I think that broadly misses the point.
Don't you think it's natural to hate your oppressors?
Hatred isn't bound by skin color.

I'm surprised at your take on it to be frank, given what you've shared here.

Of course I hate my oppressors but Im also a realist who realises that things aint gonna change. Ive been discriminated against a fair bit meself as a northern irish man in London in the early 90s...was beaten half to death in a cell once just because they didnt like my accent. I know exactly what its like to be discriminated against simply because of where I came from and that has absolutely nothing to do with colour.

The real irony being that here, I identify as a Loyalist who would fight and die to protect the Crown...more loyal than most English claim to be and yet they still saw me as the enemy.

Of course I hate my oppressors...what ye think I should do about it? Complaining doesnt work, neither does ranting and raving about it on social media which arguably just makes it worse anyway. Im as anti establishment as it gets but Im not a young hothead either who feels like they wanna change the world with a revolution. That requires too much energy that I simply dont have anymore.

I know better than most that hatred is not bound to skin colour...Ive lived through it fer 47 years and I still see it from those who claim to be crusaders against that very thing. Ye wanna hear the names that normal english people used to spit in yer face? Ye wanna see hatred up close and personal then ye really dont have to travel far to experience it.

But this, this is nothing more than modern capitalism...I saw more than enough corny stupid adverts in America where every program shows fer 5 minutes followed by ten minutes of adverts. Ye want condescending adverts then America is the place that shows the rest of the world how its done.

Its been cool knowing that their issues are mostly over there but this particular example doesnt exactly inspire me to think the future will get any better.

Apart from that I honestly dont know how Im expected to feel about it...was I supposed to be deeply offended? Why? Its not gonna make any difference just make me feel bad and Im being selfish by not caring that much?

I'm just asking you, and by extension your daughter*, to look beyond the racism in your previous example.
Sort of like sarcastically asking:
"Ok so they're racist, but what's your excuse?"

*Us older folks are probably a lost cause, right?
The youth however...
;)

so what do you reckon..... important advert bringing to light an issue that men really need to address of themselves or a poor taste marketing campaign trying to cash in on somethign which isnt even true 99% of the time?

it's both, dirty marketing and also a signal that the general discourse is changing.

"Hey we sell razor blades. Wouldn't it be good if people could stop being bawbags to each other?"

"Right, that's it! I'm never buying a Gillette product again! How dare they force their feminist, liberal agenda on me!"

Is that about it?

Well, I can test new product, just for fan. Why not. Once. It's like coloring hairs for women, or changing wallpaper on a phone. Something new. Just to check out maybe this product will be good indeed. And then return back to regular good things which checked by time and own experience.

ps: not really sure that ads motivate me a lot (well, exactly this one does not) to make me feel that I won't survive without this new product.

that is one interpretation i suppose. Mine was that it made out that average men were some form of Jim Davidson stereotype who like to molest women, and champion bullying..... but there is another way, buy Gillette razors and be a better man!.

The advert portrays that we are mostly some very negative stereotype which honestly i do not think I have EVER met anyone as bad as the blokes in that advert.

I would be interested to see what the response to the female equivalent of that advert would be if Gillette did a version for their new Venus razors :D

note for the record because it can be hard to portray tone in a message.. i am not angry or raging at all.... i am surprised they made the add but mostly just genuinely interested at the response to it

Really? As someone who grew up in the 60's/70s I can think of plenty!

Anyway - everyone knows real men don't use safety razors!

I use whatever comes to hand first, piece of broken glass, stanley knife or an angle grinder.

And I never moisturise - just a quick splash of Brut for men (obviously) and some surgical glue for any "issues"!

!

well indeed. i am a little younger than you - 43 on sunday - but thankfully attitudes have improved all on their own over the last 30 - 40 years. whilst i said i have never met anyone like the advert, it does i admit look like they took the cast from the average portrayed male in (the original) prisoner cell block H to base the advert on ;)

I like the advert with the cat and dog playing blues.
I have no idea what they are selling.

(about to torpedo my whole point here... I am just saying that before someone points it out to me ;) )

The adverts i like are the ones from 10 - 30 years ago. They are totally inappropriate but (to me) amusing. But i like them because even then they were clearly not taking themselves seriously, as well as looking back and realising how much attitudes have progressed.

for example fosters and carling black label, as well as XXXX adverts (basically mostly beer adverts with a few hamlet cigar ones thrown in)

I got some Kojak for you then.

Yeah - I guess things must have changed a lot - but I have virtually no experience of seeing 20 somethings interacting in their natural habitat amongst themselves so I have nothing first-hand to go on these days..

Dunno if you have seen the new Gillette razor advert. When i 1st saw it i really did not like it.... but i could not put my finger on why.

i have no problem with the message in principle, (obviously i do not think men should assault women or stand there laughing whilst their kid knocks 10 bells out of another kid

My 1st problem is just think it is naff all to do with the product and, i dunno it just seems a bit cringing to me <shrugs>. I dont think a platform which is being used to sell something is the place to make the point...... Buy expensive Gillette razors and show the world you are not a misogynistic prat... or dont and you are condoning sexism and bullying......

but i think my main issue is it is building a massive strawman. I DONT think 99.9% of men are bullies or walk around groping woman and I DO think anyone who does needs reprimanding... and what is wrong with seeing a woman and going to talk to her. the impulse body spray adverts of a couple of years ago actively encouraged women to buy the product so that they may get the attention of men to talk to them.... its obviously a rubbish advert and body spray would not do that, but since when was talking to a lady you thought seemed nice a crime or something to stop.

and also, its so obvious as well... even the black guy who stops his white mate from talking to the lady... that colour demographic was no mistake either imo.

and incase you have no idea what i am on about.

but hey its ok, if i am a misogynistic pig I need not worry, i will buy some Gillette razor blades and all will be fine :)

I can't see anything about razors and beards in this add, so nothing i consider buying

Everything this add shows is forgotten 2 seconds later. With this floodening of stuff in television and the world on general i don't pay any attention to such stuff except i was especially searching for it. And so i don't care what they show. I'll teach my kids anyway that this are all lies without any exception.

I don’t need an excuse, if I don’t like someone I’ll stand toe to toe with them and tell them exactly that to their face...the colour of their skins really isn’t a factor.

I’ve been accused of being racist many times in these forums...it’s cool we don’t have the brexit thread anymore in that regard.

I’m not even trying to counter that because I know I’m not so there’s nothing to defend against far as I’m concerned. That’s why I’m not offended and don’t really care...nothing to do with being older I felt the exact same way decades ago.

Other people spit hatred into my face I just laugh at them which makes them even madder in many cases. They like trolls they want a reaction not amusement so I troll them right back and then I’m accused of being the worst in the world...because standing yer ground is now seen as politically incorrect?

I’m surprised I’m not more apathetic I just find it utterly pointless ^

Right, so neither do they.
