Grey screen in VR

Hi Guys and Girls,

Since moving over to the Vive pro (Lens Mod) from the Rift CV1, i am delighted with the image improvements, they truly are breathtaking with the Lens Mod.

However, occasionally i am experiencing random Grey Screens! These happen for a sec, then revert back to the game. They happen a lot when docked and in the Station menu, but can happen at anytime during the game. Sometimes they don't happen at all for days.

Also i am noticing random images of the Vive loading screen flickering on and off in the background (It's the Grid pattern you see just before the game loads).

Can anyone throw a light on this issue please?

Intel i7 8700k
1080i
32Gb
M.2 drive

ingame settings mostly high SS1.0 HMD 1.0. Vive setting at 160%

Thank you

Hi Groovez, any fixes work arounds for this? have i a faulty headset?

I have tried changing the sensor positions closer to me (Headset), but hat makes no difference.

It's annoying especially when i am in a PvP dual HaHa!

Thanks

Try and stick one base station behind you and one in front - mount them as high as possible and angled towards your seated position.

I find that this is the best setup to avoid this.

Thanks Groovez,
The issue i have with that is directly behind me is the door to my 'Den' which leads off to a bright conservatory, and in order to play in this UK heat that do has to be open otherwise i would sweat my doh dars off, so i am worried about reflections. Sensor placement was not an issue with the Rift CV1 as i just placed them either side of the desk.

I'll try fiddling with the senors (Lighthouses, but i am reading this morning since you informed me it might be loss of tracking, that the newer Lighthouse ver 2 is prone to reflections more than the older ver 1 LH's. Anyone else seeing this?

Again huge thanks for taking the time to help me out (Again :) ) it is as always hugely appreciated

Yes bright light sources combined with reflective surfaces are a huge PITA.

I have my ensuite bathroom directly behind my setup and when the door is shut i have perfect line of sight to the rear base station. All is good.

When the missus goes in for a shower and swings the bloody thing open it causes absolute havoc with the tracking - rear camera gets occluded and front camera gets a face full of the bathroom light and the mirror.

Cue much swearing.

You have a camera pointed at the bathroom while your wife is taking a shower. Erm, does she know? I think there are laws about this. :D

Groovez, mate wondered if you can advise again. Tonights VR has been totally unplayable cause of these grey screens. I have moved the sensors right in front of me, and i still get these flashes to a grey screen. VR is saying 'make sure the headset can see the bases'??? They are right in front of you bloody idiot!!??

If i take the headset of my head and watch the VR mirror image on the screen it is fine....Slowly put my head into the headset and it starts again. Stand up and all is fine???

I am at my wits end trying to figure this out. I have blocked all reflections, put a curtain over the door behind me, Switched off the big screen that sits in front of me, moved the Lighthouses all over the room, high up, low down, each corner, right in front of my headset position. Away from my head it is fine, put it on me bonce and intermittent grey screens.
It's not ED as that is not even running, this is just in the VR Room

To me, the headset is at fault? but then again away from me head it is fine....Standing Up it is fine, sat down and on my head Unusable!

Any suggestions? Uninstall software and re-install?? (How is this done?) Any tips for contacting Vive support should i need to?

Thanks Mate, not sure who to turn to next.

I use Windows Mixed Reality For SteamVr, but this is on the settings menu (the drop down menu on Desktop) under SteamVr so it should apply to you. In Settings, under 'Developer', try checking the box: 'Do Not Fade To Grid When App Hangs'.

See if that helps and report back.

Run your room setup again. Valve has been releasing a load of new SteamVR revisions with the Index dropping so it might have borked your room setup config.

They are coming thick and fast so your issues could be the result of the latest software revisions that are focused on the new hardware and have regressed the legacy implementations.

Also check if your motherboard has had any USB driver revisions lately.

Thanks Mad Life and groovez,
I will try your suggestion this evening, but with what i described, i am convinced i have a wonky headset. The bit that gets me is this only happens when it is on my head?????? If i hold it away from my face it's fine.

Might be my strange Brain Waves pushing out signals that confuse the tracking

I will be contacting Vive Support today and hopefully the horror stories of their support will not be too bad!!

As a last resort give it a shot in a USB 2.0 port.

Possibly.

I had glitches in Elite on my Lenovo Explorer. It turned out that the USB 3 (PCI) wasn't getting sufficient power as I was sharing the SATA power with another peripheral. After connecting the USB port to a separate power cable from the (modular) PSU using a Molex to SATA adapter, the problem ceased. I read from a lot of sources that USB can cause problems, but I have no idea if/how this would apply to the Vive. The glitches weren't the same as the one you describe, so this may not be helpful, but may be worth considering.

Will do Groovez, i will try anything at the moment, as the 'Grey Flashes' are happening about every 2 secs or so, making playing the game impossible!
I read in another thread you sold the Pro and got an HP 'Verb' ? i have read your reports and you seem impressed with this newbie from the HP camp? I also note the issue's of the cables, and that seems to be why you can't buy the 'Verb' at the moment.

In a direct comparison would you say the Verb is better/on parr/worse than the pro with lens mod?

Thanks guys, i am frustrated as hell at the moment, as this has only just started (About 10 days ago), and before that it was Faultless. Nothing has changed except Windows & Vive updates.

The Verb is really the first example of next generation consumer VR we have.

The modded Vive Pro is an awesome Elite HMD because it has zero god rays, superb color saturation and the best blacks.

BUT...once you have used the Verb and seen the HUD text in razor sharp detail with no aliasing its hard to go back to the Pro.

Super high res RGB stripe sub pixel matrix panels have zero screen door and give you insane detail - the lasers, impacts, smoke trails, engine jet bloom and lighting effects in combat especially are amazing. You see just about everything in levels of detail that you simply never realised existed.

There are god rays (albeit very minor but you can definitely see them off axis) and the blacks are LCD which is a bit of a shock at first coming from the class leading OLED panels in the Pro.

Thing is after half an hour you forget about the blacks as your brain tunes into them and the scene has all the impact and beauty you hoped for. The view from Palins base is something else.

Its not perfect, the FOV is about the same as the modded Pro and the sweet spot is not the whole damn field of view like the GearVR aspherics - more like 80%.

But what i have discovered from owning multiple generations of HMDs (DK2, Rift, Rift S, Vive Pro, Pimax 5k+, Reverb) is that resolution is the biggest wow factor of all.

Its why we have been squeezing every last brake horsepower out of our rigs in pursuit of the highest levels of supersampling because it makes the scene look more realistic and ultimately leads to deeper levels of immersion. Having supersampled first generation resolution (around 4 megapixel/2k x 2k per eye is the limit for Elite at 90hz) realised as physical resolution is a game changer.

Of course none of this matters when the bloody thing has cable issues and you have to RMA after 3 days

But i cant wait to get my grubby little mitts on the replacement unit...

do you know when you will get your replacement? That could be an indication of when these will appear back on sale. I might invest in one and offload the Pro. Did you sell your on Fleabay?

Hmmm, worth looking at, Thanks.

Does the Verb need Sensors/Lighthouses etc?

No, its inside out tracking, no sensors.

You get the HMD (with Rift style earphones attached and a 3.5mm jack if you want to use your own), cable, 2 WMR controllers and batteries for them in the box and thats that.

The cable runs a USB 3 and Display Port combo down to the rig from a block connector on the HMD.

It requires installing Windows Mixed Reality Portal (a 2 gig download) and then installing Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR (mere MBs) inside Steam.

Pre-requisite is Windows 10 and a kickass rig (which i believe you already have).
