Gamepad?

Can anyone help?
I've struggled with the mouse/keyboard controls and the old Saitek Joystick I resurrected from my cellar is clearly busted (only goes in one direction!), so I thought I'd try an X360 controller.

I installed the Microsoft drivers and the game pad is recognised by Windows, but when I start Elite Dangerous, I don't get an option to use the gamepad in the control settings. It's not there as an option in the drop-down list of control configurations. What am I missing?

I bought a wireless Xbox 360 controller for windows (comes with the dongle included and I'm on windows 8.1). It is working ok for me at the moment but I have an open bug report where if you don't turn on the controller before launching ED the controller isn't recognised and doesn't work at all (you can't even manually map the controls). I'm not sure about this but suspect that if the first time you launch ED the controller isn't on it won't show up in the list as an option. Mapping manually can go horribly wrong if you then do it as digital input (you end up with full input on analogue).

Even now if I launch ED with the controller off and then turn it on it won't work, I have to quit out with the keyboard or mouse, turn on the controller then launch ED again, even though gamepad is set as my input device.

Tbh I've not seen many other people that seem to have this issue but what you are saying sounds very similar to the problems I had (have).

That aside, I rather like using the xbox controller, especially for playing while plugged into the TV. I've changed some settings though, and made particular use of the way you can remap controls for when your gear is down. The main issue I have is not being able to find a way to have lateral thrust (left and right) mapped and have yaw mapped at the same time without the gear down (and without yaw on roll or initial roll). I want something like lateral trust on low roll... Anyways, I digress.

Forgive me if I’m wrong but I believe having to connect your peripheral before launching Dangerous is by design. The game needs to connect with the peripheral for initialisation and calibration in order to function correctly in-game. Take care and Elite!

You can buy a wired Xbox 360 controller from GameStop for about $20. It took some effort to get my controls set up exactly how I want them, but now I can do everything I want while slouching in my chair and relaxing

Possibly, but it is a bit odd. If I launch other games that can use the Xbox controller (like Tomb raider or farcry 3) and then realise I've not turned the controller on, those games respond as soon as I do turn it on.

If they can ED should be able to. Otherwise you end up with people having issues like the OP having to ask why said device isn't working when it would for another game.

I'm glad it's not just me that makes that mistake. Sometimes I end up swearing at the screen and hammering at the buttons before I realise what's amiss
