General / Off-Topic Hardware Forum idea

Discussion of sockets and motherboards is a bit premature at this stage - we don't know what will be on the market in 10 months time. Even more premature if the game gets delayed (as is common).

There are a few threads spread out over several forums that talk about hardware. It would make sense to put them all together in one forum. There seem to be quite a few people looking at upgrading/replacing their systems for E: D and I think most of us would appreciate any good advice.
You hit the nail on the head. :). Because there are extreme users and there are users who can only buy what they can afford. So we need have a hardware forum so we can address all sides of the issue.

Then we have
Laptop users
Mac User
Linux User
Then systems that just might need a little upgrade to run, Graphics card and otherwise fine to run the system.

So is it better to have hardware topic pop up every forum or have a Forum that dedicated to hardware. Note. If you buy a good system today. You say it might not play Elite in 10 months? That is so not true. We all know it. Unless you Buy the bottom of the line system with intergraded graphics vs dedicated graphics. I already heard this argument on other extreme computer gamer's. All they are doing is Bragging.

Game manufactures want best of the both worlds.
1 People who want to stress there Extreme systems
2 People who have system that can play the game.

you got the brag factor right, if you build a great system today it's still a great system 12 months later.

when people start saying it's too early to talk sockets and cards they may be right for ED but they speak as if no other games exist or will be played by us lot until that long awaited day in late march/early April next year.

you only need worry about the possibility of new sockets and chips if you plan to go all out and get an absolute monster of a system and to be honest you can do that today just as well as i don't see AMD discontinuing the AM3+ or the 8 core cpu's that fit them any-time soon.

and to get my base unit bragging out of the way:

Antec Dark Fleet DF-85
850W BeQuiet DARK PRO10
Asus Crosshair V Formula AMD 990FX
AMD FX-8150 BE @4ghz
16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 Memory
Asus HD 7950 DirectCU II 3GB GDDR5
2x120GB Corsair Force Series 3 SSD's in RAID 0, Win 7 Ultimate - Primary OS
Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green Quiet SATA 6Gb/s IntelliPower 64Mb Cache
Win 7 HP - Secondary OS
Win 8 Pro - Third OS
HP 2509m widescreen HD monitor

and A VERY VERY good home security system ;)

Depends why you are upgrading / wanting a games machine.

If its to specifically play ED and that's your primary reason it makes sense to wait as later on you get more for your money.

Nice system btw, I prefer Intel / NVidia myself as I have had issues with AMD in the past with drivers.

I have to agree with you. Is Frontier using next year computer & graphics cards that are not even out yet while they are testing different parts of the game before Alpha and Beta testing? I don't think so. I think they are using the current gaming rigs. Some high some medium and some low end systems.

The main issue we have to look at issue with other computer platforms. You know old graphics drivers. A few systems that need to be upgraded or that system you had for 10 years .

I've just this last week upgraded to an 8-Core from my old dual core, i believe a hardware forum is a very good idea, particularly for those who might want to discuss hardware issues they've encountered with various gpu's etc, bragging aside, it goes on in every gaming forum, but the real important thing about hardware is that YOU are happy with YOUR system.

I've a house, family and various other things draining my income, so buy what i can afford, when i can afford it, and don't feel bad at all if someone has a better system. It makes no difference within the 4 walls of the room i am in, my games run in high detail at a high frame rate, that is enough right there for me.

So yeah, i'd be all for a hardware forum, especially when you consider that the original elite was running on a BBC Model B inside 32k of RAM, Spectrum with 48k or a Commodore 64 with 64k, the leap to our current systems with 4... 8 .... 16 gb of ram, dedicated gpu (or 2) with multiple cores and more storage than you could have fit in a server room back in those days.. hardware IS important now, and discussion is usually lively on that topic.

Mine on TV all the time :p. If you watch the Big Bang Theory. Look at the red laptop. Alienware M17x R2 Dual ati 5870 with 8gb ram.

thinking about buying this...

CPU:
Intel Core i7 3930K @ 4.5Ghz
CPU Cooler:
Corsair H100i Extreme Water Cooler
Operating System:
Windows 8 (64-bit)
Motherboard:
Asus Rampage IV Extreme
Memory:
Corsair 16GB Vengeance 2133mhz
Hard Drives:
Samsung 120GB 840 SSD
2TB S-ATAIII 6.0Gb/s
Optical Drive:
22x DVD±RW DL S-ATA
4x Bluray RW
Graphics card:
NVIDIA GeForce Titan
Sound card:
Onboard 7.1 Audio
Case:
Corsair Graphite 600T Silver
PSU:
Corsair 850W HX
Warranty:
3 Year SureCare Warranty

It comes in at £2500 (thinking out getting a higher Watt PSU for another Geforce Titan) and maybe the Samsung MD230X3 23" Multi-display Monitor or a decent 27" (as i will need desk space for my current PC, which will be an alt account... requiring my existing monitor)

I will probably hang back until December and see what I can get for the same money... going to an expensive year along with the Xbox One

Well I redid my first Post. I located all topics from General and Game play and Features that I believe should be on a hardware forum. For Private backers. I will make a topic there soon.

Well I have all the current & old topic tech topics listed on the main post. I will update it as needed.

If I miss any topic please let me know.

would be really useful to be able to post pc's or specs of proposed systems to get a view of how they would cope with ED

Rather than buy a new system (something I am looking at) and find I underspecced
