away. Since we cant travel back in the past and retroactively fix griefing mechanics, then combat logging will probably take a long time to get rid of. Even if they made the game more believable less like the Coyote and Road Runner levels of silliness and violence.

Notice I said Griefing and not Piracy/bountyhunting. There is a huge difference.

How does me not taking the game more seriously hurt your enjoyment?
I don't think it does. Maybe it spoils your forums experience and I am sorry for that, but I don't think I can influence how you enjoy the game.
The reason I play Space Games is in fact scientific interest, but I am not one of those seeking Ultimate Realism at any cost. Games are games, they are meant to entertain and to be enjoyed.
I also highly question that many people call Elite a Simulator, because none of this Technology exists. And yes, I know about the Abucierre Drive etc pp, but it is a Theory, nothing else.
NASA has yet to come up with a working device. Hell, they are still researching the EM Drive. Which is where I would put my money too, if we want to go to Mars. But I stray from the topic.

Maybe you like immersion, a meaningful challenge, or just want to get your money's worth. Who can say for sure why you would want to? I'm just saying that people might. Sounds like a good time to me. :)

The problem here is, there is no immersion or meaningful challenge. At least not for me. I find the game is easy to play and understand, just tedious with everything you try to do.
Ammo Limits for example. I find those stupid as hell. If I cram cargo into my ship, I want to put ammo into it. No, I don't want to craft it in the middle of space in my cargo bay. If at all, give me blueprints and crafting stations and put the production into player hands. That would be immersion. Some weird background simulation ain't immersive for me.
Also too many (minor) factions to care about any of them. You can't even read up on what they stand for, why they exist, where they come from etc pp.
I wish they would take the best from Elite, Eve and X and make the Ultimate Space Game.

They already do that. BH RES = easy af, Assassination Missions = Medium, CZ = Hard, Open = Dark Souls.
IMHO

I think you'll find people do not consider you the center of their existence. He wasn't talking about your attitude hurting others experience, he was talking about how other people (as in: not you) may appreciate it better when they themselves (again: not you) take games seriously.

Dont dwell too long on it.

Again: there are people who are not you. 'others' is the technical term. They may think like you sometimes, but sometimes they have different ideas. For example, you may find something boring, but others may actually enjoy it. Its weird, freaky and bizarre, but it happens.

Heh. Indeed (on both counts)

Ironman mode could work very well if it was a separate mode with a separate character.
As long as no credits or assets could be swapped between the other 3 Normal modes and Ironman man mode.

I would even pay for this as a DLC option.

The idea has been brought up before. Something a little different would be when you die.......you're dead, and have to create another commander. When you kill another commander you never have to deal with them again, they go on your dead list, and only you can take them off. Of if a griefer kills you once, you're on his dead list and he can't repeat the offense unless you acknowledge he took you off his dead list.

Lost of ideas to keep things from getting out of hand, but FD has some good ones in the works. Let's see what they do.

For general play, absolutely no. The sociopaths that infest open will have even more power to ruin other players fun.

I propose an alternative. If your ship gets turned to scrap while you're wanted for murder you don't get a rebuy as insurance won't cover accidents caused by criminal use.

You know, not every topic is about people who scare you. ;)

People might actually take the game a bit more seriously and put in a bit more effort in learning how to play effectively.

It's depressing how often I see posts like this. Posts that essentially say "This person is not playing my way, therefore they don't deserve to enjoy it as much". As though players have to meet an arbitrary set standard defined by someone else in order to be allowed to enjoy the game they have paid money for.

I wouldn't consider myself a casual player, I've put in 600 hours and spent nearly £1000 on hardware for the sole purpose of playing this game. Where I find myself in new situations I make the effort to learn how to get the best outcome, but I do that because I don't consider the loss of a ship acceptable, not because I want my little "arbitrarily certified competent gamer" badge.

Others will die more, sometimes a lot more, but if they enjoy the game then what the hell does it matter. Why is it the business of any other player what damn standard this person is at? Why is it anyone else's concern? And why is there a frequent recurring refrain of "Oh he deserved it, he's not putting the effort in to learn to play the game properly" [for "properly", read "the way I play"].

The one that gripped me the most though is "take the game seriously".

No.
I won't.

I take my family, my relationships and my studies seriously. The game is a game. Have some perspective folks, it's there to be enjoyed. It's a beautiful, beautiful game, and I love playing it. But if I want to study hard at getting better at something that's actually important to my future, then I'll be studying differentiation and integration, and I'll be working on a trio of assignments.

You folks want to sit and count frames, that's fine. Enjoy the game your way, and I hope that you get as much enjoyment out of ED that you can.
But stop expecting everyone else to meet your standard, stop it with the "well you deserved to lose your ship" scorn, and stop it with the "Can we do something about these people who still won't play my way??" posts.

Some folks have different priorities, and the game isn't a competition.

[Note, this post is not so much directed at WR3ND as it is at the entire smarmy elitist (hah!) undercurrent on here.
