Distant Worlds II Event Griefers ruined the Distant Worlds 2 preparations

Multiple, multiple threads about official Private groups for the expedition...and still people play in open and whine when the inevitable happens. I'm just over here all:

I was in an official private group, (Fleetcom), about 20 minutes before 8pm and was destroyed. Made it back for the mass jump but made sure I was in a different instance.

I've decided to hold off until tomorrow now so I can go collect all my rares again,

Ho hum.

Not yet, it's on my Xbox Live profile. At first I was in my exploration ship but when I saw them appear I returned home and switched to my combat Corvette. However, when I got back there was not one but a wing of 3 griefers shooting at everything that moved. That is what I made the video of.

The problem with this is that the game should not be about this. Again, there's a fantastic mass event happening that's even in the news and what will be the news tomorrow? Collapsed servers and griefers killing preparing explorers. Blaming those who play in Open and want to be part of something big is typical victim blaming and should not be the topic at all. I don't give a damn since I have way more money to rebuy my ship than these losers will ever have, but they've destroyed one of my friends as well, who was also eagerly awaiting the mass jump. Frontier basically allows players to ruin their events and experiences. It's just low (from the griefers' part I mean) and the thing is, there is nothing in the game to prevent this from happening. At events like this, private groups can always be partial solutions since entering a dedicated PG was not mandatory. If the game doesn't provide any kind of punishment system, then next time PG should be mandatory.

I absolutely LOVE how angry you are about this. You do realise it's just a game, right? A game with TWO whole game modes to avoid player killers. It is absolutely your own fault you were destroyed. Who was the one who decided to go to Open play for an massive event? That would be you, no Player Killer forced you to select that mode.

If you get this legitimately angry and feel the need to insult and make assumptions about the lives of other players, I seriously suggest that you hang up the controller and go seek anger management, this forum isn't that

If you go to the street and someone shoots you dead is it your fault because you knew it could happen any time yet you went out anyway? I wouldn't agree with this. I'm not angry for myself, I'm angry because this is about a community which the developers simply let loose instead of applying some rules. And this has been going on for years. I disagree that this is the victims' fault. Open play is not there to provide griefers a play space (piracy is a completely different matter), it's there so that strangers can meet and play together. I'm sorry if you don't know what the difference is. By the way, as bad a game as it is, Fallout 76 solved the griefer problem quite efficiently. This is as much about new players and many others who are regularly affected by this - events like DW just expose it more to the public and it's sad to see that after all these years the developers don't do anything about it.

And there's the comparisson to real life murder I was waiting for you to make. Get a grip, it's a game. If a player killing you in a GAME causes you actual grief, as the tone and content of your comments imply, then you really really should quit gaming altogether. You are embarassing yourself big time here

Because victim blaming is based on the same principle as in real life. This is my opinion about these players and the design of the game. You have every right to disagree as I do to your advice as well. This phenomenon has always been in the game and it's come up time and time again, even on these forums. I look it from a community perspective as it's part of my real-life job (not related to this game) and I can see how something like this can hamper others' enjoyment. I wrote my two cents, that's all.

You can use your buzzwords all you want, but the fact is there are NO VICTIMS here. First and foremost as others have pointed out - it’s a video game. Secondly no one did anything disallowed. Their behavior, contrary to how you FEEL, is encouraged by the framework of the game. I don’t know if you’ve ever played a game where pvp is allowed and encouraged but there was NO GRIEFING by your own account of events. If someone were to dog you system after system until they killed you, and waited for you to try again and repeated this, THAT might be close to griefing. A coordinated attack on players who leave themselves open to attack is exactly what happens in a pvp game and I hate to break it to you but it’s a PVP game.

Personally, years ago when I started playing Elite and was griefed the first time, it peeved me off quite a bit, but now I wouldn't care either way. I think it mattered more to me when I was new to the game and didn't have enough knowledge or rank, credits, etc, so it hurt a lot more. Now, I got all that I need, so losing a ship won't rock my ship. :)

And even with engineered shield, shield boosters, some weapons, souped up thrusters, etc, for my exploraconda, I know that I will be cut to pieces if I got into a fight, so it's not even worth trying to "git gud". It's not going to make a difference. What makes a difference is: 1) last parked station close by, 2) enough credits to rebuy many times over.

Very well summarized, no points to add

The universe is a hostile place, and humanity is, well humanity. People will attack, people will help,.people will ignore, people with be thankful it isn't them. You are your own best shield, your own best weapon.

The title says it all. A lot of Commanders were preparing for the journey at the DW tourist beacon when, not completely surprisingly, griefers appeared. At first, only an Imperial Curier, then later a whole wing with engineered PvP ships. They of course ruined the occasion for a lot of players. Forum rules prevent us stating names publicly but I have made a video of the incident and a photo of my own ship's destruction. I'm sorry for all the Commanders as this shaped up to be a great day yet it was ruined by a-holes.

And truly, after all these time I played, I wouldn't want it any different. :)

I've embraced the griefers, even if I'm not one myself. It's part of the game and the challenge. (And I really don't think them as "griefers" anymore, but as in-game characters: Reavers)
