Good ship to do Odyssey Content in?

I guess I am confused - Do you need a small ship to land in some places or can you use a medium? Not played much yet.
Yes, you do. Settlement sizes vary and so do the landing pads. Anyway, like Northpin said (and I forgot to mention) Apex is king in Odyssey. You can do almost all the on-foot missions in them (bar the missions that generate planetary points of interest, like Larceny missions). Additionally, even if you have bounties and/or notoriety, you will of course never be interdicted. Last but not least, assassination targets never flee.

SO here is my EDO DBX : 48 ly jump range, 335 ly total, 1348 MJ shields, 2x AMR and 1 large beam (this setup works decently well in ground attacks and vs ships too), size 4 Srv Hangar and all the amenities for a easy ride (SCA, ADC, DSS)
Really appreciate this, I've been playing around with the other ships and trying to get them close to this build and you just cant without sacrificing something else. I am going to give this a try thanks again for all the help and suggestions everyone!!

Dolphin has an impressive amount of optional internals compared to the other small ships (5/4/4/3/2/2/2/1/1) and is the only one with a size 5. It'll also do around 50 LY or more even if you A-rate most of it, it's mostly limited by the class 1 weapon hardpoints and the fairly weak shields and armour.

The Imperial Courier has less jump range, but will last a bit longer if you have it take fire. I don't really use dumb missiles anymore, so my current loadout is mostly built around my habit to want to keep the heat levels a bit lower (just some exploration twitch I got). If you overcharge the PP instead, you can fit some missile racks and such.

P.S. I forgot that I needed to use an Engine Focused PD for unlimited boost, it just about doesn't make it with Charge Enhanced.

Vulture can get more shields, but crap range/autonomy and the weapon layout is lacking for ground attack

iCourier can also get more shields, but also crap range/autonomy, no size 4 Srv Hangar and less armed than DBX

Viper Mk4, less shields than DBX, average range (i was contemplating the ides to use a Viper Mk4, but i couldnt be arxed to change ships and transfer when wandering the bubble in the search for systems with states i want or when visiting Edo engineers and the likes)

In the end, there is no truly bad choice, but none of the ships (except DBX) manage to tick all my boxes :)

Amateurs, all of you.

The best Odyssey ship is obviously the Diamondback Scout.

It has everything you need for planetary operations:
  • Jump range over 45LY, meaning you can jump directly between almost any system within the mission generation box
  • Fuel scoop (not that you'll ever actually need it for purely Odyssey puttering about; it can be replaced with cargo if need be).
  • SRV bay.
  • Speed - it's one of the fastest general fits in my fleet.
  • Great heat management.
  • Tiny footprint - will land anywhere.
  • Chrome skin - it looks amazing.

I use the free iCourier as people mentioned, for multicrew I plan on using a challenger I have decked out with 2 SRV bays loaded with scorpions, dumbfire missiles and 2 packhounds (didn't realize they were not dumbfireable - imagine blasting a settlement with those bad boys). Kept em for targetables

My goto Ship, for bubble stuff since it appeared is an Engineered Krait MK2, good jump range, cargo space, fast & agile......particularly for me, who doesn't do the Ship pewpew stuff:).
It's used all the time now that Odyssey dropped, adjusted to having 3 Dumbfire Launchers & a couple of SRV/Scorpion hangers.........y'know, for pest control ;).
No need to bother with landing on Settlement pads, just land nearby & get there on foot or drive:cool:

I use a Federal Dropship. 8 SRVs. 5 missile launchers. Useful for just about any sort of mission. Plus tanky as hell so when things go south (for example, scavengers land while i'm inside a base) it can take a pounding while sat there and give me time to return. Only 20LY+ jump range, but since most Odyssey missions are within that distance its not an issue.

Hi folks. I bought a Diamondback Explorer and outfitted like Northpin said as far as I could. With deployed utilities (beam laser) Im in the red. I sold the missile racks but still in the red -0.67 MW. The power plant is engineered grade 1 overcharged power plant.

Please help.

For Odyssey content you'll most likely want a small ship or you may find yourself lacking landing pads and having to find terrain to land manually - meaning walking/running for a bit.

You could also consider not using a ship and just taking APEX taxis. You lose the ability to take space missions, but if your focus is a play session on the ground that's fine.

