Good ship to do Odyssey Content in?

Hello,

Just picked up Odyssey and was wondering what a good ship would be to do Odyssey content in would be? I want to do combat ground missions so I am thinking something small/medium. I have a good SLF pilot but I am not sure if that is something I need to think about when doing planetary assaults.

What ever this ship is I would like to think of it as the ship I would do all/most Odyssey ground based things in. I don't mind cost/engineering just want something that will be fun to fly do ok in a fight. Any suggestions?

I do most of my EDO shenanigans in an unarmed DBX with a double SRV bay. It's fast, agile and fun and I've engineered it to have a good jump distance.

The general consensus is, just as you have guessed, to use a small/medium ship.
For any non combat related stuff I use a Hauler, while I use a Cobra (with dumbfire missiles and other fixed weapons) when combat is involved.

Plenty of settlements with small landing pads, so a small ship is a pretty straightforward choice. I've been switching between a Dolphin (jump range) and a Courier (plenty of shields and potential to mount three class 2 missile racks).

Large ships are not that great when dealing with planet stuff. Maybe the Type-7 and Imperial Clipper, but only because they have weird dimensions that make them barely too big for a medium pad.

Needless to say, a large ship has far less places to land.

Mediums and smalls, not so much. These boats can land in a much larger variety of spaces.

One ship to use over any others? Hmm. I would be of a mind to say that the Krait Mk II is your best bet, simply for the fact that it is the posterchild of versatility in this game.

While it might be far off anything rational (and besides not a small/medium ship), I think the Type 10 finally found its place in Odyssey. It has an ok-ish jump range, space for a big srv-hangar, an slf and some cargo, runs cool and - as far as pve goes - will shrug of the occasional interdiction. Nothing you won't get in another ship, but what really sets it apart are the numerous hardpoints. This allows for a loadout incorporating some flechettes/dumbfires/mines for attacking ground targets while still retaining sufficient firepower (and space for cell banks) to do some light to medium combat. As a bonus, the fact that it handles like a beached whale (and a fat one at that) makes planetary landings really interesting. Its just a special feeling to have this monstrosity crashing towards the surface. So, if you do not mind the search for a parking spot, maybe you give it a go.

Sidewinder, Viper IV and Imperial Courier are three ships that lend themselves well to EDO content. Personally I prefer a Viper IV, simply because the landing gear deploys quickly, the exit is at the front and it can withstand several minutes weapons fire from a reinforcement drop. Oh, and it can land near anywhere, especially useful for exobiology endeavours high up in the mountains.

Cobra III, Imperial Eagle, Imperia Courier or Vulture I have kitted out and use. Not tried the viper, but these are all ships that suit Odyssey ground missions.

Potentially the Cobra is slightly on top for the longer jump range, but the ships are cheap enough that you can try a few of them out. Did I mention that the rebuy is low?

I've been using the DBX since the beginning, but after testing the cheftain, it seems to be really nice, i've added long range plasma and railgun (tested both) to shoot those pesky turrets and dumbfire missiles just in case and a class 4 double SRV bay, and it's much better, but DBX has 75 ly range compared to the "weak" 33 ly for the cheftain.

globally if you just want to land and play on foot any ship will do, the higher range the better, but if you want to do a little fight, agility is what you look for to avoid gravity hindrance. As @SteveWW57 said above eagle or any Manœuvrable ship, as long as you keep it armed should be fine with your fav weapons :)

Some EDO settlements do not have medium or large pads but this do not stop you to park 155m Anaconda next to the settlement. In matter of fact it is hilarious.

Anyway, my suggestion @Aladine, a small ship like Cobra mk3 or Viper mk4.

Apex

Seriously, you'd have an easier time with Odyssey missions in an Apex.
Sure you'd need a ship for Missions that require your own ship.

So, for the Ship, my personal preference is going toward a ship that satisfies the following conditions (not necessarily in this order):

  • small ship - some settlements have only small pads, and not at last small hangars means less running distance
  • range - while missions are within 20ly, a ship able to cross the bubble is always better
  • solid shields - things always can turn south, so shield as stronger as possible
  • decent weaponry - preferably 2 Advanced missile launchers (Odyssey inhabitants are known to promptly faint when these explodes in their vicinity) plus whatever else weapons
  • size 4 internals - to be able to fit a size 4 SRV. It's recommended to have a spare
  • a back exit - hangars have either a back exit or a left side exit. Using a ship with a back exit considerably shortens the hangar run to and from elevators

There is one possible candidate that is able to fulfill all the requirements to the Max... A Diamondback Explorer

SO here is my EDO DBX : 48 ly jump range, 335 ly total, 1348 MJ shields, 2x AMR and 1 large beam (this setup works decently well in ground attacks and vs ships too), size 4 Srv Hangar and all the amenities for a easy ride (SCA, ADC, DSS)

I guess I am confused - Do you need a small ship to land in some places or can you use a medium? Not played much yet.
You do not really have to worry about landing pad size most of the time, as you will more often than not be landing away from the settlement and driving or walking in. Some settlements are placed in bad terrain, and a small ship comes in handy for those small landing places between the bits of bad terrain.

You can land at a pad of the site that you are going to attack (unless the occupants are tipped off), drive out, dismiss the ship and then attack. Even when the base is cleared, it will still register as hostile and you ship will find a landing spot a distance away. Might be a good one, might not be.

If the based is occupied by scavengers, that is where you can have fun. Use the pad, drive off, dismiss the ship as quick as you can, and you will not take much damage. That is a hot LZ and I have done a number of them.
