Hardware & Technical Graphics card not recognised on PC

I bought a bargain PC for less than £100 that I could set up for VR playing. It has an i5-4590 processor and the motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-H87M-DH3 that has 4x USB 3.0 connectors.
It came with no hard drive but had a few knocking around, put a Window 10 one in and seems to work perfectly.

Now the graphics card-I had a working GTX 960 around so put it in. Windows seems to know something is there but will not upload any drivers for it. On the properties it says "this device is not working properly because windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (code 31). The driver trying to start is not the same as the driver for the POSTed display adaptor"

Tried troubleshooting and trying to put a Nvidia driver in manually with no success. I replaced the 960 with a working 7850 card and exactly the same thing happened.

Has anyone got any ideas what is causing this problem and how to fix it? I want to play ED in VR 😕

I’d check the power cables and the slot for bent pins. I had to chuck out an otherwise nice 4440 that some numptie had mangled the only card slot and knock off some SATA connectors in the process :(

What's the story with this hard drive you installed? Was it from another computer or was it empty and you installed windows? Not exactly an ideal situation if it was from another machine and you still had windows on it. More then likely you still have old display drivers in there and windows is confused. Download and run the Display Driver Uninstaller app and then reload the Nvidia driver. Unless there's something really important on that drive I would have reformatted/reloaded windows for a motherboard upgrade (which I just did myself)

And it turns out that was the problem- I updated the Windows and it worked :)
