My Cobra Model: Request for Cobra Mk III images/schematics

I am in the process of building a 1/44 scale (assuming a 130 ft span) of the Cobra Mk III from Elite Dangerous. I have already constructed the skeletal structure by silver-soldering brass tubing together. The span from tip to tip is right about 36". Here's a photo of the skeleton as it stands right now:

The model will be built using nearly all metal, mostly aluminum sheet for the hull plates which I will be cutting to match the shapes and panel lines of the in-game model. I plan to install working cargo doors, retractable landing gear, retractable weapons, and led lighting as well as a full interior of any areas visible either through the canopy or the cargo bay.

But I need better source materials than what I have been able to find so far. Particularly images or schematics of the underside and aft of the ship. Any help Frontier or any of the fans can provide will help me to make a more accurate model

Thanks for the help!

Wow, that's dedication to the cause.

I don't have schematics, but I do have a small observation. You have a vertical (support?) strut in the rear centre, which would seem to be directly behind what I think will become some form of docking entrance:

So you may run into issues with your audacious plan of having working hatches etc.

My only other suggestions are to PM a dev who may help. I am sure there will be concept art like this one for the sidewinder:

OR you need to spend a long time watching Dev diaries and sitting in game to work it all out.

Good luck.

Thanks for the comment Yaffle. That support is just temporary until I get the skin on the thing and then I'll cut through that tube to allow for the docking port. Believe it or not that was my plan from the beginning :D

Thanks drew I will! Also I recently started reading your Oolite novel series and am enjoying them. Thanks for making them available to us!

Thanks Geraldine. I'm familiar with the build log you mentioned and like the model he made, very nice. Though I want to do the ED version of the Cobra so I will probably have to wait to do much more until Frontier releases more data on the ship... or I can talk them into letting me see what they have now :p

I would email them and see if they would work with you to devise the specs. Perhaps they'd allow you to 'help' them and approve your endeavors (akin to approving the fiction writers)? Can't hurt to ask!??? :)

Yes, this would a great thing! Hopefully Birthday Boy Mark Boss would be interested in pursuing this with you.

Looking forward to seeing this build progress.

Nice model Gwen. That should look amazing once you get the hull plating on. What do you plan to use for that?

I would love to see someone build a scale model of one. Imagine travelling on the motorway and looking over at a near field, and instead of seeing the Angel of the North you see a full size Cobra Mk. III parked there!

oooooo that has sooo GOT to be done, maybe in a field on the outskirts of Cambridge?

tell you what though, after seeing the frame i was struck by the idea of building a cobra mk3 kite, just imagine how cool it would be seeing one flying overhead!

Great idea Andy, that would be pretty easy to do and should fly halfway decently with a couple of "exhaust" tails on it.

Update on my project

After careful examination of the upper hull images I have of the new cobra mk III I realized that the shape of the hull around the cockpit has changed from being triangular to more of a four sided shape with a curved upper hull. So I made a few changes to the cobra framework to account for this.

Here's a photo:

I then cut my first aluminum hull plate as close as I could to the images I have. It forms the shape of the canopy so I thought it was the best place to start from. Here's a photo of the hull plate on the framework:

Now if I can just get ahold of some better images of the back and bottom...

Obviously you'll need some gimbal cannons or similar to pop out and fire real lasers when finished. It's just the propulsion that might be difficult to replicate, particularly to reflect zero gravity and pseudo Newtonian physics. You've definitely got your work 'cut out' :)

Project update

Here are some photos of My progress on the upper and aft hull...

The screws are temporary during construction. I just wish I could get my hands on some decent images of the bottom of the ship.
