Genetic Sampler Pulse Mode?

Hi all,

I was lead to believe from somewhere that there was a second mode to using the sampler that involved this pulse wave that detects which specimens you have scanned and where the non-scanned ones are located. For some reason, I can't switch the mode of the Genetic Sampler though.

And since I am here, can I also ask... When you map a planet, you see the number of Biological Signals. But then, how can you separate them, so that you can easily track each distinct signal to a lifeform? Appreciate it, Commanders... Cheers.

Pulse is the secondary fire mode. Not secondary mode.

And you can switch between layers in DSS mode, there is a key binding for that. I think default is the tab left and tab riqht (as mine was already set to Q and E).

Yes, it's important to be fully in DSS mode as if you were going to fire more probes in order to change the filter. It's not enough to just be in analysis mode. Hopefully that changes at some point.

Yep, having to fly all the way to SC just to change the layer is an oversight.

I cannot get my CMDR to fire the scan pulse. I have no more ideas how to do it. I do not see a "primary fire" nor "secondary fire" in the on foot key bindings. I have mapped a joystick button for secondary fire in ship and SRV controls, but that does nothing on foot. I have also mapped a key and a joystick button for the "Toggle tool mode" function, but that does nothing.

I have also read instructions in Wikia here: Genetic sampler and watched tutorial videos on YouTube.

I am already quite frustrated with this, but on the other hand I am already a Taxonomist, so I can work without the scan pulse if my CMDR is too stupid to learn to use it.

I’m away from my computer right now but I am sure there is a secondary fire mode for on foot controls.
I use it to aim down the sights for weapons and to fire a pulse of the bio scanner.

All the other tools (energy link and NPC scanner) can be toggled between legal and illegal mode.

BUT - there used to be a bug (could be it’s still there what with FDev being FDev) where the pulse wouldn’t fire if you previously used ADS on a weapon.
The pulse simply wouldn’t do anything.

In such case you need to switch back to the primary weapon (where it would immediately switch to ADS) and then disable ADS.
Then you could switch back to the bio scanner and the pulse would work.

Scratch that, I just remembered that was an issue for primary fire not working on the bio scanner.

Yes! The scan pulse works with the Aim Down Sight -button! 😲 Thank you ferus! The key binding UI does not mention that, so it is a secret additional function of ADS, I see. The tool even has the text "Sample mode" on it to cause confusion, even though it cannot change to any other mode! 😠

It would make too much sense if it followed the switch button logic of other tools, albeit they tried their best to make those as confusing as possible too (for instance the cutter tool listing a certain mode without having any alternative modes available).
