Gotta have PS+ to use PG?

It must be about a year ago now that I decided one day I'd like to try playing ED in Open, then found I had to pay extra to do that by paying for the PS4+ service. I think I took out a year's subscription intending to try out all aspects of it.

Recently I got a reminder that my subscription was due to expire, but I was very much in two minds whether to renew it or not, as playing in Open hasn't on the whole meant that much to me, (I didn't in the end get much out of the other aspects of being a PS4+ user.)

Then last week I decided to join and start using the Mobius PG for PS4 when I played ED, and I have really been enjoying that.

Today however, when I try logging into the game on Mobius, I just get redirected to the buy PS4+ screen, and can only play ED in Solo.

I think I know the answer, but can anyone confirm that you have to buy the PS4+ membership not only to play in Open, but also to use a PG?

As I got the point, ps+ is for network features of any game.
For example, I could play doom story mode (single player) without the subscription, but for network multiplayer I needed ps+.
About ED funny thing is that even in solo it is still requires network. To access galaxy servers.

Hi Zoltah, you're correct - PS+ is required for both Private Groups and Open Play, however it isn't required for Solo (even though the game requires a network connection)

Thank you. Er... how is that fair exactly?

(I'm one of those people who only really bought a PS4 to play ED, I actually wish I had now simply upgraded my PC.)

It's Sony's fault. Just be glad Sony allowed Solo play to not require PS+.

FYI, all Free 2 Play games don't require PS+ to play online.

OK thanks everyone, currently turning out my pockets and digging the spare change from under the sofa cushions, lol.

While you need PS+ to see other CMDRs flying their spaceships, you don't need it to join a Squadron and interact with other CMDRs that way. We all share the same background server, so your actions contribute to community goals, faction state, etc. even when playing in Solo.

Didn't know that, thanks OD. Actually though seeing other CMDRs flying their ships is for me one of the joys of the game... unless they're shooting at me of course! I got a big career move coming up at the end of April, after which I may be very pushed for time to play the game unfortunately. Decided to see Sag A and play a part in the CG for Explorer's Anchorage before then, and wanna do it in Mobius. So Sony gets more of my money... :(

If you buy a lot of games through the Playstation store, you can "get your money back" through the discounts that PS+ gets you. Between grabbing PS+ on sale and then grabbing a number of games with huge discounts, my last PS+ paid for itself. I currently don't have it because my bandwidth is rubbish right now, but I hope to fix that this summer.

Considering the monthly free games for PS+ subscribers, I consider it a good deal.

I'm afraid the only game I really enjoy playing is ED. :D
Ah no wait... I really liked The Talos Principle. Didn't need PS+ for that!
