I just got a 970 for $350 inc tax.It's quite a bit cheaper and only 8-10% slower than the 980 stock. Can be overclocked to equivalent speed.
I found no need to overclock. Both my games run at 1080p at 60+ fps Vsync.
ED docked runs at about 95fps on the 970 where my old 650 was about 23fps.
So I've had no need for overclocking.
If your running at over 1080p like 4k or something, maybe a 980 is worth it.
I wouldn't get a previous gen 7x card. They run hotter and use an extra 100w of power.
Try adding supersampling.
Nvidia control panel
Change resolution
Customise
Enable resolutions not exposed by display
Create custom resolution
Enter resolution and click test
If it accepts it you'll now be able to select that resolution from the graphics menu of any games.
On my 970 I selected 2560x1440 resolution and it downsamples on the card to 1920x1080. I run elite maxed out with this with smaa. Looks beautiful
