General / Off-Topic Grand Theft Auto 5

Am I the only person who is a bit concerned about them using real gang members? The first few games seemed to be poking fun at the culture, but paying real criminals money for their past behaviour is paying them respect for that behaviour.

im off work for the next few day and thought I would pop down to the local GAME for the midnight launch, there was me thinking that there would be about 10/20 people waiting, more like 300+, so decided to walk away and leave it for another day.

The postie will be bringing my copy sometime tomorrow :)! Judging by the reviews I've seen, both versions perform very well (outrageous really :p!)

I'm probably taking Wednesday off

Wow three hundred in the queue! But we all know its gonna be a big game and does look great, please let us know what gameplay is like(anyone) am intrested but dont want to buy just yet, I dont have enough time at the moment to fit everything in as it is, but hopefully soon.

I am interested to hear feedback of GTA V
AFAIK, it has an online option as well, where you can opt-out of play (so you can wander around, but can't be killed) unless you fire a gun, then you have to opt-out again.

Very concerned. To be fair I only played this game once about 5 years ago and was horrified! I hope it has changed, but unless someone tells me it has, I would never let my children anywhere near this game.

Talk about negative role models! I know other games have violence etc but this is pitched too close to real life, or what is hyped as real life by the wannabe gangsters and the people who want to make money off the back of it. In most games you get to play the good guy, but in this game (unless it has changed massively) you can't progress without slappin your about, poppin a homies ass or breaking the law in some way.

That's got that off my chest, now to take cover from the avalanche

I think of it in two ways :
1) Video games don't make a person a bad person. They don't make you violent, or want to go on a mass killing spree. Either you are that way inclined, or you aren't. It is not the gun that kills someone, it is the person who pulls the trigger. I have played GTA SA a lot. I like it. Yet I have zero desire to go out and run down old grannies. I know the difference between a game and real life. It's fun to do in a game, because no-one in real life gets hurt.

which leads me on to ...

2) It is a form of escapism. GTA series allows you to play out being a gangster, going on a killing spree, stealing cars and everything else you can do. It allows you to engage in role play. In real life, you might be a nerd who could barely rip open a packet of crisps, but in a computer game, you are a badass dude, and no-one messes with you! Sometimes being able to role play like that, is good for you. As long as you understand it is a game, and not something that is acceptable to do for real

How many parents give their sons toy guns to play with? And of those boys with toy guns, I bet all of them run around with their friends going "bang bang - you're dead". Yet, would any of those parents want their little boys to actually get a gun in real life and go around shooting people? I doubt it.

And let's look at Elite and all the other space games we like to play. Being a pirate is an option. In the game, you deliberately attack others with the intention of either killing and stealing their cargo, or just stealing their cargo. That is OK because it's a space sim ... right? How is it any different to the GTA series you are so shocked and horrified by? How is it different to giving your son a toy gun and letting him run around going "bang bang, you're dead"?

GTA series IS A GAME ... IT'S NOT REAL. As long as you treat it as a game, I think it's OK.

Indeed. Reality and Gaming are two different things, even if one pretends to be the other sometimes.
For most games, films, tv shows etc I would agree. But IMHO in this game there is a much smaller disconnect than there usually is between people's everyday lives and the game scenario. This is especially true in the US (don't know about the UK) where a surprising number of people view dramas and action films as if they were factual archive footage (this came as a shock at the time), and I don't just mean background story, but down to the last detail.

Exactly, its an option. In the version of GTA I played there was no other option. I tried to play it without harming anyone and couldn't make any progress.

Right, because of the disconnect, that is to a large degree absent in GTA

As long as you treat it as a game, I think it's OK.
Agreed, but again because of the lack of disconnect, how many people (especially the younger variety) see GTA as a reflection of reality? (however hyped) More than a few I think.

I know GTA is very popular, and I'm also aware that there are probably other games out there for which one could make the same argument. Its just that (in my limited experience) GTA is unique in that, as far as I can see, it has no redeeming features in so far as the role the player is cast into.

I had resisted the temptation to comment on this thread but a previous poster raised a concern about real life losers (gangsters) being paid to promote the game, and that tipped me over the edge.

Apologies to the GTA fanboys, have fun

I have to agree with you Bingo, portraying gangsters in a game is one thing, actually paying them because they are gangsters, is not acceptable. That wouldn't stop me buying GTA V though.

You might be surprised how many of today's celebrities have a shady past that they don't talk about.

What will stop me buying it is Rockstar's history of screwing the PC gamer. While GTA IV played 100% fine on PS3 and XBox, you needed a very high spec PC to play it. Then they did deals with Microsoft for exclusive content even PC gamers can't get.

I might still buy GTA V at some point, but it won't be until I have a PC that's about twice as good as the one I have now (and it's not a bad PC either).

I've never had any problems with the ultraviolence of the previous games. I've often walked down virtual streets with my baseball cap the wrong way round bursting caps into the mules of hoses while Snoopy the Dog plays in the background. I also believe that the general public has the intelligence to differentiate between fiction and reality. A good parody might even make some youngsters think twice about the path they are taking.

My big concern is when the ironic condemnation of such behaviour becomes a celebration instead. If it hasn't crossed the line yet then paying gangsters money for their earlier misdemeanours shows it must be getting close. Like Alien, this niggling doubt isn't going to stop me buying the game. But I'm not rushing out to the gamestore waving my wallet yelling "Take my Money!"

If they are also paying money to the victims of gang violence then I'd suggest they do that more publicly.

well been playing it, its as beautiful and detailed as the Last of us, the game world is huge and incredibly detailed. and having 3 characters to switch between makes for a very different gaming style from previous GTA game.

I love the violence in it, I love the colourful language used in it and I love the hidden depth of it that so many people appear to gloss over when they talk about the moral issues of the game.

its a game and if you have to think about the moral issues of the game then maybe people should look at Elite dangerous with its pirating, slavery/human trafficking and murder.

Mobius, a question ...
What platform are you playing it on? XBox? PS3? PC?
If PC, what specs is your PC? (I'd like to know what specs will play it 100% smoothly and that does not necessarily mean Rockstar's recommended spec)

Wow thats a large playing area! sounds great, agree its a game foremost, as long as you dont take it seriously i dont see a problem, gonna have to maybe get the game quicker then i thought now.

No reason why GTA wont be coming to the PC, but I will say that you are going to need a good PC,

on a side note other things to do in GTA that does not involve crime.
