Getting to know the neighbours

I previously mentioned in another thread that I have recently relocated to a new home system. This little detour did highlight one thing - just how much I knew about the previous area. I knew which station sold Insulating Membranes, which station had the best price for Palladium, where I could safely sell Personal Weapons and the such. Now I had nothing so I decided to do something about it.

At my new (abet temporary) home I went to the Mission Board and noted every system that was listed there. Then a quick check on the GalMap to see if I had visited them or not. Those I hadn't, off I went in my scooter (umm Courier), a quick scan and off to the next one. First iteration had about 15 systems that I hadn't visited.

The only error I made was I forgot (okay, didn't know) that to use the Trade Tool via the station's Market you had to physically dock at least once in the system. Quick revisit and that was done. Bonus was finding some lovely looking stations along the way and with the quick look at the different markets, quickly building up a good picture of what is sold and bought around my new personal bubble.

I have repeated this little exercise each day when I start up. Naturally the list is getting smaller each time, for example today I had only two to check out (but did find a good source of Beryllium).

I know this is just a bit of waffling on my part but I find it much easier to run missions if I know who's who in the zoo so to speak. Just doing this simple exercise has already given me some valuable info that I might have missed.

I have done this a few times now, I have 5-6 bases of operations, although I spend the overwhelming majority of my time in a region I have been based in since early 2015 - I lucked into a really nice region.

Establishing sources, using the visited stars filter, I enjoy that. Almost makes me wish there was some sort of cooldown when information on a system would expire and local rep steadily revert back down (as it does with the superpower ranks, and as a hostile status goes back up to disliked).

One of the aspects I still miss from pre-2.1 is that my ranks (I'm triple Elite) weren't a factor on the lower end NPCs or missions spawning. Sometimes I'd like to see the game the way new players do - it's the best part of the game imo.

It's a very valuable advice.
Gathering information is key to successfully operate in a region. Knowing the neighborhood - as you said - is a good way to find profitable locations without having to rely on the "flavor of the month" gold rush or for avoiding (or seeking) trouble.

I've got my ships parked in a lovely little asteroid orbiting a lava world 8ls from the main star. The station comes with good ship selection, outfitting and interstellar factors and is only 2-3 jumps away from all the local engineers and the 3 different material traders.

Why plan when everything can be on the doorstep? ;)

Fair enough but probably not for me. I have the ships I want and if I decide to buy another one, I research and don't mind travelling to get it. Same with outfitting, guess that is why I have a fleet taxi (AspE if you are interested), otherwise I wouldn't have a use at all for the ship. As for the interstellar factors, that was one of the first things I found when I relocated, two are now bookmarked so they are only one click (and one jump) away. Since I never play in my home system, it works out perfectly.

I've been thinking about relocating my fleet but I still can't leave my initial home system Sol.
I know all the surrounding systems and have build a good rep in those systems.
I like to run missions and in my mini bubble I hop from one system to another with highly rewarding results.
I know where I can find a couple HazRes or Anarchy systems, I know which systems hold HGEs, etc.
Sometimes it's a bit boring, knowing exactly where what is but I just can't get to moving my fleet elsewhere and start over.

And it realy feels like coming back home and to the neighborhood when I return from an exploration trip.

I can sympathise 100%. This little side journey is only a temporary basis for me, I will be returning to my proper home station as soon as I complete the task I have set myself. Like you I know my home system inside out, I know where the good markets are, I have my little list of good HiRes I like, where my IF are, even which bodies have the raw mats I need nice and easy to pick up.

But it is a good exercise to perform, I am actually enjoying flying around getting to know what is where, I must be strange (maybe I should add this to my 'quirks' thread I started lol

My home is in Hecate. Near Terra mater, the permit locked system. It is an awesome system with a pretty earth sized ELW with the famous station Harrison XIII. You can buy the highly rare Live Hecate Sea Worms there which taste delicious when still fresh. I like to think that this planet and its neighbor Terra Mater (where the delicious Terra Mater Blood Bores originate from) are from the ABC warrior comics. Tho it is written Hekate and not Hecate.

That said I have not been home for a long long time. I should go visit my mom soon....

Update: Tried something a little different today. Brought across my Fleet Taxi - an AspE with a decent jump range, moderate weapons and speed but most of all, capable of carrying 32T of cargo.

Selected an unvisited system, flew there, did the scan, selected a station and docked there (thus opening up that market to me for future use). Then trolled thru the missions until I found one that was either a courier/data type or a delivery for under 32T but to somewhere I hadn't been to yet. Took the mission and off I went, repeating the exercise at each system visited.

Managed to visit 25 new (to me at least) systems, so that is 25 new markets I can use, in about 90 minutes.

Damn good way to get to know the neighbourhood huh :D
