Newcomer / Intro Getting Back to ED After Many Years

I am an original backer of ED-Alpha/Beta days from 2014 and did just a few missions at that time not much; I think I was still in the default Sidewinder. I am basically a Newb again and now want to get back.

Question: All my installs are under Frontier Dev. and with the Steam Spring Sale I want to purchase Odyssey. I think I know that Is it possible to transfer and go with Steam from my Frontier account...correct? or I have that wrong. If I can transfer, Steam has it for $11.25 where here is at $15.00 I know it's just a few dollars more here and I can go either way but is it better to have the game on Steam or through Frontier.

Thanks in Advance!

Personally I prefer to update and launch from the Frontier launcher but it doesn't make all that much of a difference.

I'd give my money directly to Frontier just to be independent of Steam, and if Steam has some advantage you can always start it from Steam anyways.

That said I have an old account bought on Steam with Odyssey bought on Steam which I start directly from the Frontier launcher. This doesn't work for base game copies bought from Steam for the last couple of years, but I can start that account from the Frontier launcher, which suggests that if you add Odyssey on Steam you'll still be able to start the account from both launchers.

Interesting....Thank You Jack. I very much appreciate the quick reply. I think I'll just purchase it here and not bother with Steam.

Thanks again!

If you're an alpha or beta backer you should already have Odyssey.

Really? Well, I don't have it in my account. I haven't been around ED in a while so I wouldn't know anything about it. I never got an email either. You sure about that?
It won't be in your account. The files I see in my account haven't changed in years. Alpha and beta backers essentially have a lifetime pass. If you log in to the Launcher with that account, you'll have Odyssey available.

But this is what I have when I go into the Launcher/Versions Games. What am I missing? Maybe because I wasn't on the Alpha?..see pics attached.

Edit: I don't have Odyssey. I went into the game to mess around a bit and in the system map to plot a route it said I needed the Odyssey expansion pack. No biggie, I'll purchase it when I get a chance soon. Thanks

Are you sure you are using the correct account? The account you signed up to beta or alpha for should automatically have the Odyssey licence (when you say alpha/beta - you do mean the KickStarter?). And yes, you'd see it in the Launcher itself if you have it (which you don't based on the screenshots).

Edit:
Though tbh, I'm not sure what that beta is in your account, as it looks like you also had to purchase Horizons? I thought all original beta backers (i.e. of the base game) had the lifetime pass. Was there a beta offer at any point that didn't include it?

I must be one of the beta users that didn't include lifetime pass. As you can see on my purchase account, the beta was offered later on after the kickStarter was finished I believe for $75. The lifetime backers maybe backed the game for more $$$. So that might be why. Yes, I also had to purchase Horizons as well. in any case, it's fine, I will purchase Odyssey, it's not expensive and will continue to support the developers anyway. So all is good.

Thanks for the replies and information. I really do appreciate it.

I too am a kickstarter backer played ED before Horizons and Steam. I bought Horizons when it arrived but not Odyssey and thus had to purchase it when I returned a month or so ago.

A Steam key comes with the base game.

If you can’t find it, ask FD Support, they will tell you where it is.

Effectively if you had the original base code or even a profile you already own the most upto date version of the game 4.0.

Buying the game off Steam is just buying a loading portal; you don’t download the game from Steam, your only buying a loading menu - everyone loads their game off FD servers. You could be buying something you don’t need.

If you use the base portal menu system it is / was prone to slow boot up, this is due to slow server connection and FD using an old set of codes, which sometimes don’t get overwritten.

Steam always has the most upto date launcher code, so ‘usually’ is quicker, but you are not playing off a Steam server, it’s just the base game off FD servers. You may already have the game, you might just need to update the base game to 4.0.

If anyone were a backer check the privileges, just in case, as a life time pass entitlement gives Odyssey for free etc. But ED have bundled things too, e.g Ed is now 4.0 so you’ll get this for free as part of your original purchase, it just needs an update.

4.0 is effectively the ‘Odyssey light’ version as standard - its basically the same game but none of the on foot FPS content - which FD gave away to temp people to buy the EDO upgrade. 4.0 has all the graphics and new game content but none of the foot content which will chew up RAM.

Make that decision first - do you want the on foot content or the core game. If so you don’t need to buy EDO, if you want the feet it’s an extra wedge.

Also once this season is over it’s highly likely FD will bundle EDO as a free ‘optional’ download. If you can wait an extra 12 months!

I use Steam, it’s a faster boot up - but effectively my old launcher is still there I can opt to use that if I wanted…I wanted to switch to steam as I learnt it was quicker - FD confirmed all this and pointed out where my key was - took seconds to load, but that’s all it is - a key… save your money.
