Ganking ?

I must admit that at heart i am most at home playing single player games, I havent played any MMO's  so when i heard that Elite dangerous was going to be multi-player i was slightly apprehensive at the idea of having to rely on the vagaries of other people for my gaming experience. however i thought i would embrace it, join the community and see where it takes me, might be fun.

That was until a few days ago when i first came across the word Ganking

I really hope most sincerely that Elite Dangerous wont be like this, it sounds like a hateful way to get your kicks :(

don't get me wrong i'm quite looking forward to a bit of dog fighting with my fellow players i'm sure it will be exhilarating and great fun, but being picked on by a gang of other players wouldn't be fun for me.

does frontier or the community have a strategy for dealing with this blight?
am i worrying unnecessarily?

Ganging up on vessels is a well worn tactic used be pirates anyway, so they might as well be players.

You can always play solo mode. In multiplayer, there will be strict laws to curb the enthusiasm of fanatics laser. You can also to appeal in professional killers
to eliminate predators who is harassing you.

;)

Yes, Patrick_68000 is right.
Players who indulge in this sort of thing will soon have a large reward offered for there destruction, so they will far to busy avoiding bounty hunters to trouble you.

And in-game punishments don't work against those who are not playing the game as intended, we've been here before.

"Oh look, I've got a bounty! That'll stop me! I mean, even if I just completely ignore these bounty hunters then they'll kill me and I'll respawn back at the space station with no bounty whatsoever! And then I can just get straight back to ganking!"

Playing solo mode isn't a valid solution, as you then miss out on the whole social side of Elite Dangerous.

Never being around long enough to buy a decent ship or equipment will soon get boring. That's probably the best deterrent.

?

To whom?

Nobody starts griefing with their starting ship and equipment. They'll play the game innocently until they've got a decent ship and equipment, and then the griefing continues forever.

Meanwhile, those who are victims of griefing will never be around long enough to buy a decent ship or equipment and will be deterred from the game.

Well as I understand Elite isn't a true MMO and to a certain extent you can choose the people you play with in a 'friends' list. How this works we'll have to see... But it should limit true piracy ala EVE Online, where people basically make pains in the asses out of themselves rules lawyering and playing an elaborate game of rock paper scissors.

And welcome to the community. We're a nice bunch mostly.

Do you respawn in the game with acquired ships and equipment?.

Yes - but even if you didn't, the penalty would be either so little it does nothing to discourage griefing, or so high it discourages all player-player combat. These groups necessarily overlap, such that the "middle ground" both fails to discourage griefing and discourages player-player combat. It additionally annoys those who wish to be immersed in the game and don't want to have to separate "human players" from "AI players".

As I've stated before, the only way to have any effective impact on griefing is to remove negative player interactions. Doing so also annoys those who wish to be immersed in the game, as well as those who enjoy shooting and being shot by other players, which is why it should be entirely optional.

"Solo" would manage that, but it'd also completely remove the social aspect, which is one of the main draws to this game over the original. Hence the constant requests for a PvE group.

As I understand it, yes... unless you're playing in iron-man mode (I think).

Yeah, being killed in Ironman Mode gives you the option of continuing in the normal mode or having to start all over again.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about the option to continue in normal mode. Can someone please explain why that option is there? Surely, if you pick iron-man mode and get killed, that should mean starting over... full stop!

Well, regardless of whether the option to continue in normal mode is there or not, Ironman Mode consists solely of those who haven't died. In other words, by "continuing" you're actually migrating your Commander to another, related universe where it's still valid.

Presumably it's to reduce the entry barrier (I think more people will accept "lose out on a bonus if I die" than "must start from beginning if I die") which increases the population of the mode and makes it generally more interesting. It doesn't make the mode any easier (death is still permanent), but it does make it more palatable.

I'll probably start off playing Ironman because of this - I fully expect to be dead within a week, which will be the end of my time in Ironman, but I'll have given it a go. If I thought that my week's progress would be completely erased upon death, I would avoid it completely.

Thanks. <scratches head> So it's iron-man mode with a get-out clause - that makes no sense to this dumb pilot.

The whole idea of an iron-man mode makes no sense to me. You know when you've died, there is no need for a mode. People have been playing iron-man games for decades without specific "modes".

Also, let's not start the whole PvP vs PvE thing again, I'm sure all the ground's been covered at least 4 or 5 times. :p

There also other strategy. My bet there escorts you can higher. My guess this could be AI or people. Or if more then one person is on a trade route. Let say to point A to B you can also protect each other.

The Ironman mode is like a trapezist, who works with a safety net. If the player falls, he can continue in normal mode. So he becomes like a bird with small wings, who fly less high.

I think the reason Ironman mode has the normal mode option is because Frontier let people register a Commander name. If they did a true Dead-Is-Dead mode, you wouldn't be able to use that Commander name again.

When I fly around the galaxy I don't know if you've died or not - I do in real life as dead people don't move / talk - but in game ... I want to know the people I fly with are living people, not dead reincarnate ;)

Digital Duck summed it up nicely just above - Ironman is just simply a more realistic way of viewing the galaxy.
