Gimballed users... I surrender...

I've managed to kill 2 Anacondas with 2 Medium Gimballed Multi-Cannons (MGMCs) by targeting their power plants (with help). I now see their use and repent of (most) my Fixed sins. I still have 2 Small Fixed Beam Cannons for DPS.

It's good to have some fixed weapons too, in case the enemy deploys chaff. Makes gimbaled weapons pretty much useless for the duration.

I was engaged with a ship the other night that used so much chaff I kept losing target lock on him. I'd have to reaquire the target and then make sure it was the right one so I didn't do the friendly fire thing.

I ended up getting 38Kcr but it was a long, embarrasssing fight. I was in a Viper with 4 gimballed AC's. I was concerned about running out of ammo. After that fight I put a couple fixed Pulse lasers in the low spots.

You call that embarrassing? Me and an Anaconda were engaged with an another Conda that took me 60km from the Resource Extraction Point in Rakapila. My "buddy" would fire only if his shields were down leaving me with the job of removing Hull. I so wanted to slap that pilot. I'm in a VIPER and a poorly kitted Viper at that!

If you're not locked, you don't have you lead indicator though. Still makes aiming trickier.

Not with a laser - at least not in my case w/ a beam laser. And as I've set my projectile weapons to "trailing", my MCs fire right where my laser shoots. What you DO lose is (1) distance to target, (2) status - shield/hull strength of target and (3) ability to see when the chaff "expires". So it's certainly not perfect, but better than not firing at all.

Nah - just remove target lock from the chaff user and a gimbaled weapon functions as a fixed weapon.

It is still good to have fixed regardless (especially on smaller ships) because:

1. Fixed versions are stronger
2. Fixed beam lasers DON'T dance around like they are a contestant in Dancing with the Stars

You can avoid (or at least greatly minimize number 2) with upgraded sensors. But yes, fixed weapons do either 20 or 25 percent more damage - I don't remember the exact stat. But in a dogfight I know what I'd use!

Not enough to justify using them over gimballs.

And where did you get this stat? did someone run the numbers like a couple of commanders have on the shields lately?

For dogfighters fixed is still way better and more than enough to justify using Fixed. Try flying a decked out Eagle or Viper, fixed beam is so deadly accurate that using gimbal will only be determetial rather than helpful.

3 fixed beams on an Eagle evoporates another Sidey/Eagle easily in less than 10 secs, provide that you can aim.

Alright, I agree with that.

So, in the end, gimballed shine when you target components of a larger vessel while fixed fry the small ones. Opposite of what I expected before trying. Isn't it ironic... don't you think... It's like rain on your wedding day, it's a free ride when you've already paid (Pardon, drifting off)

No - that was straight from a Frontier dev in late beta / early gamma. It was posted on this forum.

From my combat experience thus far with my Fixed weapon outfittings and my hybrid Fixed/Gimballed loadout, My fights are FAR shorter with the hybrid loadout. All I have to do is keep the 2 SFBLs (Small Fixed Beam Lasers) on target and my Medium Gimballed Multi-cannons rain kinetic death. Rinse, repeat, collect paycheck.

With the revelation that 4-pip to shield = 2.5x stronger shield (vs. 1.08x on 2 pips & 1.37x on 3 pips) I pretty much gave up on beams for a full MC setup (so I can use 4-0-2 and still dish out the damage). Since I only hunt big game NPC, I only attack FSD for maximum efficiency (and to prevent them from running). MC does its component targeting best if they are gimballed, so every ship in my fleet is rocking gimballed MC. Works great for me...

I go gimballed all the way with c2 pulse and c1 multis, you can manage much longer sessions than with the large multis. But I hardly ever fly straight enough to use fixed anyway :p
