Yet you haven't mentioned the BGS or powerplay... With Powerplay I finally see the depth of Elite Dangerous. The rise and fall of factions matters. Where you trade, who you give exploration data to, who you kill... it all matters A LOT. It all ties in together in a complex web that can be 100% manipulated by the players if you know what you're doing. Now that I'm doing power play I'm still playing the same game of getting more money and getting bigger/better ships, but I'm doing it while also serving a larger purpose. Undermining, fortifying, expanding, preparing, participating in wars, running missions for specific factions to increase their influence, and seeking out engineers to tweak my ship to be better at all of those things. On top of all that I'm still working on my fed rank, which is now just sort of happening in the background while I do other stuff.
I have SO much stuff I can do now it's borderline overwhelming. Suddenly I need like 2-3 more specialized ships, and because I love modding I need to unlock engineers for all those ships... GAH! SO MUCH STUFF. None of it feels grindy. I spend an hour of play, get about 10 missions done. I make some money, gain a level of rep with a faction; minor goal complete. Honestly, it's the same for other games. 1 hour of play in an mmo would not even be enough to increase my rep with whatever "group" I was working towards. 10 quests in an hour with an mmo... if I wasn't speed running that sounds about right.
Stop pigeon-holing the game. There's plenty to do and plenty of reasons to do it. People just don't want to for some reason.
