Grappling Hooks

Piracy, Arguably one of the most fun professions in Elite Dangerous Core. There's nothing like getting your sights on a nice cargo ship, pulling it out of supercruise, and taking out their thrusters. Though, it's at this point where it can get a little irritating because it's at this point where the target ship starts spinning off in whatever direction it was going last. Currently, the only option here is to move your ship in front of the target and give it a little nudge, which is fine(sometimes). But instead of that, how great would it be to get real close to that target ship and launch a grappling hook into it to keep it close? Obviously, there should be limitations. Such as: range, taking down the target's shields, maybe having to take out their thrusters first, etc..

Depends. Can they reboot or AFMU to bring their thrusters back online while drifting FA Off so you don’t notice and suddenly high wake while you’re still attached, ripping your ship in half, sending you to rebuy land while they make their escape and receive the bounty on you?

If so, then I support this fully.

I was with you all the way up to the part about ripping the ship in half.

It'd be fine for them to just be able to rip the grapple off by using their thrusters, minimal to zero resistance as the grapple is designed only to stop none thrust capable ships.

I like this idea. I enjoyed the depiction of grappling hooks in the Star Trek: Enterprise TV series, and can imagine it in Elite. Perhaps as a utility slot module?

Ooh, now I'm thinking Elite Reaver-type action. Especially if you have a ship with one of the raider kits attached. All we'd need would be a new rare: G-23 Paxilon Hydrocholorate.

I support this idea and have posted it before. A T10 would be a great and terrifying anchor. Swarms of limpets belching out of a big nasty space cow latched on to your belly - awesome.

Attaching a grappling hook and being pulled along by the ship as it speeds away?

You might be thinking piracy or Star Trek or whatever. I'm definitely thinking Marty McFly.

Well I was having a bit of fun more than anything here, but I think the point has been made - there needs to be a way for a snared ship to escape as well.

Please no...

Every time anything is suggested people jump to utility slots! Does no one fly any small or medium ships?! Those slots are full!

If you wanna use a cobra for instance, you ideally want to have manifest scanner, wake scanner (yep, ideally, you want this) and then - oh wait, out of slots...

I mean, you don't NEED either, but they are very, very fine piracy tools, the manifest scanner is almost exclusively useful to pirates (almost) and the wake scanner allows you to persue juicy targets. You could swap that out for a heat sink launcher to run a stealthy build perhaps--- anyway, there are very very very few utility slots on most ships. There are a fair few on the huge beast ships yeah.

I feel like it could actually be a limpet (dont kill me!) as long as - they implement the limpet rack they have spoken about, man that needs doing so much! it's crazy how many of those there are, and literally impossible to do much with the megaships unless you have a very very specific loadout for megaship interactions - and let's face it, it's a lot more fun if you can "come across" a megaship/installing, and then decide to do some stuff, rather than park up, re-outfit your entire ship, for one go.

Wow I went off topic a little I think.

Grappling hook/grapple limpet YES
Utility slot NO NO NO NO
Ability to escape said grapple/limpet YES - And it shouldn't really be any harder than it is right now to escape. Reboot/repair, or AFMU etc, and just run.

The hook/limpet should simply enable the ability to bring ships to a stop, that's it, doesn't need any more functionality.

Alternatively - make knocking out thrusters bring ships to a slow halt on it's own (I'm aware it makes no sense, but neither does a bunch of the flight model anyway, gameplay over realism is required in some cases) - and this would I think, be a very simple (but less cool!) solution.

100% agree yeah. And I was aware you were going on a bit of a fun ride - some might not have been (language differences, nuance, etc) so figured I'd chime in is all.

Same here but for search & Rescue, handing in a Juicy Corvette for 50,000,000 scrap value...
For Online it might be a griefer`s paradise, may the ship with the most frag cannon`s win🤫

It could be fitted to all ships as standard as a teather? I mean we fly space ships it makes sence to have a toe rope/ankor.

Perhaps in the teather slot you could have the option of having a harpoon or a toe rope. The harpoon works as discribed in the OP and the toe rope could be able to pull things with you thrugh hyperspace but could only be attached to stationery things.

The harpoon for stoppong and the teather for toeing but you can only have one.

So this could alow salvage to be toed to the station or even some slavage yard structure to cash in your haul. Toeing could slow you down so if pirates tryed to steal your haul you could relise the teather and run. Could be a whole new avenue of game play.

Eather way i love this idea, i think sandro mentiond some thing about a harpoon for pirates some time ago but never heard what that amounted to since.

I like the idea, maybe instead of making it a limpet or something, put it on a hardpoint slot. The larger class hook the longer it can stand up to stronger thrusters maybe ?

This is Frontier we're talking about here. Cables and Harpoons would have to be sold separately. And for 2 pounds 50, you can buy a cosmetic item to make those cables look like chains, or give them a glowing effect.

Hit the canopy with some human waste, so they can't see. Why use a grappling hook when you can have a poo cannon?

C`mon people. What can't be fixed with a poo cannon?

Think of the animation! Canopy completely covered. It's a classic no-brainer.
