Ok, I have had a chance to read every post in this thread and still not sure what to do.
Some background to help those who might try to help.
I have a Dell 790 DT i72600 3.4GHz Win7 Pro machine that I had put a GTX745 OEM in and it works just fine with GeFe 3.13.1.30 and graphics driver 388.13
Since there is no way the 790 case would let me put a 1050 ti card in it, I purchased a Dell 990 MT also i7 2600 3.4Ghx Win 7 Ultimate but it will turbo to 3.8 (have not figured out how to do that yet)
I used Windows Easy Transfer to move all the files that would move from the 790 to the 990.
GeFe 3.13.1.30 moved but evidently the other drivers didn't since the 745 OEM was still in the 790.
I moved the 754OEM to the 990 and on the first start up Windows went to the internet to find drivers. I ended up with the 391.35 video driver.
I have not been able to record anything since. It will screenshot.
I have uninstalled GeFe 3.13.1.30 and installed 2.11.4.0 (also tried the two older V3 GeFes and nothing worked) but at present cannot get the in game overlay to come up and I cannot find a list of the V2 hotkeys.

This looks like the work around to get to the in game overlay with ALT-Z >>>> "C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA GeForce Experience\LaunchGFExperience.exe" -shadowplay <<<< Question is, do I just rename this >>> LaunchGFExperience.exe << to this >>> LaunchGFExperience.exe-shadowplay <<<
But it still looks like I need to downgrade from 391.35 video driver (Not sure how to do that) since that appears to be the common thing that causes the problems no matter if using V2 or V3 of GeFe.

Seriously considering pulling the 745OEM out of the 990
Restarting the machine and uninstalling all the Nvidia stuff
Using Easy Transfer to make a CD/DVD with the Nvidia stuff from the 790 on it. (alternatively just downloading the appropriate stuff from FileHorse)
Putting the card back in and pulling the WiFi adapter so windows has to use the files on the CD/DVD since that combination works.

Bear in mind, I don't mind having the recording running all the time. I set the Quick save (VA COMMAND "SHORT SAVE") to 30 minute and leave that running all the time on F10 for when I need to save something interesting that I didn't know was going to be interesting. I have a VA command RECORD to toggle F9 the on and off as needed when I just want a couple minutes of recording.

The only thing that ive noticed with shadowplay and elite is that i have to make sure the launcher is closed upon startup of game or shadowplay only records that with game audio. Other than that ive not noticed any issues.

You should have a shortcut to GFExperience.exe or LaunchGFExperience.exe on your desktop or Start Menu.
For my Windows 7 x64 set up and v2.11.4.0 these are both in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA GeForce Experience

The -shadowplay option works with both.

Right click on the shortcut to get the properties window. Click on the Shortcut tab.

In the Target field add the option to the very end (note the space before the -shadowplay):

"C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA GeForce Experience\GFExperience.exe" -shadowplay

Click on Ok to close the properties window.

Now when you double click on the shortcut you will get the GeForce Experience Shadowplay options box.

The default for manual recording is Alt F9.

Here is some things that don't work for me.
GeFe Ver 3.12.0.84 GeFe Ver 3.10.X.X (the default GeFe version that came with Driver 388.13) and GeFe 3.13.1.30
Driver Ver 388.13
All I can do is take screen shots.
The In Game overlay will open and close with ALT-Z but none of the buttons do anything.
The FPS counter works
The Status Indicator doesn't work.
It did, for the first time EVER find Elite Dangerous and it will optimize using GeFe Ver 3.12.0.84.
When I run the Windows Trouble Shooter on any version of the GeFe it reports "INCOMPATIBLE APPLICATION".
This is starting to look like a computer specific issue since the Combination of GeFe 3.13.1.30 and Driver 388.13 work just fine on the Dell 790.

UPDATE ---- Got up this morning with the brilliant, I thought, idea of running GeFe in ADMINISTRATOR mode.
Right clicked the ICON,
Clicked RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
GeFe updated to 3.13.1.30 even though I had all the update stuff turned off but I thought, no problem, the driver didn't change from 388.13 so this machine is now the same as the other one except for ADMINISTRATOR MODE
Absolutely no change in anything from earlier report.
Still only does screenshot only in the game even though I have SHARE the desktop turned on.

I will make a try at the GeFe V2 thing and update this in a couple days. Right now I would like to get some game time in.

I got tired of all the problems I was having with GeForce Experience and switched exclusively to OBS Studio for both streaming and recording, and shadowplay like clips. It just works with no issues and I have not missed GeForce Experience at all. I highly recommend you consider switching over and save yourself some aggravation.

