Going Surround - Seeking Sound Advice

Hi,

If you adjust things in the Realtek software, room correction and all the rest will be the same in all of your games. Inside the games, it is just a question, if they support 5.1/7.1, but they usually do, so no further corrections needed :).

I haven't found a description specially for gaming rigs yet, I tried to write down my experiences in my thread "Uncle Brigetiol's...". I think, gaming-rig-audio is closer to car-audio installations then home cinema, if you are looking for descriptions.

for placing the speakers, since the z906 is THX certified, this would be the ideal:

But for that, you should build a dedicated room, so here is when "room correction" comes in picture. Installing and positioning speakers is always a game "as close to ideal as possible". Speakers should be always directed to your ears, like flashlights, especially if they are above/under ear level. Try at least to put the front left-right speakers in ear level. Then using room correction. Measure the distances of the speakers to your ears (like you already did). Adjust the parameters in the Realtek software. First I run the auto test at speaker configuration, to adjust the volumes for the speakers. You can use a microphone and any software, that can show the recorded volume, or a sound level meter, or just by listening. If the sound levels from different channels seem to be equalized, you can check, if the distances are correctly adjusted. I prefer to enable speaker fill (to use all channels for stereo input), start some simple electronic music, and if the high-hats are not echoing, adjustment is right.

Basically, that is it. It is useful to make some pauses for your ears, because after a while, your brain gets used to the actual situation, and it is hard to sense the differences.

Then, if all things look good with the tests, start playing Elite, try first the Full range/Normal speaker adjustment inside the game. You can make additional adjustment with the channel volume levels, or inside the game's audio menu, to weaken speech volume, increase effects volume for your taste.

Best regards!

Once my setup was reasonably close to optimum... And the volume was set to ~50%. Wow. Blimey! I love it.

Teething problems:
  • I had accidently turned the bass channel down to 1/10th
  • I insisted on using 7.1 so I could access the rear speakers in the control panel
  • I needed to swap speaker stands to make the 'side' speakers portable so I could position them correctly

Negatives
  • Positional sound (above and below) not as good as headphones using Elite's DTS(?) tech.
  • The high pitch menu select sounds aren't anywhere near as pronounced as the headphones.

Positives and highlights
  • So much better audio compared to my Hyper X headphones, which are better than the CV1's headphones!
  • Cracking positional audio e.g. ship flybys. True, the above and below not as clear as headphones but close!
  • The raw of the engines
  • Combat is amazing
  • It really puts you in the ship.
  • Strangly the sense of presence feels better - like it has been turned up to 11.

Very pleased with the purchase :)

Hi,

I'm happy you are satisfied with the z906!

Just noticed the quote, one of my favourites :). For long time I was thinking it is from Francis of Assisi, but now I realized, it is Reinhold Niebuhr's. Slowly I'll learn to double and triple-check everything on the internet :)! Anyway, one of the greatest wisdoms I've ever met.

Best regards!

Will the rear satellite speakers (plus bass) be man enough to produce decent engine sounds?

Will elite's audio software emulate sounds coming from above, e.g. my Hyper Xs, when firing the top mounted guns in the SRV, sound like they're above me...
Will they ever!.. I played ED for quite a while with my audio improperly configured and when I finally set it up I was blown away. the Z906 is on par with the klipsch pro media 5.1 set and should deliver what you've been missing. You'll want an uncompressed feed from your video card (not mobo) to your receiver via HDMI/Displayport. Do not use dolby,5.1(simulated) or DTS settings on your receiver, just run it straight and enjoy. discovery honks will never be the same. feel free to pm if you run into trouble.

Awesome!

I can rep you any more so have some Virtual! I PMed

Basically asking for advice on how to get the sound from my graphics card 1070 to the z906. Any amazon links would be gratefully received!

Sounds great! Headphones have difficulty with sounds behind you - no such problem with a 5.1 speaker set up. Enjoy!

If you buy entry level PC audiphile DAC + good headphones then you will hear surround in games ( like senheisser HD600 , HD800 , Bayerdynamic dt990) or DTS headphones. Belive me sound quality will be a miles ahead of any logitech 5.1 speakers conected to internal soundcard
I had this dac 2 years ago http://audiotrack.co.kr/en/external/253 and can recommend it for music and games.

Polk audio TSX series and a bargain priced yamaha receiver will deliver phenomenal sound in a small to medium sized room. you don't need positional audio if you're in the middle of the sound field.

I think Torden is referring to positional audio in room-scale VR games where, when you rotate your body, the sound field moves with you. Try it with From Other Suns, Lone Echo, or Arizona Sunshine, a 5.1 system won't do the trick.
