Happy Now ?

Now that we have official word that Happiness is used in the expansion rules, does anyone have any detailed experience of how to Increase Happiness ?
(Lets call it the "Crowther Rule" so we know who to blame)

I can see that there is a good (but not perfect) correlation between Happiness and high values on the 2 sliders, so general Trade/Bounties/Missions actions are good levers, but :
What about Exploration Data ?
Are there specific actions that help more than others ?
Are there any actions or states that hinder ?

Do we believe them?
Well, I can PROVE the old "fixed but apparently random" methodology is not working, so its more likely to be true than that !
I have looked at our historical data since FC release, and I cannot so far disprove this new method. Mainly because 93% of our systems are in the "Happy" band so there is no differentiation, but I have to go with the evidence until I can disprove it.

I too dismissed their original assertion that it was based on Happiness, especially as the Squad Page reports a totally bogus "Happiest System". Maybe they were right all along but people never noticed the difference (High Inf does weakly correlate to Elated), maybe it only came in with FC but they never mentioned it
I also appreciate the new bit of info regarding ANY conflict was missing or unclear (I know it looks like it might be a cross-version-misspeak)

I am not declaring the new statement as the "Word of Dav" - But you have to work with what you are given.

There seems to be some correlation between happiness and states, and what you'd "expect" the happiness of those states to be, but not an exact one.

It's inexact enough that I'd suspect "both have the same underlying cause" rather than "states cause happiness"

Hmmmmmmm.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

I always assumed when I saw a state like Infrastructure Failure, that the unhappiness came from that. But maybe it's the other way around >.>

Here's what I get by comparing happiness with state for everywhere in Colonia since June 1 this year. With the exception of "None" there's no guarantee that the faction wasn't also experiencing another state as well
(Noting that there is a Journal bug where happiness values can end up corrupted, and common mismatches even without that between the journal and right panel values, so this is only approximate)

i somehow think to remember, that happiness is bound to more favourable than unfavourable states occorring.

if it is not a crazy amount of work, could you maybe correlated something like that?

boom, investment, civil liberty, public holiday: +1
bust, famine, outbreak, blight, drought, terrorist attack, pirate attack: -1

I'm not sure where to put the conflict states and where to put expansions, but my gut feeling would be:
war/civil war: -1
election: 0
expansion: +1
retreat: -1

with that one could build a pool and see whetehr that correlates to happiness values.

Here's one system, one faction, and the states (Elated=1, Unhappy=4 for the happiness number) - Colonia Cooperative in Ratraii (this would have been the Expansion source system)

(Look at the changes in October for an example of a lot of happiness variance despite similar states)

This is why I suspect that player actions cause both happiness and states by somewhat different mechanisms, with it just being the case that the actions likely to cause Civil Lib or Public Holiday are also likely to be +happiness, and the actions that cause Blight or Lockdown are also likely to be -happiness. But not guaranteed in either case...

Here's one system, one faction, and the states (Elated=1, Unhappy=4 for the happiness number) - Colonia Cooperative in Ratraii (this would have been the Expansion source system)

(Look at the changes in October for an example of a lot of happiness variance despite similar states)

thank you very much!

there is nothing like a theory being shred by a giant data table :D

okay, this looks so "random" - not bound to positive states happening, not even correlating.

This is why I suspect that player actions cause both happiness and states by somewhat different mechanisms
yeah, makes sense. damn!

not even correlating
There's definitely some correlation.

Civil Lib, Investment and Public Holiday all seem to be correlated with higher happiness.
Bust, Blight, Civil Unrest, Lockdown and Famine all seem to be correlated with lower happiness.
The rest all seem pretty close to neutral.

The interesting thing there is that most of the negative eco/sec states are generally the long-running after-effects of another state draining them, rather than directly caused by people doing -eco or -sec actions. So maybe state does have some effect on happiness, even if not an overriding one.

There's definitely some correlation.
yeah ... maybe some ... expansion might lower happiness... hmhmhm.

but look at this from your table:

10-9.->11.9 Happiness decreases, while civil liberty goes live

11.->12.9, Happiness jumps to elated without any new state
12.9.->13.9. Happiness decreases , while states still ongoing.

.. okay, so maybe states go live and effect happiness the next day?
that still wouldn't explain it better.

so, there must be definetly other things in play than favourable and unfavourable states. no straight correlation.

Of course, we also have to bear in mind that the happiness data in-game is perhaps a bit unreliable. At my currently docked station:
  • Local news says the controlling faction is Elated, the other six are Happy
  • Side panel says all seven are Happy
  • My Journal now says all seven are Happy
  • But whoever's Journal fed the census site nearer the start of this tick said the controlling faction is Elated, the other six are Happy
So it's probably perfectly valid to adjust any happiness value which doesn't fit your theory by +/-1

...that, or happiness is updated live and the local news articles are just a little bit behind, which would make it even harder to tell what was going on...

Big Data is good, but being able to see the wood for the trees is what Data Analysts get paid the big bucks for (or at least APPEARING to see the wood for the trees)

I know its 5S (Statistically Small Sample Size Stupid), but looking at our 7 Elated systems :
Ignore 1 of them, we only just conquered it and has NO states, so its an edge case where we have recently done lots of work, but not enough to trigger the slider states.
  • All 6 have Boom or Investment
  • 4 have Civil Liberty
  • 3 have Public Holiday either active or recovering, might be a symptom rather than a cause
  • 2 have Pirate Attack active or recovering, which I would guess is a symptom rather than a cause
  • None have a particularly high Inf (for our region)
  • They are all reasonably high traffic (for our region)
  • None have any other "negative" states active or recovering
That looks like a "push the sliders" correlation. Lets hope the meta-brain can finesse it a little.
Anyone know what Exploration Data does to sliders ?

...that, or happiness is updated live and the local news articles are just a little bit behind, which would make it even harder to tell what was going on...
Happiness does indeed seem almost impossible to track or to be certain about or both.
We had 1 system that (according to Elitebgs) in the space of 48 hours went from Happy to Elated to Happy to Discontent to Elated to Happy.

As a final double check, Station News said one thing, Status Panel said another.

What triggers happiness in Factions? It seems random.

It's based on their active states in their various star systems. Some states increase happiness, others decrease it.

well, it is nice that the community managers have the same opinion as i had, before Ian D. came with his data...

okay.

looks as if hapiness CAN CHANGE during the same tick.

i just got a second journal entry myself of the same system today, both after client restart, both after same todays tick.

faction was happy 18:15, and is now elated 22:30.

which makes tracking hapiness near impossible.

plus - it makes it also clear, that Hapiness can't be determined by positive states going active (as during a tick no state changes).