It takes a little bit of effort to get your resolution/bitrate and audio channels set right, but the quality of the recordings is top notch and it allows you to have separate game and mic audio streams for easy editing later. And if you edit in Adobe Premiere, you solve the VBR audio desync problems too, just by moving to OBS.

OK, I'm practically persuaded. It's been a while since I've made a PvP vid and I just can't trust/work with GeForce Experience any longer.

I edit using Windows Moviemaker. Totally happy with that, even though Microsoft appear to hate it.

Do you have any tips for someone whose technical knowledge extends only as far as how to aim a rail gun?

I don't do videos much, but in my travels also found GeForce a pain in the backside and resource hungry.

Tried the Win 10 Game-bar and found it dead easy and light on resources. Reasonable quality too. Don't even have to have the Game-bar up (runs in the background). I just say "record that" or "snap that" in Voice Attack and the content is sitting in my selected folder when I close ED. It's now built into Win 10. Here's a link to a brief tutorial.

Oh, should add, it's just for screenshots and recording/streaming videos..not so much editing. For that you will still need an editing app.

If your Geforce Experience v2.11.4.0 used to work well, but the icon in the corner of the screen suddenly disappears (causing the recording to stop), try disabling the Windows 10 Game Bar and DVR.

Ok, I can get this to work but only once at a time. Sad there is no low res screenshot function. Sad there doesn't seem to be a way to record the desktop.
I closed it and then tried to open it again and the shortcut goes to the Updater and only offers to update to V 3.10.0.95 (the version that comes wit driver 388.13) even though I have disabled check for updates and I have windows updater disabled.

SO, I guess I now need a step by step to prevent the update.

The only reliable way to get what used to be called Shadowplay working with ED is to Alt-Tab out of ED once it's fully started and kill the launcher. GeForce Experience seems to think that the launcher is the game and captures that. This behaviour changed when GeForce Experience 2 came out.

It's not only ED that this happens with, other games which use launchers seem to have the same issue.

I was not and do not have to do that on my Dell 790 Win7 Pro machine. All the nvidia stuff works as advertised.

Ditto, shadowplay with Geforce Experience 2 continues to work perfectly for me.

On my Dell 790 Win7 Pro it all works correctly with the GeFe 3.13.1.30 and Driver 388.13

I cannot get this same configuration to do anything except in game screenshots on my Dell 990 Win7 Ultimate machine.

It may be the case on your machine for whatever reason I don't know but not here. I never had to kill any launcher. Btw, what launcher are you talking about, the game launcher or the GeForce experience launcher? Anyway, something must be odd on your machine...

ED launcher. (Windows 10 Pro, GeForce Experience 3.)

This is both on my "desktop" and gaming laptop.

ED is installed directly and not via Steam, if that makes any difference, and GeForce Experience knows about the games and can configure the "optimised" defaults.

Ok, on the off chance it was a monitor driver problem, I swapped the monitors and the 745 OEM back and forth between the machines.

The Dell 790 Win7 Pro still works in game and desktop either monitor, the Dell 990 Win 7 Ultimate still only screen shots in the game both monitors.

I have OBS STUDIO installed. Now working out how to get it to work.

Ok. Got OBS paired up with Voice Attack to start and stop recording. Now to work out a way to have an indicator of the recorder status.

Well, I am done. Now neither computer will work correctly. GeFe 3.13.1.30 is attempting update the driver to 390.77 and it keeps failing. No longer get the recorder status indicator on the desktop or in the game. only thing either machine will do is screen shot in the game.

Going to devote my energy to OBS. I have it starting and stopping recording using a VA command.

Unsubscribing from this thread.
Thanks to those who tried.

I'm sort of surprised how many people seem to use geforce experience? Has it become required in recent drivers? I very deliberately don't install that stuff, and for my 1050Ti i still had that option last time i checked (around jan of this year).

I think it's partly force of habit. When I first got my 970 I didn't know better and just let nvidia install all its stuff. The Shadowplay stuff just worked out of the box so I got used to it just being there. Later, after I got the 1080, when GeFex3 came out I hated it. It was ugly, seemed to require online registration and just made me realise what a useless pile of bloatjunk it was. But I liked and relied on the video capture so I found a way to work around that, by rolling back to GeFex2. I'll stick with that for as long as it continues to work but if nvidia make that impossible I'll just ditch it completely and switch to OBS or something similar.
