Graphics settings for PCVR

Okay, so I've upgraded my system, upgraded my rift to a Quest 3 and I'm still seeing "ants" crawling along the rail in the hangar. Is it possible to get rid of it?

I'm running a 12th gen i7, 32GB, a RTX4070 ti Super with 16GB, the headset is cabled into and confirmed USB 3.0. I'm on SteamVR with Oculus Link. Just to test the ant problem, I maxed the resolution and all the shading/render settings I could find. Still no joy. The image is much sharper, but the ants are really annoying. Since connecting the Q3, I haven't gone exploring. The carriers were horrendous with lots of ants all over. Almost unplayable. Since I'm still seeing them on the railing in the hangar, I'm pretty sure the carriers are unchanged. Any tips?

Also... there's a pretty narrow point I have to aim my head when trying to pull up menus/screens. Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity so menus don't keep flashing on and off while I'm reading. Navigation and communication are the worst.

turn the side panels to does nothing
so they only display when called for via keybind or voice control is my advice as headlook sensitivity trigger area is non adj

do ants appear in non vr sounds like something to do with shadows so you might wanna try eliminating via the gfx options

I'm sorry. I thought the crawling "ant" problem was a well-known issue in VR or I would have been more detailed. It's the aliasing problem with edges and thin lines. The railing in the hangar, as viewed from the cockpit, is about 2 pixels in height so highlight on top and the shadows beneath make for nasty aliasing in VR with any head movement. It doesn't do this in legacy. The carriers are pretty bad for it when you get close and try to land. I'll try to take some pictures next time I have the headset on, but here's a video that also has it. 2:25 is kinda what it looks like, but mine is worse. Also, I noticed the steam/smoke emanating from the ceiling in VR rotates when you tip your head. Very strange. I've played with shadow settings. I can make it better, but the shadows are what make it!

"Shimmering effect video."

I second turning the side panels off; I bound a "shift/modifier" button on my throttle to allow me to use the navigation thumbstick on my joystick to open the panels as well as normal navigate, then the shift/modifier closes the panels.

Yeah, the aliasing is terrible in ED, and will apparently never be fixed according to the issue tracker and devs/community managers. You can increase supersampling but that will only slightly improve things in VR in my experience while tanking your framerate. You can also try all the different aliasing settings, although I can only personally see a difference in 3 options; No AA, SMAA and FXAA. FXAA is my personally preferred setting with a Quest 2 as I find it the least visually offensive; smoother HUD lines and text, but the rest of the image still crawls.

Someone did try something with ReShade I believe a year or so ago, and whilst I was grateful someone had tried something, it just blurred the image way too much for me to use it personally. Someone else, a modder has spoken about maybe adding TAA to ED as they have to other games, but I'm honestly not sure they can do it even if they chose to, at least not as "simply" as you would with a different game. From the very little I understand of the rendering pipeline in ED, it doesn't function in the same way as the majority of games which would make it a very difficult prospect indeed.

tl:dr - turn the side panels off, yes aliasing sucks, nothing can be done :)
