Newcomer / Intro Getting in to GalNet

Hi all,

I have been playing for 50 plus hours now and am just on my way back from a deep space sightseeing tour.
Every time I log in, I see news articles from Galnet, which tell me stuff if I read them.

My question as a noob is...

What use are they? Are they functional, or are they just window dressing? For example, I am seeing an undercover report on Jokers deck. Is there something I can do with that information?
I have read some of the articles but I don't feel like there is really an "entry" for new players to get up to speed with what has been happening recently, or understanding what the reports mean and whether they affect gameplay.

Can anyone expand on this for me?

then there is something in-game. For the others, probably not, they are mostly fluff to make the galaxy more alive. (Exceptions are the 1st article, which is always powerplay, and sometimes the 2nd, which is attacked stations.)

There are various archives of articles, like https://community.elitedangerous.com/, but I wouldn't bother - just start reading them as they appear and you will pick up on what is happening. You can always ask if you want more details about stuff.

Thanks. It would be useful if there were some sort of catch up summary, so that articles like "corporate split between mastopolos and torval" actually mean something to a new player.

The codex has a bunch of background articles on the super powers, powerplay factions, some larger corporations and other topics (dark wheel/ raxxla) if you haven't seen those yet. But like I said its mostly background not much as far as current ongoing story lines.
