Game unplayable both OPEN and SOLO, Frontier please fix your game!

That's exactly when I used to get it, also when NPC wings joined CZ's. In my case it was definitely bandwidth as if you run with CTRL+B enabled you can see it spike.
If it's a bandwidth clog, this can only mean one of two things. One, Frontier has GREATLY increased the bandwidth requirements of the game with the latest update, since I very rarely had this problem in my years playing the game before the update (often with much worse Internet than I have today). Or two, Frontier dumped a bunch of dirt on my router the day the September update dropped. Either way, it's likely Frontier's fault :p

It was worst for me around 1.3 IIRC, which was also when my connection was at its worst.

Another data point, CQC was perfectly smooth - I noticed no stutter or rubber banding or anything like that... This was immediately after spending time in Rubber Band station for the CG. Just sayin.

(I'm still not a big CQC fan)

Another data point - I don't see rubber-banding when instancing with a large group of players out in the middle of nowhere, like the epic PvP battles I've joined around the CG. Therefore I conclude that the rubber-banding is caused by sharing NPC telemetry between players in areas like a station.

Personally, I think most NPC traffic should be "diverted" during a CG, like how roads are closed to make way for VIPs and military convoys. I've seen more than enough CMDR traffic at the CG station. NCPs are not needed, except perhaps a couple of police ships outside. Surely this would clean up instancing!
Yup, in Flight Simulator the AI traffic is disabled when playing online. But that's a different case because there's no pew pew. In ED they should only disable it at stations and leave instead only the patrol.

One way to find out is to have a rubber-band CMDR join a silky smooth CMDR in the same instance and see what comes from it. Science!!

I think that's just what I said, but yesterday it didn't occur. We do have people with slow connections in our squad, I know the effect 🍻

O7,
🙃

Yes, I was thinking stations when I posted this. Even without rubber-banding, it would free up landing pads and the mailslot if these NPCs were diverted elsewhere for us VIPs of the Pilot's Federation.

I'd be curious if this rubber-banding is happening in RES now. I've never had that problem in the past, and there are usually a LOT of NPCs in a RES. Maybe I should go pirate some void-opal miners and see for myself :D

Random freezes do happen with that, stuttering and general lag. I didnt think OPs ram was on its way out but it actually does make sense, good find

Memory failure is that weird insidious thing that almost always begins with something along the lines of "but every other program works!" and slowly progresses to "nothing works". You will notice it with whatever you use the most since that's most likely to end up interacting with the duff memory locations, so it's easy to conclude that a software patch broke something. Thankfully, it's also easy to diagnose by running memory tests with some combination of sticks removed.

Just as a passing comment, I had random freezes in Windows that also accompanied blue screens, sometimes with error messages. I tried a windows reset, no luck. Did lots of scans via elevated prompts, no luck. I then did a fresh Windows install - still no luck. Eventually, last week, I thought I'd swap the ram around in the slots to see which one might be faulty. Took the case off and noticed one catch on a ram slot had popped open. This was clearly enough to stop it connecting properly and causing intermittent crashes.

On the upside a fresh Windows install makes the machine run much better. I still get the windows task bar freeze, which is another issue altogether but stuff breaking can take ages to diagnose.... especially if you don't check the obvious things first 😁

I just tried a different network (4G cellular, which is surprisingly good where I'm at) and am still getting the rubber-banding, so it's not my Internet connection, nor is it my router :p

You know this happens every time an update introduces a new bug. The climate change deniers blame the victims instead of the actual source of the problem. Just because it's snowing where you are at doesn't mean there isn't a universal problem that needs to be fixed.

Everyone knows that climate change is caused by a lack of pirates.

I can run prime95 and my i5 doesn't go above 50 C. You should check your GPU temperature as well. Remove the dust and apply new thermal paste if necessary.
The i7 7700k is well known for its heat issues. I have one myself and had to manually set a fan profile to keep it around 60C :D

I don't think it's that. I've used it last summer with 30°C in the room and now I have 10° less. I'm not using the stock dissipator and fan either.
The problem happens only in the game and other players confirmed so the issue is not coming from my pc.

It's much more logical (cough not really cough) to assume all our hardware is collectively suffering from a variety of ailments immediately after an update, rather than the simpler explanation that the update has bugs.

Since my brand new gaming laptop is within warrantee, I guess I better get it replaced ASAP!

60C is fine, max temperature is ~95C before the CPU starts to throttle down. Still, high temperatures can indicate issues with dust or thermal paste. If the case doesn't get enough air it's also possible that the GPU gets too hot.

The discussion wasn't about you but the other guy who has a CPU temperature ~80C.

Just because someone suffers from rubber banding other people can't have different issues?

Mine didn't even come with a fan, but I never use stock CPU coolers anyway! But yes, the mostly likely explanation is ED has started clashing with something on your system, maybe a driver or background programme.

Or wait for the next December update... Do 2 wrongs make 1 right for a PC?

Just a reminder, I fired up ED on my PS4 and also witnessed rubber-banding and stutter* there as well, which rules out the "something on YOUR system, driver, etc." possibility since unique drivers and background programs is not an issue on consoles.

* The whiplash stutter is harder to detect on PS4 because it's a horrible, stuttering slideshow of a mess by default. On my buttery-smooth gaming PC, the stuttering is very obvious (and jarring) when it happens. I can't imagine dealing with it in VR.

Did your PS4 and Laptop lock up completely and you had to press reset?
