Golden Oldie Reflections

If I can do it – so can you – I am 79 years (ex Fighter Pilot & Fighter Combat Instructor) and have been playing games since the release of PC DOS 2 in 1983. Loved all the Space Games; especially Freespace 2 and all the X Series.

Now playing ED 1.03 (Win 7 64bit) – Using VoiceAttack, Saitek X52, Thrustmaster HOTAS X, and Xpadder and awaiting release of Squadron 42 in StarCitizen.

Method of Approach
Read - the Manuals, read as much of the Forums as possible & follow up daily, save to hard drive lots of Youtube Videos to review from time to time.
Forums – there are a lot of very skilled people ready willing and able to help you. I have found out over many years that without their input I could not have solved a problem.

Time – In the real world in my time it took about 2 years of Fighter Training to become skilled in order to be successful in you first mission and return back to base. Space Games
can also take a long time to master whatever path you choose.

Skill Level – the total field is very large; do not become disappointed if you feel you are not making the grade. There will always be somebody better than you. As someone said :”The journey is the reward”.

My thoughts on Elite Dangerous
Pros – Fun to learn and multiple ways to play.

Cons – NOT having the ability to SAVE Multiple “Save Games” - to my mind this is a very Major Issue and will loose a lot of players, including me. As you are aware, having invested a lot of time and effort to be told to go back to Square 1 at some point – SORRY – NOT REALLY.

I found that landing at SOME Outstations facing the the allocated Pad Number , eg 02
was incorrect and doing a 180 deg facing the spinning radars corrected this.

To my mind anyone having mastered the technique of landing should be given the Option of “Instant Docking” - as in essence Docking is such a minor part of the overall scheme.

I am also of the opinion that providing a very small Letterbox entry to a space station is not a good idea. It is a type of “Choke Point” that may force Pilots to have collisions with other craft. As in real life (and x3) docking at a space station is done externally.

Initial learning curve is difficult, but Hey I already have $13,000. Wow!

welcome :)

to the savegame problem: you will get more and more money per hour of playtime while progressing - just think of every insurance cost as 1 savegame :D - after a time you will have enough money to crash several times - just remember that when upgrading or buying a new ship the insurance cost will rise

for a nice cobra you should have about 4 million cr and the best way to get there is bounty hunting in a eagle then viper or trading rare goods with an adder/hauler and then normal trading with a lakon 6 (dont put too much money into those trading vessels when you want to focus on combat - they are just a tool...)

you can have more than one ship so maybe do some trading with one and then go for combat with another if you get bored...

Much respect and +rep to you Sir!

I take my hat off to you sir.

I hope, to god, you had the honour to fly with this man, or men like him. I am sure that you did. I listened to an interview with him, on Radio 4, a month or so ago, and I was, and remain, in awe.

And I am in tears as I type this.

It's thanks to people like you that people like me get to play games like this.

I would be beyond honoured to fly by your side. Wherever you are, solo, group, open, I will fly from across the galaxy, just to be in the same instance as you.

Hi anikaiful,
A bit off subject, however:
“Isn't that black thing in front kinda obscuring the view in a serious manner? “

No, not at all. The pilots forward view is through the gunsight and the nose is lower and
therefor out of the line of sight. The F 86 Sabre was the last of its kind being a Day Fighter
only. It provided excellent all round visibility with the Pilot sitting high on the airframe.
The Kill ratio in the Korean War was about 10 to 1 possibly less than that in the Vietnam War.
