groups revisited

I should say "as far as we know". I got burned by Michael Brookes saying they hadn't announced something (i.e. keeping their options open) when other devs HAD said something... so, clearly, they like to keep their options open! ;)

well, in eve i lost more credits on camps than i earned. after i learned which gates not to visit. but after all i must say without camps , there is missing something. i think the players will in the end after a learning curve or if they really need some stuff delivered or by doing solo missions, and earn some credits, go to the all group as default.

I know as much as any other forumian, however so far groups has been clearly set in stone, at least in fundamental level it is quite clear that players will have possibility to change groups. However most likely default will be open all, thus diminishing worries about people "disappearing" from MP right from the start.

I also strongly disagree with jumping to conclusions that people will be frustrated and will switch to closed group or single player group. We haven't seen combat yet, and I predict that those whose background is EVE or X games will surprised how complex it is. Thus assuming that human pirate versus human trader always first one will be victorious is wrong. In fact I am ready to bet that at the beginning NPC pirates will be more effective. Also people wanting to avoid human player attacks will have to learn how to fight them anyway. As I said previously in this thread, this is not your casual MMO where NPCs are passive aggressive, in this game NPCs will be opportunists, t.i. pirates will attack you en route even if you play single player online. You will have to fight them, otherwise you won't make much trade.

A good goal for the developers to have will be to make the AI all but indistinguishable from players, which, considering the scale of the galaxy is a very likely goal.
Piracy is a point of view, Most players on Eve for instance view piracy as killing anything that moves, regardless of its value, in that respect Eve's community has fast devolved into a griefers playground (which is also encouraged by Devs, the criminal system is also lacking imho) and Eve has less than 10000 star systems connected by a series of gates and extremely poor NPC content (not to mention Eve's 'exploration' which really isn't exploring anything at all).
In contrast Elite, with its vast amount of star systems and lack of gates, I expect you'll find a different mentality and if the AI is solid you'll fast find groups of mercenaries forming offering their services as escorts. To be honest, with the scale of the galaxy planned I feel you could disappear in the game and not see another player for days or even weeks, even with 40000 players logged in all at once how much space do you think they can cover?
I think it also likely that where you may get attacked by large groups of NPC pirates I wouldn't expect anyone to answer your calls of distress unless on the all side of things.

There is also big difference between these two games, and that's fact that pirates in ED will get their rating only and only then when they just steal goods, not kill ships. This combined with the fact you can't just ram ships, you can't kill other ship if player is at least smart enough to run away, etc. etc. EVE is point'n'click, ED will be much more complex in this regard, thus diminishing griefing/troll factor considerably.
