Half-Life: Alyx

1. Better quality, methinks?
2. Your goggles - native resolution as reported by SteamVR
3. I have 1080Ti and are able to run Alyx on High without a problem, I am yet to try ultra.
4. When was the last time you reinstalled your Windows 10? Because you ARE on Windows 10, right? Right? :D
The PC came with Windows 10. I've never re-installed it. Thanks for the answers.

I’m running a 1080 with the game set at High (which it defaulted to on startup) - I’ve had one crash (just as I got to the Northern Star) in the 9 hours I’ve played so far. Also at one point had Alyx’s empty hands look like she’d been in a minor industrial accident, but a reboot cleared that up.

I’ve got an i7 8700 & DDR4 RAM, game on an m2 SSD, Rift S.
It's bloomin' frustrating. Something's clearly up with one or more of: my PC, Oculus, Steam, SteamVR, HLA but I haven't got a clue which or where to look. Been happily running Elite on all Ultra for 5 years (as well as all the big name VR games). Then Alyx comes along, starts out looking great but then I'm getting game crashes and PC lock-ups, losing save game progress, losing resolution settings and now finding myself having to set the resolution to Low just to make any progress at all.

I bet it’s frustrating - I was getting to the mumbled swearing stage in the first half hour as the game and SteamVR both refused to centre my view (turned out I just needed to run the Guardian set up again in Oculus, whoops).

There’s a bug thread on the Steam forums in amongst all the “I hate VR why U do this?” threads that shows quite a few people with good systems having issues after the 1.2 patch. Looks like it might be a game issue, not a your-system issue.

Edit: DoomVFR turned into a stuttering unplayable mess for me after a particular SteamVR update last year, which I finally managed to cure by using the openvr_api.dll that was made for SkyrimVR and others. Wonder if something in Alyx isn’t playing nice with SteamVR?

Was just reading it (assuming it's the same one).

Lots of things to try, the main one seems to be tinkering with page file settings. Will experiment tomorrow.

I’ll see what Nvidia drivers I’m running when I get back on in the morning, I know I’m not on the latest made-for-Alyx ones.

Edit: 442.19

I began having crashes to desktop at one point during my first playthrough, but those appear to be all to do with the physics engine; Happens every time I try to carry stuff around, which is really killing me at the moment, since I got into my head to bring the gnome with me this second time around; Try to carry him, and the game crashes, put him down and turn your back on him for a split second, and he will have disappeared, as will any stuff you may have been hoarding in one container or other (probably having had a physics engine intersection "explosion", against the collider of the bucket, and ended up outside of-, or stuck in- map geometry. :7

Man... Looking at how great the parallax mapping on bullet hole decals look, does nothing to relieve my regret that the walls do not have have it. :/

just FYI

I've just finished the game, and only had 1 crash, very early on - I'm on the latest patch version of Alyx, and am running on the following system

Windows Version 10.0.18362 Build 18362
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz, 4001 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
16GB RAM
GeForce RTX 2060 Super - 16GB RAM
Driver Version 445.75
Playing on 'High' setting
Occulus Rift S

Hope they are working on a follow up - this was excellent.
May have to start playing it again on a harder level, although I do have StormLand and Elite to play as well - spoilt for choices.

Now I've got a lot of time on my hands, it may be time to give ED some more Love again

I’ve just finished it this morning as well - that ending and the bit after the credits, whew!

I had one crash and two bugs in my playthrough - the crash in front of the Northern Star, one bug being a Combine upgrade machine having the second stage hacking game not working (the right-angle tube in a sphere) and the other was in the last level with the doors that slam behind you, I was a bit too slow going through one and got pushed back into the previous room. Spent far too long trying to figure out the “puzzle” of how to escape 😅

I’d love a sequel / DLC as well, though I’m also excited to see what the clever folk come up with once the mod tools are released. I think the first two games remade in Alyx will be a cert.

Only bug I hit was one of the 'zombies' with a crab head suddenly appearing directly in front of me after I shot him once in the very far distance - he just 'teleported' to my place and started attacking me.

A good point to anyone reading this - you must wait for the end credits to finish rolling - it's worth it !

Its taken ages for me to get this going. Its been worth the effort (unlike xrebirth, all together now BOO!) spent waaaaay too long on it today. Spent ages getting used to the standy up/down.....still not sure how I did but it sort of works..excellent.

ps....will have zombie facecrab turkey head nightmares later!

<offtopic rant>
I refuse to boo, because Rebirth is a very decent game now, it has a (sadly sold separate) vr version which I love to fly from time to time using motion controllers and it was fixed around the Teladi Outpost DLC which I think took them half a year. Still better than E.D. :p Why do people boo this game seven years later is beyond my comprehension, and I pre-ordered it! And played on release! :D I had the luck not to encounter any game breaking bugs.

What exactly did take so long to get Alyx going for you?

I still have Rebirth on my drive so will give it another try, don't mind being wrong if I end up playing and enjoying it! I'm not what you'd call a seasoned gamer so often struggle with whats supposed to happen and what to do, I struggled with that combined fabricator puzzle for a couple of days! Then my pc kept dropping off the net which took ages to rectify. Its all running nicely now so its back to Alyx and another go at rebirth.

I did finish Alyx today - the teaser following the end credits...
I called Gabe a very naughty name after that!

If dynamic SS becomes the norm for VR gaming, I think we could all be in for a treat!
Now, of course, want HL2 E3 in VR to appear...

In a way, I'd like the whole story remade, from the first half-life, into VR like Alyx.

Just popping back in here to say that it seems my problems with Half Life Alyx crashing are fixed.

There's a lot of good discussion in that Steam forum thread and a lot of people seem to be finding that overclocking is the problem. Anyway, I didn't think I was overclocked (my PC was built for me by a company called PC Specialist) but, somewhat on a whim, I decided to update my bios ('cos there were a few newer versions, all of which had "stability fix" in their patch notes). Anyway, long story short - updating my bios reset a whole bunch of CPU settings that PC Specialist must have setup when they built the PC. Rather annoyingly I can see from running benchmarks that the performance of my CPU has now gone down a fair bit but ... the good news is that Alyx hasn't crashed at all for several days. I guess, slightly reluctantly, I'll take the performance hit over a stability one.

Good news, now get on and play!
I finished Alyx 2 days ago, now will go back and play it again slowly, it's worth it 👍

Still going and not a single crash. Excessive overclocking on the part of the people who built my PC seems to have been the problem. I did actually go back into the bios subsequently and use the Asus EZ Tuning wizard to switch to "Asus Optimal". This boosted my performance benchmarks back someway between the PC's original speed and the factory defaults while still leaving Alyx 100% reliable. VERY occasionally I used to get PC crashes while playing Elite so I'm kinda hoping those days are gone too.

Anyway, absolutely adoring Half Life: Alyx - it's utterly sensational.

Also, nice piece from roadtovr on how Valve went about the Alyx design process. Very interesting and illustrates one reason why it's as good as it is.

Valve rock!
