Give a chance for little people

The game is primarily the game you want it to be, and for some players that is a _pure_ PVP game.

ok fair point, and if players want to play it as a PURE PvP game that is fine, but ultimately the DEVS have stated that the PvP content is a small part of the game. IF players just want to engage in that part only, that is ok, but it is unfair to expect the game to balance its entire content based around it.

Star Conflict is a space pure PvP game with much better balance (I am not telling the OP to stuff off and play that, I am just saying there ARE balanced PvP space shooters out there, elite just isnt one, and i hope personally it never is.).

For me part of the thing i loved about Frontier and 1st enc was saving up for the better gear and better ships.... and indeed this whole sidegrade stuff we get in most game where MP plays a large part takes a HUGE amount of incentive away to keep getting new stuff.....But I admit i am biased as well, as competitive MP has zero interest to me in elite.

Elite is NOT primarily a PvP game, it is a small part of it. As such the ships do not need to be balanced like in an Esport type game. Elite is trying to be a believable spaceman game in the future, and the reality of it is, much like now, if you have the money you can get objectively better gear.

ie a ferrari is better in every respect compared to a mazda MX5, and yet they are essentially the same kind of car (2 seater sports).

That being said.............. going forward I do hope all ships are kept relavent. This could be possible by some missions supplying the ships you need to do it in, or "under cover" missions where we spec a certain way, or simply just some ships having a "blend in" factor. ie if I was trying to keep a low profile in the real world as a getaway car, I would be more likely to use said cheap mx5 rather than a yellow ferrari even if it is the better vehicle!.

All that being said of course, some ships will always fill specific roles better than others, and this may become even more apparent in the future. (some what possibly overoptimistic comments coming)

but for instance the Eagle could well be a superior atmospheric fighter once we can go down to planets - just going on looks.
the moray star boat (if it comes) is a submersible vehicle
Small or big is still a part of the game, if you dont want a PvP you can choose "solo play". Your comparsion to a Mx-5 and Ferrari its good, but i think its compare to a naval or air technic is better. My point is if lets say BF-109 cannot breake tru a b-17 shields it has no chance for production there. Im not saying that sidewinder should destroy a anaconda or phyton, but still a gap between this ships are huge.

It's worth while taking on big targets as I believe (no proof) that the size/rating disparity between target and attacker decides the amount it counts towards your elite rating.

The trick to big game hunting is to get behind his engines where his forward guns/turrets can't hit you and slip out on maneuvering thrusters to fire at his power-plant, or take out his engines from the same position and finish him whilst he tumbles out of control. Watch out for reverse thrust though, a facefull of anaconda could ruin an otherwise damn fine plan.

I never said I was not interested in multiplayer ;) Co-op play was hugely pushed as being the lions share of the multiplayer in elite, and I am really excited about this. I do play games like warthunder and BF4, but for me the multiplayer games I really enjoy are co-op games like borderlands, L4D & Payday 2 so when I heard DB explaining how Elite would encourage co-op play, and that the game mechanics would discourage PvP outside of certain scenarios, whilst still keeping it possible for those who really want to do it, I was super interested!..

also, whilst it is true solo is good for those who do not want ANY interaction with other players, if FD were to balance ALL ships to be sidegrades from each other, that would affect all game modes not just open.

still, interesting points, and better than the "little people" arguments in this thread :)

Cheap ships CAN take down the biggest ships in the game.... but they need to adapt, and that is as it should be imo. if all you have are cheap 40k ships then you need to wing up and swarm attack the big game imo.

Best option when facing an overwhelming force is to run, hide or try to negotiate. The last option is to fight to the death. Sometimes your ship will be mass locked anyway so the only option you have is to negotiate or fight to the death. Its a dangerous universe out there and the Sidewinder aint worth much, only if you have lots of them. Then they can be a treat. Its a starter ship or a poor mans ship. But you can always try to be Elite in a Sidewinder to for the challenge and fun of it.

Just to add something. If ships like Sidewinders and the like should ever become as powerful as a Viper or Cobra. We need to have the option to modify the ships with better modules and weapons. The same ways as you customize a car with better engines/tires.
It would be a fun option though. But if its likely to happen its hard to say.

And what part is not a small part of the game?

There is no "big part" in Elite. Just a bunch of small parts that, as a whole, form this big game that is Elite. That's why I would find it silly to balance the game around only one of those parts.

But that's just my opinion.

If you can give me a good reason why a players starter sidewinder wih little rebuy should be able to go toe to toe with another players anaconda with a multi million rebuy cost, I'll be surprised and impressed.

PVP is better if theres an element of building up a ship and risk of loss imho.

But no one asked for that.

cobra is a fine ship, you can win against a python. bigger ist not alway better, didnt your girlfriend told you that? ^^

If you can balance things on your small parts, you should be making too much Youtube monies to bother with playing Elite! :p

I don't think starting players should have much of a chance to kill other players in way larger and expensive ships. If you've got the skill to PvP a player Python or Anaconda in your sidewinder or eagle, then go ahead but it will be extremely difficult considering it takes about 2-3 class 3 laser shots to down your shields. I can see it being possible for sure, if you manage to stay behind the conda but any half decent build is going to have so much shield strength you're probably just tickling it at best. There has to be some kind of progression in the game, which means more money -> bigger ship -> better combat generally speaking.

Sorry for mistakes.. English is not the language i know best. Ok now back to thread. I have some expirience in games like IL-2 series "war thunder" i like a dogfights in this games. Dogfight in elite 2 sidewinders with fixed weapons is great fun to, but later when you progress in game ... its just to big diffrence, gap between ships, to much magic like "shield cells" and "boost button". I never sed that sidewinder should have a chance against Anaconda.

and how balancing one part like dogfights in elite can affect other parts?

Ahahaha.

"Big is better" reminded me this:

I'm anaconda bigger and more intelligent than you and my fists are itching. This is my right to control you. I'm one of those who always win. I'm belonging to 20% of the best and you are belonging to 80%. I'm take all the benefits, you take all the efforts.

I noticed the thread title is different now. Why?

po·lit·i·cal cor·rect·ness
noun

  • the avoidance, often considered as taken to extremes, of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against.
