Newcomer / Intro Good guys or bad guys?

Uh the Federation are the politically correct guys, they have rules and everyone should follow those, they are the "good"guys, they hate the Empire
The Empire are the "bad" guys, it's all about wealth, they like slavery, and everything that's opposite of the Federation, and they hate the Federation.
It's quit hard to get the Empire since they are at the bottom of the galaxy map and it takes a long time to get to Empire controlled space.
In the end it's all about what you prefer.
You can check the ED website to read more about the Feds, Empire and the Alliance.

You are welcome, I recommend you to check out the info on the ED website, it's fun to know what they are all about. I'm a fed, but I'm starting to think that the Empire is the better place purely because the are milder with all the rules and crimes etc.

I had a look and the more "good" one seems to be the Alliance. Plus I like Star Trek and it seems familiar. Lol. How do I go about joining the Alliance?

I have to disagree. The official website says that the Federation only seems to be built on democratic principles. In reality commerce and corruption determines the Federation. And I wouldn't say that the Empire are "the bad guys" too. It's just another form of society. But I agree that there are questionable things going on in the Empire - as in the Federation. The only "good guys" in my opinion is the Alliance.

Yeah there is somethhing to say about all of them, the Feds can be seen as bad, it depends on your point of view and how you morally think, I personally think that the Empire are bad but not bad in the way that they like to kill everyone and conquer the galaxy, and no their leader doesn't have breathing problems and doesn't wear a black cape.
It works the same as the Empire or the Feds, do missions for them and do missions for the smaller factions that are ruling certain systems and are allied with the faction you want to join. The Alliance are scattered everywhere, that's why they are a little bit harder to find and work for the only thing is that they don't have a military rank system.

Yeah it depends on your personal view, that's why I used " when writing bad and good.

Do you know of any systems that are controlled by the Alliance? I am a Fed now, but would like to go to the Alliance. Is there still somewhat of a "concentration" of systems that belongs to the Alliance?

I'm not into the Alliance so I'm not really sure, you can check it out in the galaxy map and choose to show only the Alliance ruled systems by filtering.

What is the difference between the Federation and the Imperials? Which is easier and better to side with?

Federation: Space America.
Empire: Space Ancient Rome.
Alliance: Er, maybe Space Canada or something?

There's a cluster of Alliance worlds around Lave (the starting world in the 1984 original).

Haha space Canada, nice have some rep mate. I think it's more space Switzerland.

After numerous run-ins with the (killjoy) Feds I have come to the conclusion that the Feds are the Social Justice Warriors of the Universe and the Empire are pretty much like the Roman Empire.

The alliance are like the U.N or something....

Is there a high level view of where these major political forces are centered?

The galaxy is big. More maps = better

The way I see it:

Federation: Space America.
Greedy corporate types with dubious ethics regarding expansionism, bent on galactic domination

Empire: Space Ancient Rome.
Stuck-up Emperor's lickspittles with dubious ethics regarding slavery, bent on galactic domination

Alliance: Space Brussels
Lilly-livered types with dubious ethics regarding expenses, bent on sitting around talking rather than solving a problem.

The Alliance is the least worse of the bunch, but I can understand why some people would rather remain independent.