Maybe give an Enhanced Low Power Shield a go?

Been using the Phantom with a double SRV bay. I don't typically land on the pads for shenanigans and such.

Sometimes I will use my DBX/S, but for the most part, the Phantom is my general mission runner.

Any chance you could post the build? Could be something as simple as something you missed in setting your power management.

Things of note I took when deciding mine:

  • Jump range doesn't need to be long: missions usually are within 20 LY range of the station, so anything larger than that is either over engineering or you could be prioritizing something else (unless your Ody ship fills multiple roles);
  • Small ship because landing pads: sometimes, blocking a landing pad with your ship also has some positives, like preventing a landed NPC from catching a stray shot that you missed, only to fail a mission because that rung the alarms. Sure, this situation is completely preventable with awareness, but it takes one wrong timing, one wrong move, one bad day, for you to insta-fail that mission that would pay 5 Manufactured Instructions;
  • A LOT of the time you're going to spend on the missions (inside the ship) is either in in-system transit, or settlement approach/departure: small ships also have the advantage of being more maneuverable during Supercruise, making your life easier there. The other advantage of small ships is that you can slap an Enhanced Performance Thruster on it, limit its weight, and minimize the other part of the time you spend on ship. Also important: SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED; (side note: I would love a Supercruise Enhanced engineering for the FSD, with minimal or no gain on jump range, increased heat generation, maybe lower weight, and better acceleration and deceleration on supercruise)
  • Defenses, weapons and SRVs can help, but cost you: if you want to ditch them, it's fine (except for basic shields). YOU are the weapon of mass destruction. With a lighter and smaller ship, it makes it easier to relocate when under fire, land fast, dispatch the ship away fast, and get it landed back fast after all life signs are cleared. Also, again: SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED;
  • On Power Distributors, Charge Enhanced and Engine Focused might seem like the same boost-wise, but they are not: Engine Focused is going to give you more boosts before you run out of charge (2 or 3, compared to 1 or 2 with Charge Enhanced). Useful when undersizing the Power Distributor for less weight (and thus, more SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED)
  • You should fly what is fun to you: I like optimization and a word with 5 letters that I wrote a few times here with a few extra letters, so, these were the main points for me. You decide the main points for you. "Being able to bloat the sky of the settlement" is fun to you? THE TYPE-9 HEAVY CAN DO IT.

These points made me gravitate towards 3 options: Imperial Eagle, Viper Mk III and Imperial Courier. I flew A LOT of DeLacy's stuff during my early career, so I ignored it (but copy the Imp Eagle build strategy to it, and you have the same max speed, but less maneuverable). Imperial Courier can be tanky and be reasonably fast, but not max speed fast. Imperial Eagle is love, Imperial Eagle is life, Imperial Eagle is my wife.

These are my two builds, with the Imperial Eagle being exclusive for Ody (and when I'm feeling like just going around a bit slower but with style), and the Imperial Courier being multi-role (on-foot/SRV exploration, mid-range jumper, megaship scanner, battering ram for megaship defenses, ground base scanner & power generator sniper, and ganker frustrator, as they can't outrun you or damage you enough, so you keep "running away & getting interdicted again" and ask them if they're having fun after the 3rd of 4th interdiction while laughing at them).

Make sure you set the power priorities correctly - that is the Srv Hangar and the Cargo hatch on priority 5
That means you cannot use the Cargo hatch with weapons deployed, but everthing else should work correctly assuming you did my build exactly, including the experimentals

Well, SPEE(and many more E's)EED won't help you to deal with the defenses at a tipped military settlement
And while landed, speed is useless - but defenses (shields and hulls) are not. What i mean is having strong defenses will buy you enough time to get out of that building and defend your ship if you get a drop of scavs while you are busy inside.
Not at last, 450+ m/s are more than enough to outrun any NPC - which means usually speed is my least concern in PVE :)

Sure, an iCourier can sport more shields than my DBX, but unfortunately it cant fit a size 4 SRV - and having your SRV destroyed mid mission with no spare can be quite annoying. Also, while missions indeed are usually within 20-25 ly, having 50 ly jump range really helps - relocating or moving to the other side of the bubble if needed.

So almost 2 years later, i still stand to my criteria mentioned on the first page in post #16
