Newcomer / Intro Getting a Commander Name?

Always good to see a returning CMDR!

You'll find that there are a number of useful additions to ship's equipment:-
1) Advanced docking computer - this will not only dock your ship, but also autolaunch it from a station (planet landings are your problem!)
2) Filght assist - choose your destination e.g. Hutton Orbital, turn on the flight assist, point the ship at the target and read a book... You'll drop out of supercruise almost near enough to turn the docking computer on!

If you're feeling flush, try the HCS Voice commands - you'll need spaekers/headphones and a microphone as well (and someone who will accept you shouting at the PC). It can make life a lot easier to remember a voice command rather than a key press.

Enjoy,

Colin

You mean Supercruise Assist - Flight Assist is something else entirely.

Found a CMDR Name!
I skipped the Tutorials and pressed START and it took me the CMDR naming page! My original name of WOMBAT1940 was already given, but (just to see) I re-named myself WOMBAT80 (can't think why 🤭) and continued. Just finally, I've returned to the MAIN MENU and selected the TUTORIAL Tab so as to complete the tutorials which I had previously skipped to get a CMDR Name. Sorry, just added all this detail as it might help others looking for help. WOMBAT80 OUT.
In case you want your old name back, you should be able to get it by contacting support.

Interesting. I don't remember (naturally 😏) autolaunch. However, I'm sure I would have used it as the only launch option. Manual launch and docking seem far too risky to me and would have given station overseas many sleepless nights!

When I started ED from scratch again, and allowed to select a CMDR name, my old name, Wombat1940, was already entered for me. I, for some unknown reason, elected to change it to Wombat80. The original Wombat1940 referred to the year of my birth and I have used it extensively elsewhere; the new Wombat80 (you've guessed it ;)) refers to my current age. :D

The disadvantage is that you will need to change the name of Cmdr each year. :)

Welcome back Wombat!

I took a couple of years off playing and came back. The things that had changed which I had to try and get my head around were:

- The exploration tools changes. The way they operate is totally different than before. I wouldn't worry about looking into it now but if you decide to go exploring the universe, make sure you check them out first. I had to map buttons and adjust things to use them properly.

- Cockpit mode. At some point you will probably get an error about being in the wrong cockpit mode when pressing the trigger. For some reason things like weapons will only work in combat mode and other tools in analysis mode. Why they added this I don't really know, someone else might be able to enlighten us. The way I see it, it's like having a safety on a gun so you don't accidentally fire at a station or something. I had to map a button for this in settings too.

Have fun and don't forget to ask questions if you have any.

Thanks T. Yes, I hadn't realized they (ED) were making changes on the run. 😮 Hopefully all for the better. However, to be fair, that would always be their intent. ;)
But what a nice feeling: they are out there, after all these years, still working on ED. 👍 So many sims get fantastic upgrades (eg. Freelancer to Crossfire 2.0) and then just fizzle out.

Those who know me, from CF2.0 days, will maybe remember my personally adopted, totally neutral, playing mode. An enemy-free, hence unarmed, Galaxy explorer and Systems mapper. That will be my aim here. To play in the same mode: enemy-free and unarmed. Just to explore and record. We will see ..... ;)

Not true ........😮.
I'm not getting any older ........ :D . Not sure if that's a positive or otherwise ......;)

All joking aside, I should have stuck to Wombat1940. It's me. Maybe, before I get too far, and since I can't change my name mid-game, I should start again. I've found old threads by Wombat1940 (ie. me) asking the same stupid questions Wombat80 is asking now !
Edit: Hmmmm ....... and, thank goodness, I am Wombat1940 here at the Forum and that makes me more than comfortable ....

That is what I meant with contacting support, but since you just started, you may as well start again, I guess :) Right on, CMDR, and enjoy the time!

In regard to starting ED again by CLEAR SAVING, and how to immediately CMDR NAME upon starting again, I was going to record a step by step procedure on how to do so. However, I think starting, restarting ED for the first time is fairly straight forward and systematic by following the ED new game setup procedure. It's just that it doesn't provide for your CMDR NAMING until after you have completed the tutorials (Thanks to Northpin for the lead on that 👍 ).

Hence, to name yourself early in the setup, my only inclusion to the procedure would be at some point:
- return to the Main Menu and select SKIP TUTORIAL,
- this will take you to the CMDR naming page,
- once you've named yourself,
- complete the balance of the prescribed ED setup,
- then re-select to do the tutorials (if that is your wish) at the Main Menu page by selecting CONTINUE.

I did a video of a clear save restart last year (skipping the initial "training"):
Nice one Para. 👍
My texting steps seem to match the same steps in your video. However, your video covers all the other steps and makes it far more valuable than my name changing only steps.

I, like you, ignored the prescribed mission upon completion of the ED setup, but did so by exiting to the Main Menu. From there I commenced the training tutorials in sequential order, which surprisingly had me commence in space mastering the Thrust: forward, reverse, up, down; Pitch: up, down; Roll: left, right; Yaw: left, right; Target and Headlock toggle.

That done I selected the Docking and Travel Tutorial which again surprisingly had me docked at a Romanek's Folly with some bloke wanting me to do a cargo run for him. 🤨 And it's not an auto-launch as it is at the tutorial starting at Morson Dock; it's a manual launch. 😲
However, I can now do a manual and an auto-launch, so nothing lost. :)

Maybe there are two sets of tutorials: an old and a new?
