Umm, well I played the original Elite using the rubber keys on the spectrum! I hadn't really thought about it, but I'm guessing I'll either do the same on the PC, or get some kind of joystick. A flight yoke wouldn't be out of the question either...

I'm interested in the xbox controller but I played both Elite and Frontier using the keyboard and also Oolite so that will probably be my weapon of choice. Can't wait for beta to try out the controller v keyboard.

X box controller is better than Ps3 I have both and the consoles

Left analogue
Up - top thruster sends the ship down like a lift
Down - bottom thruster sends ship up like a lift
Left - left thrusters sends shop sideways to the right like a strafe
Etc.
Right stick Pitch and rotate as per an aircraft

Left bumper reduce main thrust or front thruster, right bumper increase main thruster

Bottom left action such as lock on target bottom right shoot main weapon

Dpad menu cycle
XYAB various custom buttons fire missile etc

Only thing missing is yaw

Yeah... took me ages to go from keyboard/mouse games for FPS etc, and joystick like CompoPro/Zipstick for other stuff to Joypad.... i can use either now

For FPS games the mouse keyboard is much better, but mainly due to the fact that you can move your target reticle to where you want it as fast as you can move the mouse.

Flying a ship is different as it's max turn speed is based on the maneuverability of the ship. Using a mouse to aim would feel unnatural in this case and an analogue stick would be much better.

Need to wait and play the game I guess but I reckoned Elite lent itself very well to a control pad. A good analogue joystick would prob be as good but always thought the crazy ones I've seen were more for the feel they gave the user having one in their hands rather than the technical advantage they gave their users over a good gamepad.

Apart from the number of keys at your fingertips, I don't see how a keyboard and mouse will feel as intuitive when flying a ship. The lack of an analogue stick for one is something I'd hate and would compare it to trying to steer in a driving game using the mouse!

Need some foot pedals then :)

Absolutely not the HOTAS systems are absolutely amazing to fly with not just feel, the ability to completely smoothly adjust your speed to tie in with a opponents climb or dive to keep your shot so perfectly centered is amazing. Also the fact that the throttle doesnt have to be sprung to centre so will stay where you put it and not have to be constantly held in position is great.

You can adjust your distance to your enemy without even thinking about it on the fly. Completely changes the piloting for the better.... At least that's my experience of the x52pro. I definitely fly better with it than with a stock analogue stick.

Not really I'm playing Oolite right now with the PS one, but I'll take your word that the X-box pads are decent :)

the thing about the Xbox controller is that thankfully its now considered a standard controller for the PC as all new game have it as an option, I used to think the Playstation controller was the bees knees but not anymore, PS controllers give up to easily.

Voted Xbox because I use an Xbox 360 controller for PC when I do use a gamepad, which is only for driving games really.
When I play Elite, or Oolite I use the keyboard, and when I play Vendatta, Frontier or any FPS game like GTA IV or Skyrim I use mouse/keyboard so what I will actually use will depend.
If Xbox controller has good support then I will use that.

I do not see why we could not use a joystick to manoeuvre the ship and a touch screen to select things on the hud or even target acquisition.
(I am hoping to get one of those laptops that can convert into a tablet for this game so hopefully touchscreen with keyboard combination will be supported ).

Just brought a X-box controller yesterday it feels like a brick, but there's a certain charm to it which I'm sure is going to grow on me :)

I own an ancient MS Sidewinder Precision Pro :) and a PS2 Controller via USB Adapter.
I think the stick will be the best method but i had only time for a quick config and a short take-off this morning. Setting up the stick is quite a task. I managed to assign the throttle control but i'm not sure, if this throttle wheel will do the job because there isn't a snap for the middle position.

How many "important" buttons are actually needed to get assinged to the controller?
If i finally figured out what's needed on the controls, the assigning would become more easier.

The MS Sidewinder has 9 buttons and the PS2 Pad has 12 buttons.
I haven't spotted on the fly how to assign multiple buttons. There's even a shift-marked Button on the MS Sidewinder. Using one button as shift will double the button-functions so i would do that on the PS2 controller too. Having two analogue sticks might be better, but then the thumbsticks do have a smaller radius...
this will take a while... but somehow it's fun too. :)
