Gimballed or Turret....Pulse or Burst?

Hi All,
What do you like to use out of Gimballed or Turret, Pulse or Burst lasers....reasons why you prefer?
Or dont you use any of these and use something else?

Thanks

It's really a matter of personal preference, balancing trade off of time on target; size of ship; dps / dpe. I tend to Gimballed beam personally, but am learning to use a fixed PA.

Hi,

I use gimballed on all my ships. I'm not that good with fixed. And i dont like the drop in DPS from turrets(i dont have the numbers but it felt a long time extra before shields dropped when using turrets).
I only use beams, but engineerd with efficient grade 5 and the powerdistributor i have grade 5 charge enhanced.
I like it bcs its really good DPS, all shields die quickly , it works really good for me. Enough secs of fire before my distributor dries up and then its full again , so for me its quickly dropping shields.
It works good for me on my python, cutter, corvette and asp. I don't really know about other ships.
I only do PVE though.
Maybe it helps a little bit ;-)

Personally, the only lasers I like are beams because the "trigger response" on pulse & burst lasers is absolutely terrible.
It's like firing a 34th century flintlock pistol; you pull the trigger and then have to wait for the shot to be fired.
The best thing about a laser is that it's instantaneous so having to wait for the shot to be fired defeats the purpose of it.

I usually fit fixed beams as dogfighting weapons but I'm also partial to turrets.
It's kind of fun to build a hull-tank ship, have one manually-fired weapon for "target designation" and then just allow a bunch of turreted cannons and lasers to do their thing while you concentrate on avoiding incoming fire.
Just a shame that FDev saw fit to penalise turrets twice; once by making them vastly more expensive than manual weapons (which makes perfect sense) and then also by making them less powerful than similar manual weapons (which makes absolutely NO sense at all).

Whats difference with Turrets and Gimballed?

Turrets can be completely autonomous whereas gimbals just target-track within a limited area, while you're pulling the trigger.

Also, turreted weapons are nerfed even more than gimballed weapons - which, in turn, are nerfed in comparison to fixed weapons.
All of which is very silly.

Turrets auto-lock on targets irrespective of your view. So you could have, say, a Viper directly below you, but if you have a turret on the underside of your ship, it will fire on the Viper even though you can't see it.

Gimballed weapons have a "soft-lock" on your targets, you have to pointing in their general direction for them to lock-on and hit the target.

*Damage Per Second aka dps: Fixed > Gimballed > Turret

Cost: Turret > Gimballed > Fixed

and other benefits as noted in previous posts

*DPS - is affected by time on target - how long can you keep the weapon pointing at the target and scoring hits - Turrets auto Aim relatively unaffected by ship attitude - Fixed requires you to point the ship - Gimballed in the middle - Your flying affects DPS with the weopon of choice.

I dislike turrets.
They eat more power and the damage is bad.
They work well to distract the enemy while moving if your ship is slow to turn.

Gimbals are better. But require you have the nose of your ship aiming at the target. They do more damage and the energy cost is acceptable. Chaff make a mess of them.

Fixed are better in damage and energy consumption, but require some practice and admittedly in a big slow ship can be troublesome to aim and to keep a decent time to target.

In the end is a matter of preference, no choice is "bad" or "wrong", find what works for you and go.

Depends what I'm flying. Turrets are good for ships that are multi-crew capable, or large and unwieldy.

Gimbals are good on most ships.

When it comes to lasers, I'm a beam fan, followed by burst.

Beams are better in turret or gimbal varieties.

Burst are good fixed.

But I'm mostly a fan of Plasma Accelerators which are only fixed.

turrets are mainly useful on ships that are slow to maneuver, so you have some sort of damage going out while you maneuver your slow butt to get a firing solution.

I'd also only recommend them on ships that have alot of hard points, and even then you have to pay attention to hard point placement to see what their fields of fire are.

Reasons to use turrets:
-multicrew
-you fly a brick, want to fight for RP reasons, but don't want to learn how to fly

Reasons to not use turrets:
-turrets suck
-yeah, they really suck. Rubbish DPS. Rubbish tracking. List goes on.

Go gimballed and use either pulse or burst depending on how easy you want to be on the distributor, or avoid burst on a ship that runs hot.

Turrets are handy as secondary weapons on ships large enough to make fighting very small ships annoying. Gimbals or fixed are the way to go for small or medium ships, and at least for the main weapons on large ships.

When it comes to lasers, I prefer beams to pulses and bursts. The extra damage and falloff range isn't really worth the downsides, but I find them more satisfying to use, and being able to put regen on them is nice for winging up.

As a pirate my IClipper is fitted only with turrets. The idea is to keep the target busy whithout blowing it up while i steal the cargo. I can just fire the turrets while i scoop the cargo

Only ship I have ever used turrets on is my Corvette, (had burst on the smaller hardpoints, trying pulses ATM), but use gimbaled beams up top. i use gimbaled beams and fixed PAs on my Python.

Depends on the ship and intended use I guess.
