Dunno if you have seen the new Gillette razor advert. When i 1st saw it i really did not like it.... but i could not put my finger on why.

i have no problem with the message in principle, (obviously i do not think men should assault women or stand there laughing whilst their kid knocks 10 bells out of another kid

My 1st problem is just think it is naff all to do with the product and, i dunno it just seems a bit cringing to me <shrugs>. I dont think a platform which is being used to sell something is the place to make the point...... Buy expensive Gillette razors and show the world you are not a misogynistic prat... or dont and you are condoning sexism and bullying......

but i think my main issue is it is building a massive strawman. I DONT think 99.9% of men are bullies or walk around groping woman and I DO think anyone who does needs reprimanding... and what is wrong with seeing a woman and going to talk to her. the impulse body spray adverts of a couple of years ago actively encouraged women to buy the product so that they may get the attention of men to talk to them.... its obviously a rubbish advert and body spray would not do that, but since when was talking to a lady you thought seemed nice a crime or something to stop.

and also, its so obvious as well... even the black guy who stops his white mate from talking to the lady... that colour demographic was no mistake either imo.

and incase you have no idea what i am on about.

so what do you reckon..... important advert bringing to light an issue that men really need to address of themselves or a poor taste marketing campaign trying to cash in on somethign which isnt even true 99% of the time?

but hey its ok, if i am a misogynistic pig I need not worry, i will buy some Gillette razor blades and all will be fine :)

The bigger question is, why give a damn about ads? They're made by people whose job it is to mentally abuse people into buying stuff they don't need and to get attention within the industry for their made-up awards. Ascribing any capacity for social or political discourse to those roughly human entities is not warranted.

this is strange to you?

There are lots of things i dont like but i am interested in discussion, even better if from opposing views, maybe i will change my mind.

To be honest where i am it seems to be common news, so i assumed most people will have seen it, or heard about it.

When it's an ad/campaign?
Yes, that is strange to me.

You are giving direct publicity to something you object to.
That is strange to me, indeed, when the whole object of that thing is to create publicity.

It reminds me of when people (mainly kids) smell something terrible.
They want you to smell it too!
What's up with that?

Many adds have nothing to do with the product in question.
Coca Cola sells a good feeling, success in life and happiness.
Many car brands sell freedom, and empty roads with nice sunsets etc..

I rarely watch adverts. I never watch programs that are interrupted by adverts.
I even blocked tv stations that constantly bother me with them during their shows and programs. To me that is unacceptable.
I have cable tv, but use only 12 channels, go figure.

I do not think I will ever encounter the Gillette advert you are talking about and I am not going to watch it voluntary :).

Shadowdancer has the gist of it.

What I don't like is Gillette falling in with the PC Brigades' culture-shaping agenda.

Telling folks what to do is a guarantee they'll kick against it in individualistic, basically libertarian societies, to wit, America!

I think....

well the thing is I dont object to them making the advert as such if they want to...... I disagree with it and i think it reflects poorly on them as a company and i think them essentially attacking men is poor form... but indeed i have a feeling this advert may backfire on them and actually put as many off their products as will make others actively choose them. As such i have no problem people seeing it (the truth is i believe adverts only really influence a small % of people either way).

I am not the kind of person who believes in hiding things i disagree with or even (for the most part - there are exceptions) find offensive. I just thought this was an interesting advert from an attitudes point of view. I strongly disagree with its message but then maybe it is not aimed at me, maybe i am so far out of touch that this is where we are now?. I am interested in talking about it, if you are not that is cool, there are other threads on this forum and this is the OT section :)

There's a saying:

"There's no such thing as bad publicity."

That's what you're giving them, so they accomplished their mission perfectly in your case.
You're "making it viral" right here and now.

You're not doing anything for social change by contrast, you're just driving clicks.
Don't fool yourself.

f.

yeah.... there is that saying and it is rubbish imo.. just ask Gerald Ratner. ;) (owned one of the most popular Jewelers in the UK who quickly went out of business after one of his talks went viral)

I wasnt looking for social change.... i was just interested in peoples thoughts about an advert.

And yet here you are, asking other people to click and view.
You even made a thread title with the company name.

Why spread the precise "virus" you find objectionable?
It's truly bizarre when you understand what the point is.
You're being a patsy.

:p

Can't remember the last time I properly laughed at an ad in so many places. Can't believe I've never seen it before.

They should do well off the back of this Gilette backlash.

I saw the Gilette one the other day based on some outraged article about it - wasn't really fussed about it either way tbh.

Its just another tv advert made by the same people who make up fake news to stir the populace into knee jerk actions/impulse purchasing. I been using the best a man can get fer nigh on 35 years so Im already sold on the product...no need to even watch the latest adverts or give them more than a second thought if Im already sold.

Its a distasteful advert by all accounts but its also a reflection of a pc world gone mad and therein lies the problem. The world is so pc now that even questioning their motivations is seen as you having issues...its a bit sad really. Twas my daughter who made an observation the other day while watching a movie about the black panther movement in the 60s/70s America...she asked how can they accuse the white folks of racism when they were quite clearly racist themselves?

Hypocrisy at its finest if a child can point out the obvious ^

I think that broadly misses the point.
Don't you think it's natural to hate your oppressors?
Hatred isn't bound by skin color.

I'm surprised at your take on it to be frank, given what you've shared here.

Marketing is essential establishing a brand personality and telling the consumer "what's in it for them".
It's the psychology of manipulation that has always preyed on the primordial social fear of being left behind because you aren't good enough.
The popularity contest. If you don't play you quickly feel the cold shoulder of most of the people.
It's not until you get older that you realize you didn't want to associate with those people anyway, let alone appease them.
Then you get a bit older still and realize that if you want certain things you have to impress certain gatekeepers.
So you either set your bar ever lower as you get older, you become bitter and spite the system or you cave and join the sheep.
It's extremely good business pitting men against women and aggravating the wounds of inequality with exaggeration and disregarding the backlash against the regular person just trying to make a living.
You're not good enough if you don't have a house, a car, a prestigious job, a bunch of physical characteristics deemed bare-minimum, infinite patience and complete submissiveness masked as dominance.
Never underestimate the power of image over reality and never give anyone the benefit of the doubt that they'll see through the mist.
People are so distracted they don't have the energy to be real anymore. They can only be real for special moments before they have to go back to being fake.
The number of mental problems is increasing not because of the pressure but because of the ever growing intolerance of anything outside the norm. The more they widen the sweet spot to accept "everybody" the more they look at you in horror if you don't fit in.
This isn't the world most of us want to be a part of but we're so poorly equipped to survive without modern comforts, let alone living off the land.
Atrophied addicts who'r so far from what's natural.
Take away the protection and many feelings become clear. There is no debate when facing the answer directly.
