Gank of theYear?! These guys are driving people out of Open and ruining the game for everyone

Frontier should provide pve server, no reasons for why not and they should have done it from start and almost no one will disagree with that. Complain about that they don't offer pve server and not about getting killed in open which rules allow that. Would providing pve server be hard for frontier? No. Why they haven't done it? Only they can answer that, probably same reasons as not able to target skimmers no commodity storage. But that isn't reason to complain about open while many enjoy open as it is. Taking fun from others isn't solution when adding one more mode is so simple thing.

There are reasons against it, but self-labelled PvE players aren't prepared to see them and still can't give a reason for choosing to be in Open as opposed to Private/Solo/Mobius.

I don't know how much easier they could have made it for us. The majority of games have "online" and that's that. The moment I saw ED's game mode screen, I said to myself it's a very considerate way of doing it. You have two game modes where you're safe and one where you aren't. If you choose to ignore that it's not my problem, but stop trying to strip out the fun of a potentially true open play environment because you are determined to shape ED into "Euro Truck Simulator in Space".

Solo=play by yourself. Private=play with your friends or predefined group. Open=anything goes. How hard can it be?

Rubbish. Utter rubbish.

Firstly this style of gameplay is not "legal" inside the game, so get your words correct.

The word you require is "valid" gameplay. Not "legal".

Secondly, you are trying to make it sound like carrying shields is the difference between a gank-death and escape. C'mon. Who are you trying to kid, huh. Sorry, but the point about shielded versus shieldless is misplaced in this thread. It just sounds like you are trying to pull some kind of justification where actually there isn't any.

Mate you clearly dont understand the concept of high low and anarchy systems. In an anarchy system as there is NO law. Also there is a video posted further back which I suggest you watch before commenting again that shows that a shielded correctly setup T9 is perfectly viable when coupled with a skilled exit strategy. BTW If I want to gank you then it's tough luck. In space away from the governed systems I won't even get a wanted or bounty for killing you.

Open is not a cesspool.

I'm not trying to convert people to open but if you don't fly in open you probably should openly state your assumptions, especially if your only evidence is based on a forum full of people that would rather play paddy-cake with other commanders than experience any actual risk/danger.

Sigh... another crime & punishment thread....

There must be some sort of deal going on in FDEV's offices where everybody gets free pizza whenever one of those pops up.

Guys, it's ok. Just tell us. We'll .... ahem.... "gank eachother" and post stuff on YouTube so that you can still get your free pizzas. Just fix the damn crime & punishment already!

The elusive escape you describe may or may not be possible. For even a shielded T9, I hypothesise that escape may not be possible dependent upon the number of attackers, the vessels involved, and the amount if engineering that has gone into developing those vessels as over powered gank-machines.

Hope we can agree on that hypothesis.

Probably not. Taking 'shields' to mean MaxClass-A-Rated, because filling one of your smaller internals with an underachieving generator is only wasting cargo space, then any CMDR should be able to survive everything the game could throw at them, including a wing of META-build CMDR FDLs.

I really don't mind griefers and trolls. I would just wish that FD would give me the option to put my own bounty and its size on an griefers ship. I got millions of credits to spare, and wouldn't it be the most amazing counter troll to put a couple of hundreds of million credits bounty on a griefers ship and see people and friends turning on them for that sweet sweet credit. As the bounty system is now you can just get in a suicidewinder and wait for someone to come and kill you. But if the bounty stuck to the ship and not the pilot, people would maybe think twice about shooting exploring vessels and other defenseless victims to pieces in their awesome clippers and anacondas. Let the Hunters become the hunted i say, though im aware that it perhaps would open a venue for a whole new type of griefing.

No way. This would not work. What happens is they build up a massive bounty then get their mates to kill them to make money. Rinse, reverse and repeat. Way to make the griefers rich mate.

The game is designed with a huge negative feedback loop to prevent this type of activity....<shrug> Play where you like, with the people you like, and have exactly the same equal input into the game.

Ssssh...are you telling me this isn't what forums were intended for?!?!

:0

I was about to make a thread letting everyone know I'd been attacked by a pirate in a RES, and another to let everyone know my ammo just ran out.

Best solution:

Players who kill unwanted players should be given the wanted status and bounty as it currently exist, plus, a Galactic fine to the Pilots Federation for the cost of the victims insurance.

Failure to pay closes the ability to re-fuel, re-arm and repair at any dock that isn't an anarchy.

Sure, a lot of commanders can absorb this financially, but it will certainly mean others reconsider....

