getting better perfs

Hi CMDRs,

just bought a rift, using 970 gtx SLI (since sli does not work with vr so it's just one 970) and i7 4790k@4.4ghz

i'm getting smooth graphics in asteroids field with medium settings, supersampling x1.00 and almost everything off

in station in need to put low and 0.85 supersampling to get smooth graphics but it looks worst than the dk2.

could i improve my performances ? for example my monitor (1440p 144hz g sync) is plugged on a display port and the rift on the hdmi of the same card.
while playing in vr my desktop is running with the game in window mode.

Can i turn off the monitor to get more efficiency in the rift ? or put the rift on the second card ?
surely there are some tricks to improve the performances but couldn't find anything recent.

(oh and i can't change my gpu at the moment, probably the best solution to solve the issue :) )

thanks cmdr o7

I found that alt tabbing, minimizing the oculus thing and game launcher got me a slight performance increase.

Running the game fullscreen might work too, but elite always starts in a small window in VR.

If you want it to look better you need a faster gpu and supersample. I just bought a vega 56 and went from 1.0 to 1.5 hmd resolution and it looks great, unfortunately games crash after an hour of play or so. If I can't solve it I'm going to have to return it, and return to 1.0 :(

I started with a GTX 970 and with experimenting around I could get decent performance and quality with careful selections of the graphics settings. I found a new GTX 1080 for $429 and the difference is amazing. Much better performance and views.

I would honestly recommend upgrading. SLI is never a good idea. When it works well, it's fine, but even then the scaling in different games can be really poor. When it doesn't work, well, it's not even a good paper weight...

so not disable SLI yet but

i was sitting in the station at 45fps everything at low
i changed ss/hmd both to 0.85 to have a decent frame rate.

i went to settings, and change the desktop resolution (the render on the monitor) to the lowest possible, and put back hmd/ss both to 1.00

i was running at 90fps with very little stutter and fps drops, exiting the station without any no issue

went to bounty hunt a bit in the roids and when i came back ... meep 45fps

next session i will try without sli

i don't know what triggered the 90fps

Stick with it mate, I'm sure you'll get there. It only has to drop below 90fps for ASW to kick in I think. Have you tried turning it off? I don't mind it myself.

so, i tried without SLI, ASW off, and pixel density (1.5 instead of 0 via the debug tool)

i set hmd/ss at 1.00 and everything look fine, smooth.

I don't know if i'm above 90fps but it's way better and no stutter
