Hardware diagnostic sensors

Afternoon all, I was wondering if anyone knew what the Hardware diagnostic sensors are for.

I got them as a mission reward and now they are just sat there taking up space in my cargo hold (only 4 ton but still). I have looked on the web but cannot find any reference to them.

They're needed for level 4 FSD improvements at Farseer... A good one to keep 1/2 of if you can.
