OK, how about if I'm stopping traders getting to Persephone and Summerland by interdicting them and getting them to drop their cargo? Acceptable now it's (mildly) influencing a community goal?
Good luck staying alive.

This has actually worked so far. And I'm not just targeting traders for fun now (that didn't actually work very well!), I'm involved in the community goal. I've got traders to drop at least a couple of thousand tonnes of cargo so far and, once I've explained what I'm doing, every trader has been amicable and in the spirit of the game. I explain to them that if they're carrying genuine food and supplies to refugees then they can keep their cargo and go. If they're carrying any kind of weapons cargo then they must drop it and they can leave freely. Who wants weapons falling into the hands of civilians? OK, I know when I first posted this idea it had mixed to (very) negative responses, but this community goal is a perfect example of how by using your imagination and coming up with ways to disrupt it then you can influence it without having to switch back to your trading ships.
If more commanders stopped ships and got them to drop their cargo, then surely (if the game mechanics work) the price of that cargo would rise and some players who are trading would benefit? By cutting off the supply then surely the prices should rise?
Sorry to all the traders that have had to give up their cargo, but a big thanks to you for being in the spirit of the game, dropping your (illegal, by the way) weapons cargo and being safely on your way.
YES! This is what it's about. Every action will trigger another. If I decide to play one way then, obviously, I'll get my just desserts. Come after me Commander and let's dual. After all, I'll deserve it. I'll keep my bounty high for you...
