[Guide] Ranking up with Fed/Emp - Combat Way.

In preparation to 1.5, a lot of players might want to try out new Federal Corvette or Imperial Cutter. For sure, these ships will require high rank in Federation/Empire, so here is guide to relatively fast rank grind.
I did ranked from Chief Petty Officer to Ensign in 2 days, spending around 2 hours a day.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Combat capable ship. Fast ships preffered, or those, which are hard to mass lock.
  • Some combat skills.

PROCESS:

  • Find a system, where stations/outpost belong to Federation/Empire factions AND there is CIVIL WAR going on. For example, such system (Fed) is BARNARD'S STAR. After you found such system, dock at station or outpost there.
  • Check bulleting board. Take all missions, which require killing civillians/bounty hunters/authority, and which are given by Fed/Emp factions. Refresh bulletin board by going Solo-Open if you run out of missions. Such missions will only involve 3-4 nearby systems, so all your missions targets will be in 3-4 systems nearby. When you have 10-15 missions in transactions, do next step.
  • Start doing missions. Your missions are pretty much all same, so you for sure will have several missions of same type for 1 system. For example, there are 3 missions, which require you to kill civillians at (for example) 61 Cygni. 1st mission asks to kill 6 civillians, 2nd - 12, 3rd - 4. You don't need to kill 22 civillians, you just need to kill 12, and all three missions will be completed. Capiche? :) You can stack same type missions, and you complete all of them by completing mission with most targets to kill. Hope you understand my text :p
  • Civillian targets can be found in NAV beacons, right near star, so you don't need to travel in SC looking for targets. Just drop at Nav beacon, and you have all targets at same place - civillians (that's every ship which is not police/pirate), bounty hunters (these will fire on you by themselves, right after scan) and police (they show up few minutes after you blow up innocent civillian at Nav beacon).

TL;DR You can rank up by doing combat missions, which you can stack, and complete 10-15 by doing 3-4, because killed targets counted to all missions of same type for same system. And you get money for such mission too! Around 3-4 million for 15 missions.

Your method is bang-on..but the timescale is optimistic. I ranked to Lieutenant pre 1.3 (easy mode), clear saved a couple of months ago..now Post Cmdr and I would estimate 6-8 hrs from CPO to Warrant Officer and 8-10 hrs for the subsequent promotion to Ensign using the missions method...it is ofc also likely you were v close to WO when you started, so it is bit disingenuous to claim 4 hrs is enough to rank up twice.
.
NB - Remember to check if the system has RES for pirate missions / USS good for Police or interdict the first one and get him close to popping..wait for reinforcements..I used to wipe them out in my DBS as they came in, like a game of pool - winner stays on..I remember taking out 9 in one instance to complete a mission! However, 'wouldn't recommend using that ship post 1.4

.......and 8-10 hrs for the subsequent promotion to Ensign using the missions method......

Yeah combat missions are like pulling teeth when ranking up - painful and time-consuming. Took me 76 charity missions yesterday to rank up to Ensign from WO, less than 2 hours. Considerably easier and faster, although painfully boring.

Cannot escape the pain in Elite.

Confirms my experience (took me longer cos I didn't do open solo dance).

Probably slower than charity mission spam, but 100x more fun :D

On a side note, what happened to all those "kill combat ships" missions? Haven't seen a single one since 1.4

Yep, but we're not in a hurry, are we? ;)
Made it this way (mostly combat missions only, but all types of missions as well) to Admiral / Count.

You mean kill X pirates for example? Saw and did many of these in 1.4. Earned good credits with kill ~30 pirats for ~1.5 Mil reward.

Let's hope that with 1.5 we will finally be able to see if there is any progress in ranking at all :/

I've been doing missions for my main faction since 1.3.1/2 (the one that "fixed" the ranking with the wrong faction and the to fast ranking) and no rank mission for me since then.

Good to know that at least some players are able to rank up.

Quite sure progress bars are to come with 1.5. Someone posted here a screenshot for a SRV video where one could see these.

Nah I mean the ones where you have to kill enemy ships in conflict zones

Taking me longer to rank. I don't like the idea of killing civilians, authority ships, or fellow bounty hunters, so I only take pirate kills or deserter assassinations. I also don't like the mechanic of pumping the solo/open handle.

Doing it in Barnards Star atm... only thing that worries me is that when i kill civilian ships i seem to lose reputation with federation, this a problem?