Personally, I haven't been ganked, but I when I play in open, I am not really in the highly populated systems. I also play a lot of Mobius due to my internet connection and my preference for pave.

Absolutely not.

Broadcasting who was killed by whom gives griefers exactly what they want: Infamy, renown and recognition. It would actively encourage griefing. What other way could a Commander have his name broadcast and his victory or defeat shoved in the entirety of the player base? What better way to get attention and become renowned under such a system than go on a killing spree?

By all means list the number of CMDRs killed in a system in the prior hour as part of security report, but individual kills should absolutely not be broadcast and any data has to be anonymous.

We can question the issue of showing the name of the "assailant"... on a screen most players would never even look at. ie: It would only be of real use to player groups actively looking for these sort of players. And isn't this all part of the bounty hunter job spec?

But even if the assailants name was missed out, at least it would give active groups some information to work on.

And this is my "simply solution". Something that would at least give player groups a means to police the game. But in truth it would be pointless. The gankers would die infrequently enough that it would be of not issue to them - ie: A rebuy here and there would be nothing to them... Hardly a deterrent!

Consider the situation at the moment. We have gankers (I'll call them griefers as that's what they get gicks out of causing), killing Pilots Federation pilots over and over, and then tens of minutes later, they're flying through Pilots Federation space into Jameson? How is this a good mechanic? Does that feel like something is balanced?

And again we're not talking about people using a mechanic in the sense of attacking another CMDR to get their cargo, or bounty. We're talking about individuals purely getting a kick out of annoying/aggrivating another player as much as they can.

Why there is no group (as the fuel rats) that can punish the gankers ?

I mean if 50 CMDRs decide to chase down these space scums and destroy them as much as needed for them to stop it will be a win-win for everyone

I bet after 20 rebuy of FDL you become more civilized

So I saw this video on YouTube. They attack a shieldless T9 and laugh about it. They didn't try to pirate him. Sad! I'll provide the link via PM for anyone who wants to see it.

If the T9 had combat logged, he'd be the one in the wrong and FD would threaten to ban him. But gankers can just go around and kill for the lulz and be treated by FD as heroes. Sad!

Sad! Sad! Sad!

Just sad!

Sad!

What is also sad is flying a T9 in open without shields and then complaining when the inevitable happens. Open is not kindergarten, although I guess that is a notion so complex that it will never fully sink in.

And yes, FD should re-work C&P as everyone has been saying since day #1. Does not excuse acting like an idiot followed by acting like a dramaqueen, ofcourse.

Well you could maybe tweek it in a way were you put a deathmark on a ship. Like if i paid 200 million credits for lets say a week. Then in that week there would be a deathmark on that ship, so everyone who killed it would get lets say 10.000 credits pr. kill, of bounty during that week.

If the bounty racked up, they would perhaps be killed more, and then their repair bills would tank their economy.

...awesome idea! You are quite right. Create a PvP superpower and use it for protection. Open then becomes a more dynamic place and you've shaped it into that. Welcome to "blaze your own trail".

FTR there's already AA, which will try protect against gankers, but a couple of smaller factions I noticed in some places grouping together for exactly this.

Go look at the Groups subforum, put something together exactly for this. Or I believe the Code has a thing going on as part of the privateers that will allow CMDRs to assassinate for the right price.

For those that want peace, you have peace already in Mobius/Private/Solo. This is a perfectly valid response. Go show 'em who is boss... ;)

Its a common thing here. The louder people scream about griefers the higher the odds they aint even in Open. The more they protest something must be done immediately about 'grief tactics' the higher the chance they've never actually seen it ever happen at all. Its a bit as with politics: in the Netherlands the majority of support for the major right-wing xenophobic party comes from rural regions where people have little to no actual experience with anything they are so scared about.

I do understand the concept of security. Search my posts on the topic for proof. The trouble here is that (ganking) *still* occurs in "high" and "medium" security systems and the antagonists pretty much get away with it in game due to there being no real *balance* of crime/consequence. You know this yo be true as well as I do.

Nice SIG BTW...

The differing modes idea and the way it works is one of the best things about ED. It is certainly not perfect of course, but we don't have an SDC or any other like minded group in the private groups in which I play. Occasionally someone will come into Mobius for 3 minuets of hur hur hur but they soon get kicked and everyone carries on.

The answer is very simple. Screw open. Eventually these people will be the only people left in it and everyone will be happy (ish).

You'd only prompt more people to begin killing if killing promised them a good fight, at least in the groups that I fly with.
