Hardware & Technical GTX 980 $550 - should I wait another month?

I just got a 970 for $350 inc tax. It's quite a bit cheaper and only 8-10% slower than the 980 stock. Can be overclocked to equivalent speed.

I found no need to overclock. Both my games run at 1080p at 60+ fps Vsync.

ED docked runs at about 95fps on the 970 where my old 650 was about 23fps.

So I've had no need for overclocking.

If your running at over 1080p like 4k or something, maybe a 980 is worth it.

I wouldn't get a previous gen 7x card. They run hotter and use an extra 100w of power.

Try adding supersampling.
Nvidia control panel
Change resolution
Customise
Enable resolutions not exposed by display
Create custom resolution
Enter resolution and click test
If it accepts it you'll now be able to select that resolution from the graphics menu of any games.

On my 970 I selected 2560x1440 resolution and it downsamples on the card to 1920x1080. I run elite maxed out with this with smaa. Looks beautiful :)

The "I Need a GTX 980 But Can't Justify the Expense" Support Group

Thanks for this thread. It's given me my plan of action.

I'm waiting for 28th November to see if there are any price drops. If not, I'm buying one then anyway.

If you can afford one, go for it! It's what I'm doing even though the 970 is much better value. I hope to SLI when the Rift/drivers handle it all smoothly and I'd rather have 2 980s than 2 970s, simple as that. :)

I think I may try to hold off a month (until Black Friday) and see if I can get something extra. If ED was dropping tomorrow I would buy it now but since we may see another wipe in the universe I will try to hold off another month. I did say TRY :)
980 here I come

thanks all

Thanks for the tip. It does look MUCH better than native resolution and once set up you can use it in any game without fiddling with drivers. UI gets smaller in some games which can be a plus too.

I'm getting a 970 too, and I've been decided for a month or so, but I'm going to wait till January for the inevitable post-holiday specials. ;)

It wouldn't be much of a support group if we were both here on this thread egging each other on to buy it now :D

Go on, go on, go on, go on.....

I found I could go to higher res but not 4k but I assume that's to do with my monitor. If I ever play some older games this will be fun to play with.

it depends on what you want with it.
if you want Ocullus then yes , else even a GTX760 goes over 60 fps.
but saves you half the cash.
